Hendrick Motorsports announced Tuesday, Nov. 23, that it is shifting some of its crew chiefs to new drivers for the Sprint Cup season next year. Crew chief Lance McGrew will now work with driver Mark Martin, Alan Gustafson will work with driver Jeff Gordon and Steve Letarte will be working with driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick said there are no plans to split up driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. and crew chief Lance McGrew going into the Sprint Cup season next year, according to ESPN.com's David Newton. Earnhardt has not won since 2008, a span of 81 straight races.

Hendrick Motorsports crew chief Lance McGrew, the crew chief for driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., said he plans to stick around with the team for a while, according to ESPN.com's David Newton. "I definitely feel it's working," McGrew said. "Dale deserves a shot to work with somebody for a long period of time and to keep everybody together."

David Newton, of ESPN.com, reports Hendrick Motorsports is worried that the broken axle that caused driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. to finish in 32nd place last weekend is a more widespread problem. Earnhardt's crew chief, Lance McGrew, said driver Jimmie Johnson's axle was about six laps from breaking also. So far, no explanation has been found for the extreme wear.

David Newton, of ESPN.com, reports Hendrick Motorsports crew chief Lance McGrew, the crew chief for driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., thinks Earnhardt will have a good shot to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup in 2010. "Absolutely," McGrew said. "This team is stronger than it's ever been. This building (Mark Martin's No. 5 team shares the building) is stronger than it's ever been."

Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick has named Lance McGrew the full-time crew chief of the No. 88 Chevrolet driven by Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. McGrew took over the role May 28 on an interim basis.

David Newton, of ESPN.com, reports Hendrick Motorsports crew chief Lance McGrew, the crew chief for driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., could remain as the crew chief heading into the 2010 season. Owner Rick Hendrick is leaning toward keeping McGrew as Earnhardt's crew chief for next season. "My philosophy has always been if you can fix something rather than start all over then I'd whole lot rather fix it," Hendrick said.

David Newton, of ESPN.com, reports Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. is clearly upset with crew chief Lance McGrew and is undecided if he will be back as the crew chief in 2010, saying he was at the "end of my rope." "Yeah, I feel like don't have any control, you know," Earnhardt said. "Rick's (Hendrick) put me in a great position, but I haven't made the most of it or for whatever reason we're just not getting it done. I don't know what to do." Earnhardt is not in favor of switching crew chiefs with just six races left in the Cup season. He also said former crew chief Tony Eury Sr. will not want to make a move back to the Sprint Cup Series.

Reid Spencer, of SportingNews.com, reports Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. said he enjoyed racing at Dover International Speedway in his first Sprint Cup race with new crew chief Lance McGrew. "I'm happier," said Earnhardt. "I would like to have run better than 12th. We had the car really good there for most of the race. We got it a little too loose, then got real tight trying to fix it."
