Green Bay Packers restricted free-agent LB Robert Francois' representatives understand that Francois may not receive a tender offer this offseason but know that he wants to re-sign with the Packers even if he is not offered a tender. The team likely will try to sign him to a salary less than the $1.323 million that would come with the tender offer.

Green Bay Packers LB Brad Jones is expected to move into the starting lineup in Week 7 following the season-ending injury to LB D.J. Smith (knee). LB Robert Francois might also be another option, as he was a fill-in starter back in 2010.

RB Alex Green (knee) did not participate in practice but is probable for Week 1. DT B.J. Raji (ankle) fully participated in practice and is probable in Week 1.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed Tuesday, Aug. 28, that TE Tom Crabtree (concussion), OT Andrew Datko (concussion), LB Robert Francois (hamstring) and CB Davon House (shoulder) will be sidelined for the preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 30.

Green Bay Packers LB D.J. Smith will not compete with LB A.J. Hawk because Smith doesn't play the same position as Hawk on defense. Smith serves as the backup to Hawk in the team's 3-4 defense. "You can say it's kind of minor, but it's kind of a big difference," Smith said. "It's still a middle linebacker, but one position (Hawk's) has more responsibility than the other. When it comes to A.J.'s spot, he's the signal caller. He's the guy that runs the show. He's the quarterback of the whole thing. He gets guys lined up, ready to go and makes all the checks when things switch around." LB Desmond Bishop is the "mack" linebacker while Hawk is the "buck" linebacker in this system. LB Robert Francois is likely Hawk's backup in case of injury.
