Bryson will likely need surgery to repair his injury, according to head coach Rod Marinelli, who hinted the club might add a running back this week due to injuries depleting the position.

The Detroit Free Press reports Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Mike Martz had praise for Lions' RB Shawn Bryson after practice Sunday, July 30. He said Bryson had intelligence, versatility and "unusual speed." He said he might use Bryson as a wide receiver like he did with RB Marshall Faulk in St. Louis. "He has those kinds of pass-receiving abilities as a running back," Martz said. "So you have to be careful that you don't do too many things with him when the thing he does do extremely well is run the football."

"We expect a lot from him, but he's not going to have every snap. He's going to share the load a little bit with RBs Artose Pinner and Shawn Bryson," said Lions head coach Steve Mariucci. "That's by design. It's not because he can't handle it, it's because we want to keep all of them fresh and healthy. He'll get the lion's share of it, though." While Mariucci agrees with the theory that some of the best running backs get stronger as the game goes on, he's going to stick with his plan. "He'll get his carries, believe me." Mariucci added the offensive focus will be in establishing an excellent ground game.

Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci would like to add another running back to the Lions' roster through the draft, but the physical status of his current crop of backs may help dictate how early the team looks to draft at the position, reports DetroitLions.com. "We'd like to add to the group, I suppose," Mariucci said. "Then you have Artose Pinner who's running around like crazy right now. He's done a heck of a job in our offseason program, and Shawn Bryson who's much healthier than he was a year ago. The health of our running back group is much better that it was."
