Giants | Coach praises Curtis Painter

Fri, 27 Jun 2014 09:26:15 -0700

New York Giants QB Curtis Painter got praise from quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf for how he has stayed prepared with only limited opportunities. "He doesn't get very many reps," Langsdorf said of Painter. "But fundamentally he's really improved. He's a very accurate thrower and that's his strength. He's gotten more work lately and he's a veteran guy. He knows what that entails and he's done a great job prepping himself. With the limited reps he's gotten, he makes sure he stays sharp."

Giants | Ryan Nassib works as backup

Wed, 28 May 2014 18:33:45 -0700

New York Giants QB Ryan Nassib was working as the primary backup to QB Eli Manning (ankle) during practice Wednesday, May 28, in organized team activities (OTAs). QB Curtis Painter (knee) and QB Josh Freeman also took reps.

Fantasy Tip: Nassib is believed to be on the roster bubble, so he'll need a good showing in offseason workouts, training camp and the preseason to stick. As long as Eli Manning (ankle) is healthy, Nassib won't really sniff the field anyway.

Thu, 01 May 2014 12:51:39 -0700

New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese said he is keeping his options open when it comes to QB Ryan Nassib. "We like Nassib, but he really hasn't had the chance to do a lot for us, and so we're going to take a real good look at him in the spring. We still think he's a really good player. He hasn't had the chance to play yet, but he's going to get a lot of work this spring, and obviously he'll get a lot of work in the preseason. Along with Curtis Painter and Josh Freeman there's competition."

Ravens | Battle at backup quarterback?

Tue, 07 Aug 2012 14:53:51 -0700

Baltimore Ravens QB Curtis Painter is challenging QB Tyrod Taylor for the team's No. 2 quarterback duties during training camp. Taylor is a dual-threat option at quarterback, able to make plays with his legs, while Painter is more of a pocket passer. Painter has had bouts of erratic play and thrown plenty of interceptions. Thus far, Painter has not made a strong case for the team to carry three quarterbacks into the regular season.

"I don't want to make it seem like I'm not welcoming or having open arms to anybody that comes to our organization," Wayne said. "If they open the doors for Kerry Collins to come, then that's fine. I can't do (anything) about that anyways. But I'll be damned if we're going to open the doors for someone else, and just drop our heads on who we already have. The Colts are big on protecting their own, so I'm (going to) help protect our own."

Colts | If Peyton Manning isn't ready, team may look for another QB

Sun, 21 Aug 2011 08:56:20 -0700

All options remain open for the Indianapolis Colts at quarterback, including potentially signing a veteran option to replace QB Peyton Manning (neck) in Week 1 if Manning is not healthy enough to play. "It's always been something where we hope he can be ready, and we still hope. But it's possible he won't," team owner Jim Irsay said.

Manning is still on the active PUP working on his rehabilitation from neck surgery to repair a bulging disk. "I was short-changed a little bit by the lockout and I'm going to need every bit of the next two weeks, and then I can give you more of an update with where I am," Manning said. "I have made progress, but I still have some work to do. When I'm healthy enough, I'll be able to play."

Manning has not suffered any setbacks in his recovery, and team doctors have noted the regeneration of right triceps strength is the key. Plus, nerves come back at different paces. The Colts want to make sure Manning is 100 percent healthy before he returns full speed; they do not want him to return too early and other shoulder or elbow problems develop because of it.

Backup QBs Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky have struggled in the preseason, combining for a passer rating of 34.4. They have generated just one touchdown and two field goals, going 19 of 43 for 273 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions.

If the team were to bring in a veteran quarterback, they would have to scale back the offense and look for him to be more of a game manager.
