Browns | Brian Hoyer's status up in air

Sun, 22 Feb 2015 18:20:02 -0800

Cleveland Browns impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer's agent met with the Browns in January, but it is uncertain when negotiations will relaunch.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns are meeting with draft prospects at the quarterback position, and of course they still have Johnny Manziel on the roster. It seems unlikely Hoyer will be brought back at this point, but that door certainly isnít closed. Whomever is the starter in Cleveland is expected to be without Josh Gordon, and it is unclear if Jordan Cameron will be back. That makes the fantasy outlook of any Browns quarterback unappealing.

Browns | Browns, Brian Hoyer reunion not close

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 11:48:19 -0800

Cleveland Browns impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer is not close to working out a new deal with the team. Hoyer had hoped to have a sit down meeting with the club and general manager Ray Farmer at this point to gauge the team's interest, but a meeting hasn't taken place. The Browns appear to be looking at other options first while allowing Hoyer to do the same.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns are very unsettled at QB yet again entering the offseason. With Johnny Manziel in rehab treatment, it's anyone's guess as to who their starter will be out of training camp. If Hoyer re-signs, he'll be in a competition for the starting job, like he was last year. Hoyer's has virtually no upside as a fantasy QB, though.

Browns | Brian Hoyer talks text message scandal

Tue, 10 Feb 2015 12:27:17 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer said he's intrigued by the text message investigation, especially since it deals with play-calling and the quarterback situation. It is still unknown whether Hoyer will become a free agent this offseason or if he'll be re-signed by the Browns.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has been relatively successful in Cleveland but his time there could be done. We still don't know where Hoyer will be playing in 2015, however, so it's hard to gauge his fantasy value at this point. No matter where he plays, he still won't be every-week starting fantasy quarterback material.

Browns | Brian Hoyer ready for Round 2?

Sat, 07 Feb 2015 18:10:17 -0800

Cleveland Browns impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer said he would be willing to battle QB Johnny Manziel for the starting job a second time if he re-signs with the team. "It's something I've already done once," he said. "I'm not afraid of doing it twice."

Fantasy Tip: Unless the personnel dramatically changes in the offseason, it's unlikely any quarterback in Cleveland will provide much fantasy value in 2015.

Browns | Brian Hoyer up for anything

Sat, 07 Feb 2015 11:32:00 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer said all options are on the table as far as free agency and whether he'll return to Cleveland. Hoyer will become an unrestricted free agent this year, but Hoyer's agent has said that Hoyer could be re-signed and is scheduled to meet with general manager Ray Farmer and offensive coordinator John DeFilippo in the near future.

Fantasy Tip: At this point we don't know if Hoyer will return to the Browns or be on a different roster, so it's difficult to gauge his fantasy value. If he stays with Cleveland, he probably has a better chance of starting as owner Jimmy Haslam has already said he's not sold on Johnny Manziel. Stay tuned to this situation throughout the offseason.

Browns | Browns owner not sold on Johnny Manziel

Fri, 23 Jan 2015 10:09:37 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel had a big proponent last year in owner Jimmy Haslam, but Haslam now thinks the team needs a quarterback in order to get their team turned in the right direction. "We've got to get a quarterback and got to get it fixed," Haslam said. "What I would say to our fans is, we're going to continue to work really hard to find that quarterback who can make us a championship team." Haslam isn't ruling out Manziel being the starting quarterback in 2015, but he's leaving it open for other options, including QBs Brian Hoyer or Connor Shaw.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Manziel didn't have much time to prove himself at the tail end of last season, it apparently was enough to convince the team that they'll have an open competition at the position in training camp this year. Manziel will likely head into fantasy football draft season as a giant risk as a backup QB.

Browns | Brian Hoyer to receive extension?

Thu, 22 Jan 2015 13:46:58 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer could be re-signed this offseason, according to his agent. Hoyer is expected to meet with general manager Ray Farmer and offensive coordinator John DeFilippo in the near future.

Fantasy Tip: It still remains to be seen who will start for the Browns in 2015. Johnny Manziel does have more upside than Hoyer, but neither one is a reliable starting fantasy quarterback at this point.

Browns | Brian Hoyer will make decision on future

Fri, 02 Jan 2015 11:04:38 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will ultimately make the decision on his future, according to general manager Ray Farmer. "If he wants to be back, that leverage is definitely in his court to make that happen," Farmer said. "Assuming that we could agree to that deal, then that opportunity's available. If we can't come to that agreement, then he obviously would not be back. There's a lot of work to be done in that regard."

Browns | Brian Hoyer open to returning

Mon, 29 Dec 2014 14:22:25 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer said he likes the scenario in Cleveland, but he has to be wanted back. Hoyer said he can still coexist with QB Johnny Manziel, adding that once you've played, you don't want to sit on the bench.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has done a good job starting for the Browns, but he's not a viable starting quarterback in fantasy leagues unless he's used to spend bigger at other positions.

Browns | Brian Hoyer not expected to play

Fri, 26 Dec 2014 11:44:04 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (biceps, shoulder) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 26, and is listed as doubtful for Week 17.

Fantasy Tip: Connor Shaw likely will be the team's starting quarterback for Week 17, but owners should not consider him as a starting option.

Browns | Brian Hoyer sits out

Thu, 25 Dec 2014 12:36:26 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (biceps, shoulder) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 25. The Browns did not practice Thursday, so this is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: It does not look like Hoyer will play in Week 17, so Connor Shaw may receive the start. Owners on FantansyScore probably should avoid whichever quarterback starts for the Browns.

Wed, 24 Dec 2014 12:25:01 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (shoulder, bicep) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Dec. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Connor Shaw is in line to start the team's game in Week 17, but he should not be considered for FantasyScore this week.

Browns | Brian Hoyer has biceps injury

Tue, 23 Dec 2014 09:07:37 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (shoulder, biceps) is dealing with a badly bruised bicep, along with his injured shoulder, according to a league source.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns could be forced to start Connor Shaw ($5,555) if Hoyer can't play against the Baltimore Ravens. Neither quarterback should be considered even for a second at FantasyScore this weekend.

Browns | Brian Hoyer is very sore

Mon, 22 Dec 2014 16:42:45 -0800

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (shoulder) has no structural damage to his shoulder, but he is dealing with a significant bruise suffered in the Week 16 game against the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Mike Pettine said Monday, Dec. 22, that Hoyer is "very sore."

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has a chance to re-gain his starting job for the regular season finale, as Johnny Manziel is already ruled out with a hamstring injury. But Connor Shaw is expected to get first-team reps this week and might make his first career NFL start. Hoyer could be available on an emergency basis only. FantasyScore owners would be wise to avoid the entire situation.

Browns | Brian Hoyer nursing shoulder injury

Mon, 22 Dec 2014 11:29:30 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (shoulder) will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis with a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Depending on the severity of the injuries to Hoyer and Johnny Manziel, the Browns may need to pick up a quarterback this week, although Hoyer's injury doesn't sound too serious. Either way, it's advisable to stay away from Cleveland quarterbacks if you have a championship on the line.

Browns | Brian Hoyer unlikely to return

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 15:00:58 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer is unlikely to return to the team next year after being benched for QB Johnny Manziel heading into Week 15. Hoyer is expected to become a free agent, and "there will be a market for him, as there was this offseason for several quarterbacks that seemed to be similar to how he was."

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is pretty much useless for fantasy football owners now that it's Johnny Football's show to end the season. You can drop Hoyer in all standard leagues if you owned him. Manziel ($4,100) is a low-risk, high-reward investment at FantasyScore in his first contest against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Browns | Brian Hoyer expects to start Week 15

Sun, 07 Dec 2014 14:59:51 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer said Sunday, Dec. 7, after the Week 14 game against the Indianapolis Colts that he was not looking over his shoulder Sunday, and he expects to start in Week 15 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer completed just 14 of his 31 pass attempts for 140 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions for a passer rating of 31.7. He might hang onto his job, but FantasyScore should steer far clear of the struggling signal caller.

Browns | Johnny Manziel could start final three games

Wed, 03 Dec 2014 09:23:21 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could start the team's final three games if the team were to lose in Week 14 with QB Brian Hoyer as the starter, according to a source. Manziel was 5-for-8 for 63 yards and a 10-yard touchdown scamper when he relieved Hoyer in Week 13. Hoyer has one touchdown and six interceptions in his last 15 quarters.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel has much more fantasy football upside than Hoyer, but those at FantasyScore will have to wait at least another week before considering Johnny Football. Hoyer ($4,100) isn't a very attractive option for daily lineups against the Indianapolis Colts, especially since there's a chance Manziel could relieve him again if he struggles.

Browns | Brian Hoyer to remain starter

Wed, 03 Dec 2014 08:36:19 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will start instead of QB Johnny Manziel in the team's Week 14 game.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has a nice FantasyScore price of $4,100 this week, but there are probably better options available to you by spending just a bit more at the position.

Browns | Starting QB still uncertain for Browns

Mon, 01 Dec 2014 13:36:30 -0800

Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine said he's not ready to make a decision on QBs Johnny Manziel or Brian Hoyer as the team's starting quarterback going forward.

Fantasy Tip: Manziel would provide more upside with his ability to run and could be worth a start if reasonably priced on FantasyScore. Hoyer is probably worth staying away from at this point, however.

Browns | Browns QB decision coming Wednesday

Mon, 01 Dec 2014 09:50:41 -0800

Cleveland Browns QBs Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer are in the dark as to who will start against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 14, but head coach Mike Pettine said the team will make a decision on this weekend's starter Wednesday, Dec. 3. "The door is definitely open for a change at the quarterback position," Pettine said. "It's not like we're just going to go back to Brian (Hoyer). This has been a cumulative thing where discussions about a change at quarterback have been more and more lively. We'll evaluate both quarterbacks and have a decision soon."

Fantasy Tip: We find it hard to believe that Cleveland will go back to Hoyer at this point, and Manziel offers much more upside for fantasy football purposes. If Manziel starts, he'll be a high-risk, high-reward play at FantasyScore for likely a pretty cheap salary.

Browns | Brian Hoyer benched

Sun, 30 Nov 2014 12:49:33 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer was benched during the team's Week 13 game and was replaced by QB Johnny Manziel.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Hoyer will remain the starter or if Manziel will take over the job. Hoyer has not played well the last several games and is not a great fantasy option moving forward.

Browns | Browns didn't consider benching Brian Hoyer

Tue, 25 Nov 2014 10:36:49 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer was never in danger of being benched in favor of QB Johnny Manziel in the team's Week 12 win over the Atlanta Falcons, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Hoyer threw three interceptions in the game. Pettine praised Hoyer for shaking off his mistakes and leading the team to a game-winning drive.

Fantasy Tip: That's good news for those Hoyer owners out there. However, Hoyer ($4,700) is tough to rely on at FantasyScore because of his low ceiling. He makes for a pretty bad option in Week 13, too, against the Buffalo Bills, who have allowed just 13.70 fantasy points per game to QBs all season.

Browns | Brian Hoyer shaky in win

Sun, 23 Nov 2014 13:27:12 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer completed 23 of his 40 pass attempts for 322 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in the Week 12 win against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: Sure, the interceptions were worrisome, but he recorded his second straight 300-yard game, and third in four outings. He received a huge boost with Josh Gordon back in the mix. The yardage totals should continue, and with Gordon back, a lot of those offensive drives for field goals should turn into touchdowns.

Browns | Brian Hoyer struggles in loss

Sun, 16 Nov 2014 18:36:10 -0800

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer completed 20 of his 50 pass attempts for 330 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 11 game against the Houston Texans. He is the fourth NFL quarterback since 1988 to at throw at least 50 passes with a complete percentage of 40 percent or lower.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer still posted respectable numbers for FantasyScore owners, but he is going to have to tighten up his completion percentage and get back in the win column or fans will be whispering for Johnny Manziel.

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (glute) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Nov. 5, and is probable for Week 10.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a new addition to the injury report today, but he will play in the team's Week 10 game. Hoyer will cost $4,000 in FantasyScore this week, but you can probably find better options by spending just a bit more.

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer has shown a lot of confidence this year, according to offensive lineman Joe Thomas. Thomas also said that Hoyer doesn't get overwhelmed and he doesn't expect that to change this week against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has been a decent fantasy quarterback this year, but the Bengals have only allowed 10 passing touchdowns so far. It might be best to stay away from Hoyer this week.

Browns | Johnny Manziel could play in Week 8

Tue, 21 Oct 2014 11:05:31 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could see some action in Week 8 against the Oakland Raiders, according to head coach Mike Pettine. However, Pettine said Monday, Oct. 20, that QB Brian Hoyer is still firmly entrenched as the team's starting quarterback. Hoyer completed a career-low 39 percent of his attempts against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7 and threw for 215 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He has completed only 41.3 percent of his passes in the last two weeks. Pettine blamed Hoyer's poor performance on the team's inability to run and set up play-action.

Fantasy Tip: The Browns face a great matchup in the Raiders this weekend. It's a perfect chance for Hoyer to bounce back from his previous rough outings, but if he doesn't, there's probably a good chance that Manziel is starting in Week 9.

Browns | Brian Hoyer struggled in Week 7

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 15:03:22 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer completed only 39 percent of his passes in the team's Week 7 game, which is the worst completion percentage by any quarterback this season.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer struggled against the Jacksonville Jaguars but will receive another start this week. He could be a cheap starting option on FantasyScore this upcoming week since he will be facing the Oakland Raiders.

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 13:33:58 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer is still the team's starting quarterback even though he struggled in Week 7, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has put up solid numbers so far this season and probably will continue to keep the job as long as he is productive. Hoyer likely is not a weekly option for owners, but he could be an option this week against the Tennessee Titans. Owners on FantasyScore could consider using Hoyer if they want to spend more money at other positions.

Browns | Jordan Cameron inactive for Week 2

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 08:38:28 -0700

Cleveland Browns TE Jordan Cameron (shoulder) is inactive for the Week 2 game Sunday, Sept. 14. TEs Gary Barnidge and Jim Dray are expected to fill in for him.

Fantasy Tip: Barnidge and Dray don't warrant fantasy consideration. This is a blow to Brian Hoyer, who had limited options to throw to with Cameron healthy. Hoyer will cost you $4,500 (9% of your cap) on FantasyScore this week, but he should be avoided except in deep leagues.

Cleveland Browns TE Jordan Cameron (shoulder) is expected to miss the Week 2 game Sunday, Sept. 14. TEs Gary Barnidge and Jim Dray would fill in for him.

Fantasy Tip: Cameron was a pricey buy at $5,400 (10.8% of your cap) on FantasyScore this week, but you should avoid him altogether. Brian Hoyer's stock would also suffer if Cameron were to miss the game.

Shanahan also reiterated that Manziel is not a wildcat quarterback, and any plays he would run would come from the regular offensive game plan.

The Browns trailed the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-3 at halftime but nearly upset the Steelers thanks to a strong second half. Pittsburgh won 30-27 in overtime.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer will have to throw a lot to keep up with the Saints next week. He's a mid-to-low QB2 option on FantasyScore.

Browns | Johnny Manziel might see some action

Sun, 07 Sep 2014 09:23:49 -0700

Cleveland Browns rookie QB Johnny Manziel could see some action in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but it will come down to a "feel thing" per the coaching staff. Head coach Mike Pettine said Manziel has a package of plays specific for him and Manziel has prepared this week to play. Pettine said Manziel and QB Brian Hoyer will not be alternating series.

Fantasy Tip: Even at $4,500 in FantasyScore, Manziel should not be a consideration when building out your fantasy football team for Week 1. Hoyer, at $5,000 salary, isn't a better option, either. Stay away from this situation until it plays out and gives you plenty of reasons to consider it.

Browns | No quick hook for Brian Hoyer

Wed, 03 Sep 2014 13:11:21 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer won't receive a quick hook in the team's Week 1 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in favor of QB Johnny Manziel, according to head coach Mike Pettine. However, Hoyer understands that he'll need to produce to hold off a quarterback change during the year.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a low-end QB2 in standard leagues. He's a cheap option in daily games for Week 1, but his matchup against a tough division opponent isn't attractive with limited weapons at his disposal.

Browns | Two-quarterback system?

Tue, 26 Aug 2014 18:47:57 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will open the year as the starter, but when asked about installing a package of plays for QB Johnny Manziel, head coach Mike Pettine said that it is tough for a defensive coordinator to prepare for two quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Pettine talked about putting in a package of plays for Manziel after naming Hoyer the Week 1 starter, and his response seems to indicate that he is still planning on doing so. While Manziel won't be able to make a worthwhile fantasy impact with just a handful of plays, the bigger takeaway is that Manziel will likely have a chance to start sooner rather than later. He running ability gives him the potential to pile up fantasy points, making him worth a late-round stash in drafts.

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could play with QB Brian Hoyer in a two-quarterback system later in the season, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Pettine said a package for Manziel is on the table. Pettine said he didn't anticipate a platoon early in the season. Pettine also made it clear that Hoyer is on a week-to-week trial.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a mid-to-low QB2, and it sounds like he must perform extremely well to hold off Manziel. Manziel is a mid-to-low QB2 with upside.

Browns | Brian Hoyer named starter

Wed, 20 Aug 2014 05:42:33 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer has been named the starting quarterback over QB Johnny Manziel. Head coach Mike Pettine wrote the announcement in an e-mail and said Manziel made great strides, but Hoyer had a decided edge.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer is a mid-to-low QB2 in fantasy leagues. Manziel should only be drafted in dynasty leagues. If you're in a deeper single-year league, target him as a low QB2. In most mixed leagues, you can probably score him on waivers during the season if you choose to do so.

Browns | Johnny Manziel could be facing a fine

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 05:49:04 -0700

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could be fined for an obscene gesture he made toward the Washington Redskins' bench in the preseason game Monday, Aug. 18.

Fantasy Tip: It could also have displeased the team enough to name Brian Hoyer the starting quarterback while Manziel matures. Both players struggled in the game, but the team wants to name a starter before the next preseason game.
