49ers | Brian Hoyer impressive in camp

Sun, 06 Aug 2017 11:42:12 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer has looked "very sharp" in training camp so far, according to the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows.

Fantasy Tip: This season is Hoyer's second exposure to head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense, so it should come as no surprise he is transitioning quickly. Based on recent reports, it appears he's building a solid rapport with speedster Marquise Goodwin. Hoyer shouldn't be expected to do much in fantasy this season, but as a quarterback in a Shanahan offense, he cannot be overlooked as a low-end QB2 despite his uninspiring supporting cast.

49ers | Brian Hoyer leading players' camp

Tue, 11 Jul 2017 12:24:31 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is heading what is dubbed "Camp Hoyer" prior to the start of training camp. At least 10 quarterbacks, wide receivers, tight ends and running backs attended workouts Monday, July 10, and Tuesday, July 11.

Fantasy Tip: Leadership shouldn't be a surprise from the veteran quarterback. It's a good sign that he and the offensive players are coming together, though, especially under a new regime. Unfortunately, Hoyer's leadership doesn't translate to fantasy football success. He's a bye-week replacement at best.

49ers | George Kittle standing out

Thu, 15 Jun 2017 18:34:04 -0700

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle received the most first-team reps of any rookie during OTAs and has "really good football awareness," according to quarterback Brian Hoyer.

49ers | Brian Hoyer feels comfortable

Mon, 29 May 2017 14:44:40 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is confident heading into his second stint with head coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan was the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator in 2014 when Hoyer quarterbacked the Browns. Hoyer said his familiarity with Shanahan's offense makes it easier for him to call plays, adding that it comes naturally to him now.

Fantasy Tip: Shanahan's offenses are usually exciting, but there's not a lot to be enticed with regarding San Francisco's offense, including Hoyer. The fact that he is the starter should not persuade people to draft him as a starting fantasy quarterback. At best, he is a bye-week replacement in good matchups.

49ers | C.J. Beathard third on depth chart

Fri, 28 Apr 2017 21:33:24 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is No. 1 on the depth chart, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, followed by QB Matt Barkley and QB C.J. Beathard. "We are bringing C.J. here to develop," Shanahan said.

Fantasy Tip: At best, Hoyer is a low-end QB2 as long as he is the starter in San Francisco. Beathard projects as a career backup.

49ers | Brian Hoyer wants to start

Thu, 16 Mar 2017 20:14:33 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer said he won't be content being a backup quarterback, and he believes he will have a leg up in a quarterback competition because he is familiar with head coach Kyle Shanahan's system.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, Hoyer has to be considered the frontrunner to start for the 49ers next year, but he shouldn't be viewed as more than a low-end QB2.

49ers | No QB for San Francisco at No. 2?

Sun, 12 Mar 2017 17:55:14 -0700

The San Francisco 49ers are likely looking at positions other than quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft after signing QB Brian Hoyer and QB Matt Barkley, according to Bucky Brooks of NFL.com.

Fantasy Tip: If the 49ers do pass on one of the top quarterback prospects, it will likely mean Hoyer opens the year as the starter, but he would only be a low-end QB2 candidate.

49ers | San Francisco still in QB market

Sat, 11 Mar 2017 08:20:16 -0800

The San Francisco 49ers will continue to look for quarterbacks this offseason despite signing Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley in free agency, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, who added he doesn't know whether the team will address the position in the free agency or the draft.

Fantasy Tip: This news hardly qualifies as a surprise, as neither Hoyer nor Barkley were signed to be the long-term answer. It does reduce the need for the 49ers to use the second pick of the draft next month to take a quarterback, although it certainly doesn't take them out of the market. Given the lack of a blue-chip passer in the draft, however, it appears the most likely scenario at the moment involves starting Hoyer in 2017 and hoping Kirk Cousins will sign with San Francisco next offseason.

49ers | Brian Hoyer to join 49ers

Wed, 08 Mar 2017 12:04:28 -0800

Chicago Bears impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers Wednesday, March 8, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Hoyer has a good chance to be the starting quarterback in 2017 depending on what other quarterbacks are added to the roster. He has had some success as a starting quarterback during his career but should only be considered a low-end No. 2 quarterback in deeper fantasy leagues.
