San Francisco 49ers RB Glen Coffee announced he was moving on from football Friday, Aug. 13, reports CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco. "This has been a tough decision for me to make, but at this time in my life I feel it is best for me that I move on from football," Coffee said in a statement released through the 49ers. "I appreciate what the 49ers, my teammates and coaches have done for me, and I wish them a blessed season and all the best in the future." Coffee was competing for the backup job behind RB Frank Gore. He added 17 pounds while remaining in the Bay Area for the entire offseason to prepare for this season.

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye indicated that RB Anthony Dixon has an uphill battle to try to take over the No. 2 running back job from RB Glen Coffee, reports CSNBayArea.com's Matt Maiocco. "He's got a big hill to climb," Raye said. "The No. 2 guy here (Coffee) isn't too shabby. So if he steps up to that point where he is knocking that guy out, then we will really be pleased."
