Lions | Matthew Stafford wants help at wide receiver

Fri, 19 Apr 2013 12:56:28 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford would like help at wide receiver, preferably a wide receiver that can stretch the field opposite of WR Calvin Johnson. "I think with what we have on the roster right now, I would say somebody that can stretch the field," Stafford said this week when asked about what kind of receiver he'd like to see if the Lions did indeed add one via the draft. "In the NFL, more and more today, everyone is looking for that. It doesn't matter if you're playing opposite Calvin Johnson or not, you want somebody that can run. This is a game about speed."

Lions | Matthew Stafford working hard

Sun, 14 Apr 2013 18:03:33 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will be at the team's facility Monday, April 15, for the start of the offseason program, and he has been at the facility almost every other day since the end of the 2012 regular season.

It is a departure from his first few years in the league when he spent large chunks of time doing rehab in Florida, or in his native Texas or adoptive Georgia doing offseason training. "There is not a guy that's done more for this franchise in this offseason than Matthew Stafford," team president Tom Lewand said. "The guy's been in the building every day. He's been living here the entire offseason. He's been working out, he's helped us recruit free agents, he's been involved on a daily basis in trying to get ready for the season, and he would do anything to help us be successful."

Lions | Want Matthew Stafford around long-term

Sat, 16 Feb 2013 05:13:37 -0800

Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand would like to sign QB Matthew Stafford to an extension in order to keep him around for the long run, not just because he is entering the fifth year of his rookie deal with a $20.8 million cap number. "Matthew Stafford is our quarterback, and we hope is our quarterback for a long time," Lewand said. "The reason to explore a contract extension with Matthew is to fulfill that goal of having him be our quarterback for a long time. It's not a short-term look at the salary cap. That's the wrong way to look at that. When you look at extending somebody like Matthew, he's not going to take less money to extend. That's a very short-term focus to look at."

Lions | Will look to add another weapon to the passing game

Thu, 03 Jan 2013 09:55:11 -0800

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he will look to add a playmaker in the passing game this offseason. Mayhew has taken one wide receiver in each of his four NFL Drafts as Lions general manager. "The way I look at it, when you've got a quarterback like Matthew Stafford, you want to keep giving him weapons, and that's what we're going to try to keep doing," Mayhew said. "If it's receiver, if it's a tight end, if it's a running back that can catch passes out of the backfield, all those things help Matthew to be better, and they help Calvin to be better."

Chicago Bears SS Major Wright said Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford folds under pressure. "You've got Matthew Stafford," Wright said. "He's definitely having an OK season. He can make any throw on that field, so you have to be aware of putting pressure on him because you put a little pressure on him, he kind of folds. You put a little pressure on him, you close the pocket on him, he hesitates. He doesn't make that perfect throw."

Wed, 19 Dec 2012 06:47:12 -0800

"I really don't feel like it's too much different, to tell you the truth" Stafford said. "I'm just trying to make the plays that are there ... I feel like I probably threw two balls sidearm (in Week 15) and I think both of them were complete. If that's a problem, then I don't really know what to tell you."

Mon, 17 Dec 2012 13:31:44 -0800

Lions | Confident in Matthew Stafford

Fri, 14 Dec 2012 14:37:27 -0800

The Detroit Lions are very confident in the future of QB Matthew Stafford after he has taken a slight step backwards in his second full season as their starting quarterback. "I don't know where Peyton (Manning) was after four years exactly, but I think Matt's definitely on track to be one of the best quarterbacks ever to play this position," offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said. Stafford is approaching his second straight 5,000 yard passing season. He would be only the second QB in history to reach that mark twice (New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is the other). Linehan believes Stafford's drop in production has had to do with the team's struggles at wideout this year. Detroit receivers also lead the league in dropped passes with 37.

Lions | Matthew Stafford says he's healthy

Tue, 11 Dec 2012 10:59:58 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he's completely healthy in response to critics saying that his throwing mechanics are off this season. "I'm not hurt. You can write that down. I can promise you that it has nothing to do with that," Stafford said. "I'm just playing the game the way it comes naturally to me, trying to complete every pass, put it in a good spot for guys, whether it has to be over a guy, under a guy, whatever it is." Stafford has been criticized for having a sidearm throwing motion. Head coach Jim Schwartz has Stafford's back, saying his QB's mechanics "are outstanding."

Lions | Kris Durham targeted nine times in Week 14

Mon, 10 Dec 2012 01:34:51 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Kris Durham was targeted nine times during the team's Week 14 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He caught four passes for 54 yards during the game, including a great diving grab in the second quarter. Durham and QB Matthew Stafford have history, as the two roomed together at the University of Georgia. Durham has been living with Stafford since signing with the Lions earlier this fall. During the team's Week 14 game, Stafford was expecting Durham to run a different route than he did which led to an interception. The two simply weren't on the same page, which they both accepted blame for.

Lions | Matthew Stafford to be hindered by weather?

Fri, 07 Dec 2012 18:17:44 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford faces the Green Bay Packers in Lambeau Field in Week 14, and the weather forecast calls for the possibility of multiple inches of snow blanketing the field before or during the team's Sunday night game.

Fantasy Tip: A snow game is fun to watch, but is bad news for fantasy owners of Stafford, WR Calvin Johnson and TE Brandon Pettigrew, among others. The Lions face a favorable matchup against a shaky Packers pass defense, but if the field is wet, slushy or snowy, a slower track might mean a more ground-based attack. Stay tuned.

Lions | Have no issue with Matthew Stafford's mechanics

Thu, 29 Nov 2012 07:04:54 -0800

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz believes there are no issues with QB Matthew Stafford despite his accuracy issues earlier in the season. "His mechanics are outstanding," Schwartz said. "I mean, when he drops back and throws it, he can do it about any way that you want." Stafford added, "I feel pretty good about (my mechanics). I'm not a robotic-type quarterback. I play off feel. I don't try to do anything. It just happens the way it happens, whether that's throwing it overhand, underhand, sidearm, left-handed. I go out there and play and try to put the ball in a good spot." Balance has been an issue offensively and the inability to threaten opponents with the run affects their playaction passing game and limits what they can do formationally to throw off a defense.

Thu, 25 Oct 2012 14:53:50 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford, who has thrown only five touchdowns this season, said opponents are clamping down on WR Calvin Johnson in the red zone and making it hard for him to get open. "A lot of teams are doing a good job keeping him out of the end zone," Stafford said. "We get inside the 10 and they clamp down and send the safeties. But he's had a lot of catches. Teams are trying to take him away and he's still having a good season." Stafford also said teams are blitzing less in hopes of having better coverage in the secondary on Johnson.

Sat, 20 Oct 2012 09:25:25 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson is not concerned over his lack of touchdown production so far this season. Johnson had nine touchdowns through the first five games of 2011. He has one in 2012. "Nah, not really," Johnson said. "If I was dropping a bunch of touchdown passes, yeah. The coverage can dictate a lot of things. It'll come. As long as we're able to help out moving the ball down the field, that's all that matters right now." QB Matthew Stafford said he and Johnson are getting closer to connecting and he will continue to look for him in the passing game.

Lions | Not facing man coverage

Thu, 04 Oct 2012 05:27:17 -0700

Of the 296 offensive plays the Detroit Lions have run through four games, only five have been against man coverage, according to offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. Opponents want to attack the Lions offense by playing their safeties deep and play zone coverage in front of them. "We're going to have to have the ability to execute multiple-play, double-digit drives and score touchdowns," Linehan said. Through the first four games last season, the Lions had 21 plays of 20-plus yards and seven plays of 30 or more yards. Through the first four games this season they have 17 plays of 20-plus yards but only three of the 30-yard variety. QB Matthew Stafford has just three touchdown passes through the first four games. He had 11 through the first four games last season.
