Lions | Matthew Stafford hits 4,000 yards

Sun, 21 Dec 2014 14:02:47 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 22 of 39 passes for 243 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 16 game against the Chicago Bears. He hit the 4,000-yard mark for the fourth consecutive season.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford's production has really dipped over the past two games, posting a total of 396 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, while his completion percentage is 60.7 or worse. He'll face the Green Bay Packers in Week 17 in a key NFC North battle for the division title. In Week 3 he completed 22 of 34 passes for 246 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions at home against the Packers.

Lions | Matthew Stafford peaking

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 14:50:58 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has completed 75.9 percent of his passes, thrown for 701 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions in the last two weeks against the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "I feel good. I feel confident in what we're doing and I think the guys in the locker room and on offense definitely feel confident in what our game plan is each week," Stafford said. "We're doing a great job of going out there and trying to execute. Guys are catching the ball, which is always great."

Fantasy Tip: It's not a surprise given the teams the Lions have faced in the past two weeks. The Vikings should pose a tougher test for Stafford, but they've allowed an average of 18.30 fantasy points to QBs in the last four weeks. Choosing Stafford ($7,400) as your FantasyScore quarterback in Week 15 is a good call.

Lions | Detroit not dropping passes

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 14:40:26 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has completed three percent more of his passes this year than last year, and the team's reduction in dropped passes is likely the key. Last year, the Lions dropped 8.1 percent of passes. No Lions player has more than three drops on the year, with RB Joique Bell, TE Eric Ebron and WR Calvin Johnson with three drops each.

Lions | Up-tempo offense helps Detroit

Fri, 28 Nov 2014 10:31:12 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford and the offense operated at quicker pace in their Week 13 win over the Chicago Bears Thursday, Nov. 27, and they were able 474 yards of total offense. Stafford went 34-for-45 for 390 yards and two touchdowns, and he appeared much more comfortable in the offense. His 75.6 completion percentage was the fourth best of his career. Stafford was also at his best against the blitz, completing a career-high 14 passes for a career-high 200 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford had a great matchup against the Bears, and he could have the momentum he needs to finish out the year strong, especially since he'll be facing some more weak secondaries in the weeks to come.

Lions | Detroit's offense inconsistent

Tue, 25 Nov 2014 10:10:31 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford had the worst completion percentage in his career in Week 12 against the New England Patriots at 39.1 percent), and the Lions haven't rushed for a touchdown since Week 7 against the New Orleans Saints. They are tied for 21st in the league with six rushing TDs all year. The Lions have been held without an offensive touchdown in the last two weeks for the first time since 2000. Detroit is fifth in the league in time of possession (32:11), 10th in passing yards per game (257.73) and 12th in yard margin per game (plus-29), but they are outside the top 15 in all other major offensive categories.

Fantasy Tip: It can't get much worse for Stafford and the Lions. Luckily, they face a Chicago Bears squad that has been generous to opposing QBs for much of the season. Stafford ($6,800) is a good sleeper option to break out in Week 13.

Lions | Matthew Stafford struggling on deep ball

Fri, 21 Nov 2014 15:21:44 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford, who is currently on pace to finish with the fewest passing yards in a single season for his career, has struggled on deep-ball connections, especially in the last two weeks with WR Calvin Johnson returning. Stafford has completed only 14 percent of his passes at least 20 yards downfield to Johnson the last two weeks, and he's thrown an interception on deep targets in each of the pair's four full games together. Stafford is also struggling in the face of pressure this year, with his completion percentage under pressure dropping from 42 percent last year to 34 percent in 2014, his lowest since 2010.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford and Johnson haven't been able to connect like years past, and Johnson's nagging ankle injury is likely the biggest culprit. With a smaller playbook against the New England Patriots this weekend, this could be the week that Stafford starts to turn things around, though; New England has allowed 21.33 fantasy points per game to QBs in the last four weeks.

Lions | Matthew Stafford breaks record

Mon, 17 Nov 2014 09:47:09 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford passes 20,000 career passing yards in Week 11, to become the faster quarterback in NFL history to reach that mark. Sunday's game was just Stafford's 71st career game. Dan Marino previously held the mark in 74 games.

Fantasy Tip: The record is great, but Stafford was just 18-for-30 for 183 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in the loss to the Arizona Cardinals. It doesn't get any easier next week as Detroit faces the New England Patriots.

Lions | Matthew Stafford has become more patient

Wed, 05 Nov 2014 13:02:53 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he's more comfortable than ever with his secondary options after playing a big chunk of this season without WR Calvin Johnson (ankle). "The more experience and the better everybody else plays, the less you feel like you have to get 81 the ball, but it's still conducive to playing good offense to get the best receiver on the planet the ball as much as you can," Stafford said. The Lions have also been without RBs Reggie Bush, Theo Riddick and Joique Bell and TEs Brandon Pettigrew, Eric Ebron and Joseph Fauria and OT LaAdrian Waddle. The result is a more patient Stafford. Johnson's return in Week 10 should allow for more of the secondary options like WR Golden Tate to see single coverage.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford ($7,500) has had a tough go of it without Johnson, even with Tate putting up excellent numbers in Megatron's absence. However, temper your expectations this weekend against a stout Miami Dolphins defense. Plus, Johnson may be eased back in.

Lions | Matthew Stafford provides late heroics

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 16:32:08 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 27 of 40 pass attempts for 299 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 7 game against the New Orleans Saints. Both touchdown strikes came in the final 3:38 of the game, after the Lions had trailed 23-10.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford went under 200 yards passing last week without Calvin Johnson on the field, but he had a strong game against the leaky New Orleans pass defense. He remains a fantasy stud with or without Megatron when facing a poor pass defense.

Lions | Matthew Stafford under 200 yards

Mon, 13 Oct 2014 10:41:09 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford was 19-for-33 for a season-low 185 yards in the team's Week 6 win without WR Calvin Johnson (ankle), and it's only the seventh time in Stafford's career that he's thrown for under 200 yards in a game, with the last coming in December of last year in a blizzard.

Fantasy Tip: This trend could continue if Johnson is forced to miss the next two games before the team's Week 9 bye. Temper your expectations, although the New Orleans Saints this weekend should go easy on Stafford.

Lions | Matthew Stafford to face rival

Fri, 10 Oct 2014 21:39:18 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will meet the Minnesota Vikings in Week 6, and it will be his ninth career start against the Vikings. He has thrown for 319 or more yards in three of his past four starts against Minnesota, and four of the past six. He also has two or more touchdown passes in four of the past six games against the NFC North rivals.

Fantasy Tip: The Vikings rank 11th in the NFL against the pass, allowing just 225.6 yards per game, so he is a risky play at $7800 (or 15.6 percent of the cap). Plus, Stafford might be without his biggest weapon, WR Calvin Johnson.

Lions | Matthew Stafford eating turf often

Mon, 06 Oct 2014 08:26:46 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has been sacked 17 times in five games this season. He was sacked 23 times in 16 games in 2013.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford needs to avoid some of these hits to remain effective for the long haul. He has a decent matchup against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 6 and is a mid-rate option on FantasyScore.

Lions | More time for Matthew Stafford?

Sat, 04 Oct 2014 19:46:42 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will have OT LaAdrian Waddle (calf) back in Week 5, and with Waddle healthy in Week 1, Stafford was sacked once and hit once. In three games without Waddle at right tackle, he was sacked 10 times and hit 23 times, and head coach Jim Caldwell said a majority of the sacks were a result of a breakdown at right tackle.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford's lone 300-yard game this year came with a healthy Waddle in Week 1, and his return should solidify the right side of the line. A little extra time in the pocket could lead to a big performance for Stafford in Week 5 against a Buffalo defense ranked 25th against the pass. He will take up 17% of the cap ($8,500) at FantasyScore and could be worth a look given the favorable matchup.

Lions | Matthew Stafford receives treatment

Sun, 28 Sep 2014 14:10:41 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (hand, leg) had the back of his throwing hand or wrist bandaged by the training staff after the Week 4 game against the New York Jets, and the training staff also appeared to be looking at his left leg in the locker room.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford made it through the entire game, finishing with 293 passing yards and two touchdowns while also running for another score. That was an impressive stat line considering he was playing with his favorite target, Calvin Johnson, very limited due to an ankle injury.

Lions | Matthew Stafford not forcing it to Megatron

Fri, 19 Sep 2014 09:26:19 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford hasn't been forcing the ball to WR Calvin Johnson, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Caldwell said the fact that Stafford has targeted Johnson 24 times, way more than any other receiver on the team, just shows that the team wants to get the ball to their best weapons as often as possible. "I think if it hadn't been for the interception (Stafford threw Sunday), nobody would even say a word about whether or not they think that he's forcing the ball to Calvin," Caldwell continued. "And that was on a deep post pattern, and really he had exactly what we were looking for, you can see Calvin starting to run by both guys, and (Matthew) just had to get it out there a little bit more. That was the only issue."

Fantasy Tip: Johnson owners won't mind the fact that he's the most targeted receiver on the team, as expected. Johnson is the highest-priced receiver at FantasyScore this week at $8,800, but he has a great matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

Lions | Matthew Stafford shows improved footwork

Tue, 09 Sep 2014 09:41:18 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford showed improved footwork in his ability to climb the pocket when he was pressured in Week 1 against the New York Giants Monday, Sept. 8, his first start in the Jim Caldwell era. Sloppy footwork has been part of Stafford's problems in the past. He also seemed to make a conscious effort not to force passes to receivers that weren't open. Stafford finished the victory going 22-for-32 for 346 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a rushing touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: It was refreshing to see a more comfortable Stafford in this new offense. We knew he was capable of putting up big numbers in Detroit, but if he takes the next step, he could be the most valuable fantasy passer in 2014. He's a must-start every week in standard leagues. He faces a much tougher task in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers, but he still may be worth the $8,000 price (16.0% of cap) at FantasyScore.

Lions | Matthew Stafford working hard

Mon, 14 Jul 2014 07:38:54 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford impressed backup QB Dan Orlovsky with his work ethic this offseason in learning the new offense. Stafford spent his own time going over the offense with the new staff this offseason. "There was so much uncertainty, just trying to figure out how we'd run this offense," Stafford said. "I just wanted to make sure that once we started playing and practicing, I was as well equipped and well prepared as I could be."

Fantasy Tip: It appears Stafford gets it. While this may not translate into much as far as his production goes, the fact that he isn't resting on his laurels bodes well for his progression into his prime years. Stafford remains a solid fantasy QB1.

Lions | Matthew Stafford will have more control of the offense

Thu, 12 Jun 2014 19:18:17 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will be given more freedom to adjust plays before the snap this season, and he is looking forward to the opportunity. "It obviously kinds of gives you the chalk last," Stafford said. "And that's what you're looking for when you play quarterback."

Fantasy Tip: The Lions have plenty of weapons on offense so giving Stafford the ability to change plays at the line should allow him to exploit some favorable matchups as they arise. While Stafford will have to show he can make the proper decisions, the idea of him having more control of a new high-powered passing attack should get the attention of fantasy owners. He has a good chance to be a midrange QB1 this season.

Lions | Matthew Stafford a perfect fit in new offense

Tue, 10 Jun 2014 19:25:23 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is a perfect fit for the team's new offense and is in line to have a big year, according to RB Reggie Bush. The Lions brought in offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi this year to run a high-powered attack similar to the version used by the New Orleans Saints, and Bush is familiar with Lombardi and the offense from his time with the Saints.

Fantasy Tip: While Stafford may not become Drew Brees overnight simply because of a similar offensive attack, Detroit certainly has surrounded him with the weapons he needs to have the big season that Bush mentioned. After struggling down the stretch last season, Stafford could be in for a rebound year.

Lions | Matthew Stafford working on his progressions

Wed, 28 May 2014 13:27:29 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has been working a lot with quarterbacks coach Jim Bob Cooter on his footwork. There has been an emphasis on his footwork to improve the timing of his progressions.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford will lead a pass-happy offense with multiple high-end options. He will be an elite fantasy option if he can get in sync with his receivers. Stafford's timing has been an issue in the past, and timing is critical in the Lions' new offense.

Lions | Eric Ebron selected 10th overall

Thu, 08 May 2014 18:12:03 -0700

The Detroit Lions selected North Carolina TE Eric Ebron with the 10th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Tip: As if the Lions needed another offensive weapon.... He'll often line up as a wideout and, despite the presence of Brandon Pettigrew and Joseph Fauria, Ebron has starter potential in fantasy leagues. He may be overdrafted, though, especially if Detroit doesn't clear target space for him at the position before the season starts. Matthew Stafford remains a top-10 fake-football QB.

Lions | Former coach does not blame Matthew Stafford

Tue, 11 Feb 2014 11:31:37 -0800

Former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz does not blame QB Matthew Stafford for how the team finished the 2013 season. "Yeah, you know, we were 2-6 over the last half of last season, and when you're 2-6 nobody is feeling good about their performance, whether you're the head coach, the quarterback or a defensive lineman," Schwartz said. "But it's a team game and I wouldn't pin it on Matt Stafford. Matt's an outstanding quarterback. He led us to the playoffs. Just about every record in the Lions offense, total offense and passing offense was set by Matt Stafford in the last three years. He's going to lead that team to many great things in the future. Everybody has some rough spots here and there, and it's up to the rest of the team to pick you up,''

Lions | New coach will work on Matthew Stafford's footwork

Mon, 20 Jan 2014 12:16:08 -0800

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell said the team will work on improving QB Matthew Stafford's footwork because he believes Stafford's footwork is why he has been inconsistent. "We have used a set of drills in coaching over the years that I think has added some consistency to all the quarterbacks we've coached. The great majority of poor throws people look at the arm, and that's important obviously, but I think footwork is the key. I can pull up any gamefilm and show you how our footwork drills help you. In a nutshell, the feet and eyes work together. If I'm throwing in a particular direction, my footwork is pointing in the same direction directly at the target. We'll work on it with Matthew, and he will do them flawlessly," Caldwell said.

Lions | Matthew Stafford not feeling the heat

Fri, 20 Dec 2013 23:24:17 -0800

Despite an NFL-worst 12 turnovers in his last five games, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford says he isn't stressing about it. His passer rating has dipped below 40 in the four quarter over the last month. Stafford would not elaborate on any specifics of what has negatively affected his play, instead noting he'd like to have a few throws back.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has posted a passer rating of 61.6 or worse in three of his last four games. He is a risky fantasy football play in Week 16, especially considering his home statistics on the year. Stafford is a midrange QB1 in formats that do not heavily penalize for turnovers.

Detroit Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew said Friday, Nov. 15, that he has had to make fewer catches in heavy traffic this season with a defender right on him. It is the effect of RB Reggie Bush on offense and the ability to spread the ball to multiple receivers, leaving defenses guessing on a lot of plays. Stafford said Durham was targeted 13 times because the receiver was "winning his matchups."

Fantasy Tip: Durham is worth a look as a WR4 or flex fantasy option in leagues of 12 or more teams going forward.

Lions | Mike Thomas' roster spot in jeopardy?

Fri, 02 Aug 2013 18:22:59 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Mike Thomas has been routinely working with the third unit during training camp, and in one-on-one drills Friday, Aug. 2, he was completely shut down by CB Domonique Johnson. On one play, Thomas was so overmatched that QB Matthew Stafford didn't even throw the ball.

Fantasy Tip: Thomas might be in jeopardy of getting a visit from the turk sooner rather than later. The emergence of a guy like Patrick Edwards has not helped, as he is looking more and more like a roster lock, along with obvious locks Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson and Ryan Broyles.
