Lions | Matthew Stafford hasn't had contract talks

Mon, 09 Jan 2017 08:44:49 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he hasn't been approached by the team about a contract extension yet.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford is signed through 2017 with a $22 million cap number next season. He has really trimmed down the turnovers the last year-and-a-half under offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. He was having a great year before a finger injury derailed him. He'll be a midrange QB1 option in fantasy next season.

Lions | Matthew Stafford held in check

Sat, 07 Jan 2017 20:44:51 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 18 of his 32 passes for 205 yards and no touchdowns in a 26-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks Saturday, Jan. 7.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford's receivers didn't do him any favors by dropping several passes, but there is no denying he wasn't the same quarterback after suffering a finger injury late in the year. He should be healed up for the start of the 2017 season, and Stafford should make a solid QB1.

Lions | Rest the only cure for Matthew Stafford

Sat, 07 Jan 2017 18:27:39 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford's (finger) injured finger can't be repaired with surgery, and his finger will need to be immobilized after the season in order to heal.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford was playing well before struggling in the final three games with the injured finger. He should be back at 100 percent for the start of 2017 and is a solid QB1 option after the elite players at the position are off the board.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford became the fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach 30,000 passing yards, reaching the milestone in his 109th NFL career game. The previous record was Miami Dolphins QB Dan Marino, who reached the milestone in his 114th NFL game.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford had a strong season and will be a solid QB1 for fantasy owners playing in postseason pools.

Lions | Matthew Stafford continues full practices

Fri, 30 Dec 2016 13:44:31 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) once again practiced in full Friday, Dec. 30.

Fantasy Tip: His status for Sunday night's big showdown with the Packers for the NFC North crown isn't in any doubt, and while he's necessarily not the safest option to deploy, he'll enter Week 17 with QB1 potential in a favorable home matchup.

Lions | Another full practice for Matthew Stafford

Thu, 29 Dec 2016 16:23:46 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) was a full participant at practice for the second consecutive day Thursday, Dec. 29.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has been playing through a minor finger ailment on his throwing hand the past few weeks, but it hasn't appeared to be affecting him too bad, as he's still averaged nearly 270 yards through the air over his last two contests. With Sunday night's season finale being for the division title, and in a favorable matchup at home, Stafford will have QB1 potential for Week 17.

Lions | Matthew Stafford full go

Wed, 28 Dec 2016 15:09:24 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) participated fully in practice Wednesday, Dec. 28.

Fantasy Tip: It's a big showdown with the Green Bay Packers this week. Look for Stafford to give it his all with playoff seeding on the line. Green Bay has been vulnerable against the pass all year, too, so Stafford belongs in QB1 territory.

Sat, 24 Dec 2016 12:33:49 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) fully participated in practice Saturday, Dec. 24, and is not on the injury report for Week 16.

Lions | Full practice for Matthew Stafford

Fri, 23 Dec 2016 18:38:46 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) was a full participant in practice Friday, Dec. 23.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford struggled a bit against the Giants last week, but he draws a friendlier matchup against the Cowboys in Week 16. He is worth a look as a low-end QB1.

Lions | Matthew Stafford practices in full

Thu, 22 Dec 2016 15:56:15 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford played through his finger ailment last week and looked just fine. He could've been a bit better, but that also could have been attributed to the coldness he was playing in at the Meadowlands on Sunday. Stafford has another week-plus to rest his minor injury, and it's also notable that he'll be playing in an indoor environment at AT&T Stadium, where he's flourished throughout his career compared to outdoors. He can still be a useful QB1 on Monday night.

Lions | Matthew Stafford held in check in Week 15

Sun, 18 Dec 2016 13:28:40 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford was held scoreless and threw an interception Sunday, Dec. 18, in a 17-6 loss to the New York Giants. Stafford finished 24-for-39 for 273 yards.

Fantasy Tip: This doesn't dampen Stafford's status as a QB1, as his finger injury is more of a worry. The Giants came in with one of the best defenses in the NFL, and they did the job in Week 15. Stafford has a tough test in Week 16 against the Cowboys.

Fri, 16 Dec 2016 16:53:27 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 16, and is not on the injury report for Week 15.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford will be able to play despite the injury but may need to wear a glove on his throwing hand. He will be facing a solid New York Giants defense this week and probably should be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Lions | Matthew Stafford experimenting

Thu, 15 Dec 2016 21:19:50 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) is experimenting with the glove and tape being used to protect his injured finger, and beat writer Kyle Meinke said Stafford wasn't as sharp with his throws during practice Thursday, Dec. 15.

Fantasy Tip: The injury combined with a matchup against the stingy secondary of the New York Giants make Stafford more of a QB2 in Week 15.

Lions | Matthew Stafford full go

Thu, 15 Dec 2016 13:35:57 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford should be wearing a glove on his throwing hand to help protect his injured finger, but that shouldn't be a massive hindrance. There are certainly better starts on the slate and Stafford should be viewed as a backup option in a tough test against the New York Giants.

Lions | Matthew Stafford won't have limited playbook

Thu, 15 Dec 2016 07:15:24 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) said he doesn't anticipate the team's game plan changing in Week 15 because of his injury. Stafford said the right middle finger feels about the same, but he continues to receive treatment on it.

Fantasy Tip: History shows that Stafford has been picked a lot after finger injuries, and that includes two last week. The New York Giants are one of the best at containing the quarterback position. If you have Stafford, you're likely playing him in standard leagues. However, he's one to avoid in DFS.

Lions | Matthew Stafford fully practices

Wed, 14 Dec 2016 13:31:02 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) participated fully in practice Wednesday, Dec. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford will play this week despite dislocating his right middle finger last week. Expect him to wear a glove on his right hand, but the glove shouldn't impede his throwing much. He's a borderline QB1 but faces a stiff test in the New York Giants.

Lions | Matthew Stafford to play with finger injury

Tue, 13 Dec 2016 10:44:02 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (finger) is confident he will continue to play through his dislocated right middle ring finger in Week 15 against the New York Giants. Stafford, who also played through a broken index finger in 2011, believes this injury is not as serious as that one was, and he may not need to wear a glove either. "I've had the broken index before and played with that, and that's no fun. But this one will be a little bit different. I don't think it's going to be as bad as that one was," Stafford told WJR-AM 760.

Fantasy Tip: It is worth noting Stafford played three games while wearing a glove after suffering the first finger injury in 2011 and threw nine interceptions in those contests. The 28-year-old was already dabbling with QB2 status before the injury and his prospects aren't looking any better now with road tilts against the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys over the next two weeks. His owners may want to look in another direction as a result.

Lions | Matthew Stafford also hurt finger

Mon, 12 Dec 2016 05:08:59 -0800

Updating previous reports, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (thumb, finger) also suffered a PIP (proximal interphalangeal) joint dislocation and torn ligaments to the middle finger of his throwing hand Sunday, Dec. 11. He played with a glove the rest of the game but said it affected his grip and the velocity on his throws.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford may have some problems with inconsistency due to wearing the glove. He threw his first pick in the red zone since the 2014 season, but he should have time to adjust to wearing the glove. He remains a solid QB1.

Lions | Matthew Stafford expects to keep playing

Sun, 11 Dec 2016 16:28:30 -0800

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (thumb) suffered a dislocated thumb and torn ligaments in the Week 14 game against the Chicago Bears, a source said Sunday, Dec. 11. He is expected to play the rest of the season wearing a protective glove.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners will be happy about the fact Stafford will be able to continue playing, but his effectiveness will obviously be a huge question. If you have the roster flexibility, it might not be a bad idea to go another way.

Lions | Matthew Stafford hampered by hand injury

Sun, 11 Dec 2016 12:52:20 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (hand) suffered a hand injury when his hand hit the hand of Chicago Bears LB Leonard Floyd. Stafford wore a glove for the remainder of the game to protect his throwing hand.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford was affected somewhat by the hand injury but not enough to take him out of the game. He'll have the week to recover from it, so right now it can't be categorized as serious.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford threw for 341 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-13 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford methodically picked apart the Saints' defense for his scores, including a 66-yard strike to WR Golden Tate. Stafford has struggled at times to get the offense going this year, but he remains a strong QB1 thanks mainly to his choice of weapons on offense.

Lions | Matthew Stafford turns in decent effort

Thu, 24 Nov 2016 13:16:50 -0800

Detroit Lions WR Matthew Stafford threw for 232 yards and a touchdown in the Lions' Week 12 win over the Minnesota Vikings Thursday, Nov. 24. He also ran for 30 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford struggled at times, particularly in the second half, but his 262 total yards and touchdown should suffice for those who started him in a tougher matchup. He's usually a QB1 option on a week-to-week basis.

Sun, 20 Nov 2016 17:56:41 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 24 of his 33 pass attempts for 278 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 11 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also ran twice for no gain.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford failed to find the end zone for just the second time in 10 starts. He'll face the Vikings pass defense on Thanksgiving in a crucial NFC North battle. He threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 9 matchup with Minnesota.

Fantasy Tip: How many times have you seen this? Stafford is earning quite a reputation as Captain Comeback, and as a result he is a strong QB1 in most leagues.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford threw for 240 yards and a touchdown in a 20-13 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday, Oct. 30.

Fantasy Tip: The touchdown catch was only 1 yard to Theo Riddick, so chances are Stafford didn't net you too many fantasy points. Houston is a tough place to play, so chalk this game up to a slump after three strong outings.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 18 of his 29 pass attempts for 266 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the Week 7 game against the Washington Redskins. He also ran twice for 32 yards while picking up his 100th career NFL victory.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has three or more touchdowns in four of his seven games this season, but this line hurt most fantasy owners. He'll look to bounce back in Week 8 on the road in Houston.

Lions | Elite status for Matthew Stafford?

Wed, 19 Oct 2016 21:23:06 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will play in his 100th game in Week 7 against the Washington Redskins. He is finally performing at an elite level and showing no signs of slowing down, according to beat writer Justin Rogers. Over his past 14 games dating back to last season he has completed 65.9 percent of his passes with 33 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford should be in line for another strong week against a Redskins pass defense which ranks 18th in the NFL, allowing 242.5 yards per game through the air. He ranks eighth in the NFL in yards per game (274.7) and is tied for third with 14 passing touchdowns. Stafford has emerged as a top-end QB1 in all fantasy leagues.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 19 of his 25 pass attempts for 180 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 5 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He also ran six times for 16 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford had a season-low in pass yardage, but he posted his third game in five tries with three or more touchdown passes. He remains a solid low-end QB1 in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 6 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford threw for 213 yards and was intercepted twice Sunday, Oct. 2, in a 17-14 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford did complete two-thirds of his passes, but he struggled to find open receivers all day. It is what prevents Stafford from being an elite QB. He'll do very well one week and then have trouble against some teams.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford threw for 385 yards and scored three touchdowns in his team's 34-27 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, Sept. 25.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford led a furious second-half comeback that fell just short. He completed two-thirds of his passes and was effective more often than not. He remains a strong QB1 option in all fantasy leagues.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford went 22-for-40, passing for 260 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a Week 2 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Sept. 18.

Fantasy Tip: The entire Lions offense looked off today. Stafford gets another crack at it in a Week 3 trip to the Green Bay Packers where he'll be a fringe fantasy starter.

Lions | Detroit going no-huddle often

Thu, 25 Aug 2016 06:12:39 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford and the other Lions quarterbacks have run a no-huddle offense 62% of the time this preseason. The Lions ran a no-huddle offense just 7% of the time last season. According to ProFootballFocus, Stafford has completed all six of his passes for 108 yards when targeting WRs Golden Tate and Marvin Jones out of the no-huddle. He's 6-for-11 passing for 63 yards on the rest of his throws combined. Overall, Stafford has completed 70.6% of his passes this preseason.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford had a big second half last year with 19 touchdowns and two interceptions when offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter took over. He lost Megatron to retirement, but the show appears to roll on. Stafford is in the lower-middle portion of starting quarterbacks, but he could be on the cusp of that breakthrough year.

Lions | Matthew Stafford wants quicker pace

Fri, 19 Aug 2016 14:08:14 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he hopes the offense plays at a quicker pace this season. He has gone 12-for-17 for 171 yards in two preseason games when the team has used an up-tempo offense.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford played well once Jim Bob Cooter became the offensive coordinator last season and should continue to improve this season. He did lose Calvin Johnson during the offseason but still has several weapons to work with in the passing game. Stafford probably should be a high-end No. 2 quarterback in most leagues but could be used as a starter against certain opponents.

Lions | Anquan Boldin expects to work in slot

Wed, 03 Aug 2016 21:23:57 -0700

Detroit Lions WR Anquan Boldin has been a steady target for QB Matthew Stafford throughout training camp, according to beat writer Tim Twentyman. He is expected to step into the slot and add toughness, experience and production to the position group.

Fantasy Tip: Boldin posted 69 receptions, 789 yards and four touchdowns last season in San Francisco despite a shaky quarterback situation. He is playing with a much better quarterback and similar production can be expected despite the fact he is 35 years old. Consider him a solid WR4 or flex option in most fantasy formats.

Lions | Mathew Stafford expects different offense

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 20:55:12 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he expects to lean on the running game a little more in 2016 with WR Calvin Johnson now retired. "I think it'll make us different," he said Thursday, July 28. "It's on us to make it more dangerous. We got to go out there and make the plays."

Fantasy Tip: It's tough to gauge how Stafford will perform without Johnson leading the passing attack, but he should still be viewed as a high-end QB2.

Lions | Matthew Stafford unsung so far

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 16:54:25 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford tallied over 4,200 passing yards and 32 touchdowns last season, throwing nearly 600 passes.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford finished as the No. 8 quarterback in fantasy leagues last year, but he's only being drafted as the No. 19 quarterback. His volume alone should give him more consideration, even if Calvin Johnson is gone. Detroit will continue to throw a lot, and Stafford still has good weapons at his disposal. It's safer to draft him as a high-end QB2, but he could reach QB1 again in 2016.

Lions | Detroit offense tougher for defenses?

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 17:50:14 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford believes his offense will be tougher to defend without former WR Calvin Johnson. Stafford said defenses won't know who the Lions will go to on offense, whereas most of the time in previous years Johnson was their go-to guy.

Fantasy Tip: Golden Tate takes over as the No. 1 wide receiver in Detroit, and he's a WR2 candidate in 2016. Marvin Jones figures to be the No. 2 receiver, but he shouldn't be viewed as more than a WR4 with WR3 upside.

Lions | Matthew Stafford will still let it fly

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 05:58:22 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed a career-best 67.2% of his passes during the 2015 season, but offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter still wants to utilize Stafford's big arm and gunslinger mentality.

"We're not going to bury that guy yet," Cooter said after organized team activities finished. "We had to do what we had to do last year with certain instances, kind of where we were in the season, and some of that showed up in the game tape. I don't think we'll put any restraints on our quarterback. So there may be some short passes, there may be some long ones. So we're not going to restrain him at all."

Fantasy Tip: While Stafford is still best viewed as a No. 2 quarterback and matchup play, he thrived in Cooter's offense after the midseason switch up and now has a full offseason working in the system. It's still tough to gauge the offense without Calvin Johnson, though, and Stafford's inconsistency prevents him from being a set-and-forget option.

Lions | Film different for Matthew Stafford

Mon, 30 May 2016 11:30:22 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is approaching film study in a more traditional fashion this year. Stafford believes defensive looks will be more standard with former WR Calvin Johnson now retired. "Some things are going to look differently to us because of the fact that there was always the Calvin factor," head coach Jim Caldwell said, "just in terms of what kind of coverage he was going to get."

Fantasy Tip: Golden Tate takes over as the Lions' top wide receiver now, but he won't attract nearly as much attention as Johnson. Tate should be viewed as a WR2 with extra value in PPR leagues.

Lions | T.J. Jones on the verge of a breakout?

Sat, 28 May 2016 12:38:29 -0700

Detroit Lions WR T.J. Jones was "one of the obvious stars" in a recent organized team activity on Thursday, May 26, and has earned praised from head coach Jim Caldwell and QB Matthew Stafford for his offseason work.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Marvin Jones will absorb a good chunk of the 150 targets left behind by Calvin Johnson, there is going to be room for a player like T.J. Jones to make some noise for Detroit post-Megatron. The Lions also added Jeremy Kerley as a free agent, but he is primarily a slot receiver - a spot Golden Tate usually occupies in three-wide sets. As such, T.J. Jones is a name owners in all leagues should keep on their watch lists this season.

Lions | Matthew Stafford won't be traded

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 13:54:56 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will not be traded, according to general manager Bob Quinn.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford has had his ups and downs with the Lions over the years. He has always flirted with being a borderline QB1 and a high-end QB2. The loss of Calvin Johnson really hurts his fantasy value, obviously, so it might be safer to take him more as a high-end QB2.

Lions | Matthew Stafford looks to build on '15

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 09:59:35 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is hopeful he still has a hot hand after he exploded for 20 touchdowns, to only four interceptions, and a 105.1 passer rating in nine games with offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter last season.

"We just see (football) the same way, talk about it the same way and that's not to say we like the same stuff all the time," Stafford said of Cooter. "He likes some stuff that I'm not comfortable with, and I'm comfortable with some stuff that he doesn't like, and that's the way it goes. You pick your battles and go from there."

Fantasy Tip: Stafford is losing Megatron this season, but they added Marvin Jones to a stable that includes Golden Tate and a budding Eric Ebron. Stafford is right on that low-end QB1/high-end QB2 seesaw in fantasy.

Lions | Calvin Johnson was wearing down

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 17:13:31 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford said he knew the NFL was "wearing on" retired WR Calvin Johnson. "Not to say that I expected it, but I wasn't shocked," Stafford said Friday, March 25. "I've known Calvin for seven years and know the effort and the attitude that he plays with, and it takes a toll on people. And he was catching quite a few passes and getting hit quite a bunch, and so it takes a toll."

Fantasy Tip: With Johnson out of the mix, Golden Tate is a low-end WR2 candidate, and Marvin Jones sneak into WR3 territory.

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 11:49:16 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford still has the belief of the team, and they're still high on him, according to general manager Bob Quinn.

Lions | Jim Bob Cooter likely to remain

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 09:17:17 -0800

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter is likely to remain on the coaching staff now that the Lions announced that head coach Jim Caldwell will be retained for another season. Cooter helped QB Matthew Stafford to the most consistent stretch of his seven-year career in the second half of this season.

Fantasy Tip: This has to be considered a win for Stafford's 2016 fantasy value. Cooter was great for the entire Detroit offense in the second half of the year, and big things will be expected next year. Stafford is a legitimate QB1 but could be downgraded if Calvin Johnson retires this offseason.

Lions | Matthew Stafford to meet with GM

Mon, 11 Jan 2016 12:30:15 -0800

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will meet with new general manager Bob Quinn before a decision is made on head coach Jim Caldwell.

Fantasy Tip: Caldwell's status is still very much in question, but Quinn has fully endorsed Stafford as a big part of the Lions' future. The fact that Quinn wants to meet with Stafford before making a decision on Caldwell also speaks to the value Stafford has in the eyes of Quinn.
