Lions | Continuity should help team in 2012

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford feels the team should benefit from its continuity on the coaching staff in 2012. "We have the same coordinators the last three years and a lot of the same players, so from that standpoint, we don't have to put in the base offense or base defense. We're just tweaking and adding on right now," Stafford said. "And then obviously, I think we're better because of the draft picks we got. Every year, you add talent as a team through free agency and the draft, and we were able to do that again this year."

Detroit Lions rookie OT Riley Reiff, the team's first-round draft pick, should be a cornerstone on the offensive line for years to come. He will be given every opportunity to succeed in his rookie season and is expected to come in to compete immediately. He may not, however, replace LT Jeff Backus right away. The selection of Reiff wasn't a knock against Backus, but the reality is their veteran tackle is getting older and they need to protect QB Matthew Stafford long term.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has agreed to restructure his contract in order to create salary cap space for the team. Stafford could have saved the team as much as $7.2 million if he converted his $11.5 million base salary in 2012 to the veteran minimum.

If the Detroit Lions ends up using the franchise tag on DL Cliff Avril, it will have a price tag of $10.6 million. Between Avril, WR Calvin Johnson, QB Matthew Stafford and DL Ndamukong Suh, the four players would cost up to $61.624, according to league sources with knowledge of the situation.

Former NFL RB Marshall Faulk said he is not impressed with Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford's 5,000-yard passing season in 2011. Faulk said those type of numbers are now the norm in today's NFL. "Throwing for 5,000 yards in the NFL right now is nothing," Faulk said. "I don't want to take anything away from it. As much as people throw the football now, you better have 5,000 (yards) if you have Calvin Johnson."

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford's 2012 salary has increased by $1 million and is now scheduled to make $11.5 million because he fulfilled an escalator clause in his contract. His 2013 salary has will increase $500,000 and is scheduled to make $12 million.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford was named The Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year Saturday, Feb. 4. Stafford became one of just four quarterbacks in the history of the NFL to throw for more than 5,000 yards (5,038) and 40 touchdowns (41) in a season. "It's an honor," Stafford said. "There were a lot guys up there that were deserving as well; you saw the candidates and some of the nominees, and you know how hard they worked to get back."

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 28 of 43 passes for 380 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in his playoff debut in the Wild Card game loss Saturday, Jan. 7, against the New Orleans Saints. Stafford also had a rushing touchdown in the game.
