Lions | Matthew Stafford receives treatment

Sun, 28 Sep 2014 14:10:41 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford (hand, leg) had the back of his throwing hand or wrist bandaged by the training staff after the Week 4 game against the New York Jets, and the training staff also appeared to be looking at his left leg in the locker room.

Fantasy Tip: Stafford made it through the entire game, finishing with 293 passing yards and two touchdowns while also running for another score. That was an impressive stat line considering he was playing with his favorite target, Calvin Johnson, very limited due to an ankle injury.

Lions | Matthew Stafford not forcing it to Megatron

Fri, 19 Sep 2014 09:26:19 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford hasn't been forcing the ball to WR Calvin Johnson, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Caldwell said the fact that Stafford has targeted Johnson 24 times, way more than any other receiver on the team, just shows that the team wants to get the ball to their best weapons as often as possible. "I think if it hadn't been for the interception (Stafford threw Sunday), nobody would even say a word about whether or not they think that he's forcing the ball to Calvin," Caldwell continued. "And that was on a deep post pattern, and really he had exactly what we were looking for, you can see Calvin starting to run by both guys, and (Matthew) just had to get it out there a little bit more. That was the only issue."

Fantasy Tip: Johnson owners won't mind the fact that he's the most targeted receiver on the team, as expected. Johnson is the highest-priced receiver at FantasyScore this week at $8,800, but he has a great matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

Lions | Matthew Stafford shows improved footwork

Tue, 09 Sep 2014 09:41:18 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford showed improved footwork in his ability to climb the pocket when he was pressured in Week 1 against the New York Giants Monday, Sept. 8, his first start in the Jim Caldwell era. Sloppy footwork has been part of Stafford's problems in the past. He also seemed to make a conscious effort not to force passes to receivers that weren't open. Stafford finished the victory going 22-for-32 for 346 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a rushing touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: It was refreshing to see a more comfortable Stafford in this new offense. We knew he was capable of putting up big numbers in Detroit, but if he takes the next step, he could be the most valuable fantasy passer in 2014. He's a must-start every week in standard leagues. He faces a much tougher task in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers, but he still may be worth the $8,000 price (16.0% of cap) at FantasyScore.

Lions | Matthew Stafford working hard

Mon, 14 Jul 2014 07:38:54 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford impressed backup QB Dan Orlovsky with his work ethic this offseason in learning the new offense. Stafford spent his own time going over the offense with the new staff this offseason. "There was so much uncertainty, just trying to figure out how we'd run this offense," Stafford said. "I just wanted to make sure that once we started playing and practicing, I was as well equipped and well prepared as I could be."

Fantasy Tip: It appears Stafford gets it. While this may not translate into much as far as his production goes, the fact that he isn't resting on his laurels bodes well for his progression into his prime years. Stafford remains a solid fantasy QB1.

Lions | Matthew Stafford will have more control of the offense

Thu, 12 Jun 2014 19:18:17 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford will be given more freedom to adjust plays before the snap this season, and he is looking forward to the opportunity. "It obviously kinds of gives you the chalk last," Stafford said. "And that's what you're looking for when you play quarterback."

Fantasy Tip: The Lions have plenty of weapons on offense so giving Stafford the ability to change plays at the line should allow him to exploit some favorable matchups as they arise. While Stafford will have to show he can make the proper decisions, the idea of him having more control of a new high-powered passing attack should get the attention of fantasy owners. He has a good chance to be a midrange QB1 this season.

"It's something we use to focus in on the quarterback's fundamentals and techniques. It doesn't leave him," Caldwell said. "It also gives you a real good view of what's happening in the middle of the defense."

Lions | Matthew Stafford a perfect fit in new offense

Tue, 10 Jun 2014 19:25:23 -0700

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is a perfect fit for the team's new offense and is in line to have a big year, according to RB Reggie Bush. The Lions brought in offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi this year to run a high-powered attack similar to the version used by the New Orleans Saints, and Bush is familiar with Lombardi and the offense from his time with the Saints.

Fantasy Tip: While Stafford may not become Drew Brees overnight simply because of a similar offensive attack, Detroit certainly has surrounded him with the weapons he needs to have the big season that Bush mentioned. After struggling down the stretch last season, Stafford could be in for a rebound year.
