Fantasy Tip: Get Bailey into your weekly lineups. He'll return immediately to the closer's role, but John Farrell indicated that he probably won't pitch on back-to-back days initially. For that reason, Junichi Tazawa may retain some value in deep mixed leagues for a bit.

The Boston Red Sox are expected to activate RP Andrew Bailey (biceps) from the 15-day disabled list Monday, May 20. Manager John Farrell said the team will be careful with Bailey until he gets back to his normal workload. Farrell said the team will initially try to avoid using Bailey on back-to-back days.
Fantasy Tip: Bailey likely will regain his closer role once he rejoins the bullpen, but the team likely will be cautious with him for the first few days since he is coming back from the injury. Owners should look to add him back to their lineups. RP Junichi Tazawa likely will go back to being used in late-inning situations.

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (biceps) will return from the disabled list at the latest Monday, May 20. He will throw a simulated game Thursday, May 16, and the team will then decide if they'll have him pitch in a minor league game before being activated.
Fantasy Tip: It seems likely that Boston will have Bailey pitch in a rehab game, but he could still make his return this weekend. Junichi Tazawa will go back to a setup role when Bailey returns, but he's worth hanging onto in deep leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Junichi Tazawa will hold onto his value as the fill-in closer for another week it looks like. Tazawa has some long-term value as a handcuff to the oft-injured Bailey for the rest of the season, though, now that Joel Hanrahan (elbow) is done for the season. Those in deep mixed leagues will have to consider hanging onto Tazawa for that reason, and the fact that he's putting up great numbers.

Fantasy Tip: Because of Bailey's extensive injury history, the BoSox are being cautious. Expect him to need at least one rehab outing in the minors before returning. Boston can afford to take their time, since they have Junichi Tazawa capably filling in in ninth-inning duties. Tazawa's time as a closer may run out soon, but he remains a long-term option for saves given Bailey's injury-prone ways and with Joel Hanrahan (elbow) out for the season.

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (back) played catch for the second straight day Friday, May 10, but there is no date scheduled for him to throw off a mound. It looks doubtful that Bailey will be ready to come off the disabled list when eligible Tuesday, May 14.
Fantasy Tip: With Joel Hanrahan (forearm) out indefinitely and facing Tommy John surgery, those who poached Junichi Tazawa off the wire are sitting pretty right now. Koji Uehara could steal a few saves if Bailey's DL stint lingers, but John Farrell has been hesitant to use him frequently.

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (biceps) played catch Thursday, May 9, and doesn't know when he will return to the team, but he gave the indication that he won't be ready to return when eligible to come off the disabled list May 14.
Fantasy Tip: It's not a surprise that Bailey doesn't expect himself to be ready to return when eligible; he's a slow healer, folks. That makes those that bought Junichi Tazawa a little happier. As long as Bailey is out, Tazawa will receive the save chances in the ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Boston has indicated that Bailey's injury isn't serious, but it serves them well to be as cautious as can be with this injury-prone arm. You would expect them to continue this approach and make sure he is 100 percent ready to return by making him go on a rehab assignment, even if it's a short one. Junichi Tazawa will hold down the fort in the ninth inning until Bailey returns, but expect Bailey to be given the job back once he's ready.

The Boston Red Sox placed RP Joel Hanrahan (forearm) on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain Tuesday, May 7, and recalled SP Allen Webster from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move. Webster will make the start Wednesday, May 8, and SP Felix Doubront will move to the bullpen starting Tuesday.
Fantasy Tip: It's probably safe now to drop Hanrahan in mixed leagues since Andrew Bailey (biceps) is expected to return from the DL before him. Hanrahan lost his opportunity to work his way back into the closer's role, and now Junichi Tazawa is closing out games. Webster could be valuable in AL leagues depending on how long he'll stick in the rotation.

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell prefers to leave RP Koji Uehara in the eighth-inning setup role with both RPs Andrew Bailey (biceps) and Joel Hanrahan (forearm) injured. "The one thing I like with Koji is you're going to get those pinch-hit left-handers in the eighth inning, and he's so effective against lefties," Farrell said. "That's where you might get a little bit of that gamesmanship or the matchup capability in the eighth inning." Uehara doesn't typically like to throw on back-to-back days, either, in an effort to keep himself healthy. Farrell also cited that Tazawa has a better fastball than Uehara, which should make him more effective in the closer's role.
Fantasy Tip: Uehara's peripherals have been stellar this season, making him valuable in deeper mixed leagues even if he's not closing. Plus, the Red Sox's bullpen is in flux now due to all the injuries, so there's still a chance that Uehara could wind up closing in the long term if Junichi Tazawa proves ineffective and Bailey doesn't stay healthy.
