Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said he will continue to use RPs Junichi Tazawa, Craig Breslow and Brandon Workman in the eighth inning depending on which reliever is well rested.

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (shoulder) will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday, July 24, to fix a torn capsule, damage to his labrum and a strain of one of the muscles of his rotator cuff. The estimated recovery time is 12 months.
Fantasy Tip: Bailey's injury woes continue to affect his fantasy value. Koji Uehara doesn't really have anyone challenging him for save chances anytime soon, unless the BoSox go out and acquire another bullpen contributor before the trade deadline. Junichi Tazawa and Matt Thornton become even more important in setup roles now.

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey was an option to close on Sunday, July 7, manager John Farrell said. Bailey is the first reliever Farrell mentioned when asked who would be available to fill in for RP Koji Uehara, whom Farrell wanted to avoid using in that contest if possible. Farrell elaborated, saying that he'd like to get the game to RP Junichi Tazawa and Bailey late. Bailey recorded more than three outs in a game this season for the first time on Saturday, July 6, and he's improving. When asked if he'd like to see Uehara back in a setup role, Farrell responded, "Koji in the eighth or the ninth, depending on who else is available to close out games."
Fantasy Tip: The story also points out that Farrell stated Bailey's return to dominance would allow everyone to slide back into their normal roles. It's becoming kind of clear that the skipper wants to see Bailey back in the ninth, so fantasy owners should tuck him away where available.

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Miller (foot) will undergo season-ending surgery on his foot.
Fantasy Tip: This is a blow to the BoSox's bullpen, but thankfully, Junichi Tazawa has performed well against lefties as well. Koji Uehara remains the team's closer, but Andrew Bailey is gaining steam and could be the primary setup man soon if he continues to pitch well.

The Boston Red Sox placed RP Andrew Miller (foot) on the 15-day disabled list with a left foot injury Monday, July 8, and recalled P Alfredo Aceves from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move. X-rays on Miller's foot were negative, but he's dealing with more soreness. Miller is 1-2 with a 2.64 ERA this year and left-handers are hitting only .155 against him. RPs Andrew Bailey and Junichi Tazawa will continue to set up RP Koji Uehara in the ninth.
Bailey is gaining manager John Farrell's trust again after 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief Sunday, July 7, after Miller got hurt. Tazawa has limited left-handers to a .247 average.

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said Sunday, July 7, that he is hopeful RPs Andrew Bailey and Junichi Tazawa can fill the void as setup men for closer RP Koji Uehara following the injury to RP Andrew Miller (foot).

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell isn't ruling out using RP Koji Uehara for the third straight day Friday, June 28. If he's not available, the team will go with the best matchup in a save situation.
Fantasy Tip: It's unlikely that Uehara is used given the team's reluctance to have him pitch on back-to-back days earlier this year. If he doesn't go, Junichi Tazawa or Andrew Miller would likely be used over Andrew Bailey.

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey is confident that he'll regain the closer's role after being demoted Thursday, June 20. "Hopefully, we have save opportunities every night," manager John Farrell said. "If he's not available, we have confidence it could be Junichi (Tazawa), it could be Andrew Miller and in time Andrew Bailey." The team's decision to use RP Koji Uehara as the primary closer is mainly due to his experience in the role before.
Farrell is leaving the door open for Bailey to reclaim the job, though. "I thought last night, despite the outcome, he was down in the zone better and used his breaking ball a little bit more, but it ends up in a two-run homer to walk if off for them," Farrell said. "He needs to regain some momentum and some confidence on his part, realize some positive results and carries that back into the ninth inning." Bailey has allowed four home runs and seven earned runs in his last five outings.
Fantasy Tip: Don't give up on Bailey. If Farrell is open to Bailey regaining the job, it could easily happen, although a timetable for that possibility is impossible to predict. He'll likely need Koji Uehara or Junichi Tazawa to falter, too.

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara is not worried about his workload after being anointed the new closer. "I'm not going to change anything," Uehara said. "It's just something that we stayed away from during spring training, but I'm completely fine with (pitching back-to-back days)." It's unknown how long manager John Farrell will keep Uehara as the closer over demoted RP Andrew Bailey, who has lost some life on his fastball.
Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen if Farrell is comfortable using Uehara on back-to-back days, which is why Junichi Tazawa should also be owned by save chasers.

Indications are that the Boston Red Sox will use RP Koji Uehara as their new closer, at least for now.
Fantasy Tip: Uehara has excellent peripherals and was even worth owning before this declaration. His age and durability issues are a concern, though, meaning Junichi Tazawa should still be owned for those hoping for an occasional save opp. Don't outright drop Andrew Bailey in mixed leagues yet. There's a chance he can regain this job. Run to the waiver wire and add Uehara immediately.
