Red Sox | Koji Uehara finished for 2015

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 14:21:46 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (wrist) has a non-displaced distal fracture of his right wrist and will miss the remainder of the season, the team announced Monday, Aug. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Seasonal owners can drop Uehara in all formats. Jean Machi was named the ninth-inning replacement Monday, and you'll want to grab him from the waiver wire immediately, if you're in need of saves. Machi hasn't been overly effective this season, though, as he owns a 5.35 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP and a 6.3 K/9. Don't rule Junichi Tazawa out of seeing the odd save chance, either, and he could even end up taking over the role entirely at some point.

Red Sox | Jean Machi to close

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 11:57:24 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Jean Machi will close with RP Koji Uehara (wrist) sidelined, according to manager John Farrell. Machi only has three career saves.

Fantasy Tip: Surprisingly, newly acquired Machi will close games over Junichi Tazawa, who has been getting the job done as Uehara's eighth-inning setup man. Run to the waiver wire and add Machi immediately if you're in need of saves. Tazawa could vulture a save here or there, but you can largely avoid him for now.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara heading to DL

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 10:58:26 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (wrist) will land on the disabled list Monday, Aug. 10, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Jean Machi, who the Red Sox acquired recently off waivers, will serve as the closer with Uehara on the DL, according to manager John Farrell. Add Machi immediately if you're in need of saves for your fantasy staff. Junichi Tazawa could vulture a save here or there, but he can be ignored in most leagues.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara to undergo CAT scan

Sun, 09 Aug 2015 11:37:07 -0700

Boston Red Sox CL Koji Uehara (wrist) is scheduled to undergo a precautionary CAT scan Sunday, Aug. 9, after swelling has gone down in his right wrist. He hasn't pitched since Friday, Aug. 7.

Fantasy Tip: The team does not believe Uehara has sustained further damage to his wrist but wants to be sure he is fine before allowing him to resume pitching. He is 2-4 with a 2.23 ERA and 25 saves through 43 games.

Red Sox | Several BOS players receiving interest

Fri, 24 Jul 2015 17:21:44 -0700

The Boston Red Sox have received interest from other teams in OF Shane Victorino and RPs Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa.

Fantasy Tip: The oft-injured Victorino ($2,700, 5.2% of cap) is hitting .247 in 89 at-bats this season with just one home run and four RBIs entering play Friday, July 24, and is not a great FantasyScore option at this point. Uehara has a 2.67 ERA and 22 saves in 37 games this year, while Tazawa has struck out 41 batters over 40 2/3 innings with a 2.88 ERA through 42 games.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara may be rested

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 10:26:42 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara has appeared in three straight games, and the Red Sox would prefer to give him the day off Wednesday, July 1. He hasn't worked on four straight days all year. "I'm not going to say he's not available but at the same time we'd like to do everything we can to stay away," manager John Farrell said.

Fantasy Tip: Alexi Ogando is unavailable, too, so if a save situation arises Wednesday afternoon, expect the chance to go to Junichi Tazawa. Tazawa has fine peripherals to go along with a 2.62 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 2015. He's definitely a reliever worth owning in deeper leagues to help your pitching stats.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara implodes in ninth

Thu, 04 Jun 2015 18:08:35 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara had an outing to forget Thursday, June 4, against the Minnesota Twins. Uehara allowed four runs (two earned) off three hits without registering an out, after entering the top of the ninth with the game tied at four.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara has blown just two saves this season, with the most recent coming in his second last outing, May 31, against the Texas Rangers. It wasn't a blown save this time out, but the two earned runs match a season high for Uehara, while the four total runs are a new season high. Uehara is likely still safe in the closer's role, but owners in deeper leagues could speculatively add Junichi Tazawa.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara gaining steam

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 06:43:00 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara's fastball averaged 87.25 mph Monday, April 27, which was a 2 mph leap from his previous outing. His fastball velocity increased slightly to 87.33 mph Wednesday, April 29, and he showed an ability to locate.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara appears to be kicking off the rust as he has struck out five in his last two perfect innings. He is a solid first reliever in traditional leagues.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara shaky in 2015

Mon, 27 Apr 2015 12:03:27 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara has a BABIP (batting average on balls in play) of .313 compared to .211 last April, and his overall velocity is down this year at 79.5 mph compared to 84.6 mph last season. Uehara is also showing a lack of confidence in his fastball early in the season, as he's throwing his fastball just 15.3% and splitters 84.7% of the time. Opponents appear to be less tempted to swing at both Uehara's fastballs and splitters outside the zone in 2015. He currently has a 4.15 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara continues his struggles from the second half of last season, and an injury that delayed his 2015 season isn't helping. He's a shaky fantasy closer that should be handcuffed to Edward Mujica or Junichi Tazawa, if you can.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara blows it in 10th

Sun, 26 Apr 2015 05:19:27 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara blew a 10th-inning save opportunity Saturday, April 25, in a loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Uehara inherited a one-run lead, but took the loss after allowing a triple to OF Adam Jones, a sacrifice fly to 1B Chris Davis and a home run to OF David Lough.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara has three saves in five appearances so far this season. With this outing leading to his first blown save of the season, Uehara remains safe for now in the closer role. Uehara's 12.46 K/9 would have him tied for 18th amongst relievers if he had enough innings to qualify. Owners need to remain patient, although injuries are the bigger concern for the 40-year-old.
