Red Sox | Koji Uehara to come off DL

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 04:45:13 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) will come off the 15-day disabled list Monday, April 13, as planned. Manager John Farrell has already made Uehara the closer once again.

Fantasy Tip: This will bring some stability to the Red Sox bullpen, which needs it after the hammering the pitching staff took Sunday, April 12, against the New York Yankees. Be careful with Uehara, however, as his injury history makes him more likely to be out.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara nearing return

Fri, 10 Apr 2015 09:44:28 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) could come off the disabled list Monday, April 13, after his rehab appearance Saturday, April 11. "We'll take it one outing at a time," manager John Farrell said. "We're not ruling out the possibility that (Uehara could be back) after one outing."

Fantasy Tip: Uehara was flat out amazing for the last two years. Still, he is 40 years old, and he'll need to be handled carefully. He's a good option as your first closer if the team does so.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara eyeing Monday return

Thu, 09 Apr 2015 14:51:07 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) threw a 20-pitch simulated game Thursday, April 9, and will pitch a rehab game Saturday, April 11. There is a good chance Uehara will be activated Monday, April 13.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara will return to the closer role for Boston which will zap the majority of Edward Mujica's fantasy value. However, at 40, age and health are still minor concerns for Uehara. Return him to your lineups in all formats, but his best years are likely in the rear-view mirror.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara throws to hitters

Tue, 07 Apr 2015 09:55:27 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) threw 30 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday, April 7, and generates plenty of swings and misses, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara has started the 2015 season on the disabled list, but if he continues to make good progress, he may not miss much time. Edward Mujica is expected to see the first opportunity for a save chance in the meantime, and he has short-term value in standard fantasy leagues with Uehara sidelined.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara placed on DL

Fri, 03 Apr 2015 13:07:11 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) was placed on the disabled list Friday, April 3. He could be activated as early as Friday, April 10.

Fantasy Tip: At 40, age and health are major concerns for Uehara, and he projects as a shaky source of saves. Edward Mujica will assume the closing role to open the season. Mujica is worth targeting as an early season saves candidate, and there is a legitimate chance he could out pitch Uehara and keep the job, too. Junichi Tazawa is also in the ninth-inning conversation, and there is potential the Red Sox bullpen remains murky for the majority of the season.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara likely to start on DL

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 08:59:00 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) felt more pain in his left hamstring after throwing 30 pitches in a bullpen session Monday, March 30, and he's likely to start the season on the 15-day disabled list, according to manager John Farrell. Farrell said he's unsure if the team will keep seven or eight men in the bullpen, and he's unsure if RP Edward Mujica will assume the closing role to open up the year.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara, who turns 40 this Friday, has dealt with hamstring problems in the past, too. Age and injury concerns already made Uehara a shaky saves contributor this spring. Mujica is the favorite to see most of the save chances in Uehara's absence. Target him first in your fantasy leagues if he's still on the waiver wire. Junichi Tazawa isn't a bad consolation prize, and his skills are more intriguing.

Red Sox | Edward Mujica could close

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 07:22:31 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Edward Mujica could begin the season as the team's closer, with RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) considered unlikely for opening day. Manager John Farrell also said using matchups could also be an option for the team in the ninth inning.

Fantasy Tip: Mujica has 49 career saves, with a career-high 37 in 2013 while with the St. Louis Cardinals. If Mujica is handed the Red Sox's closer job to begin the season he'll be an excellent player to target in the late rounds of fantasy drafts. Mujica is worth a flier with a near 40-year-old Uehara facing several injury concerns, but Junichi Tazawa will figure in as well.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara unlikely for OD

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 07:18:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) was downgraded to unlikely for opening day, Sunday, March 29, by manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Already hampered by injury, the almost 40-year-old Uehara enters the 2015 fantasy season with considerable risk. Uehara's performance has remained relatively stable as an elite-level reliever, but the injury concerns are piling up. RP Edward Mujica appears likely to begin the season as the Red Sox closer, and can be had in the late rounds of drafts, or for a very-low cost on FantasyScore to begin the season.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara throws Thursday

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:25:54 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) made 60 throws on flat ground Thursday, March 26, which manager John Farrell called "a sizeable step forward." Uehara will throw a bullpen session Saturday, March 28, and might appear in a spring game Monday, March 30.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara is in danger of not being ready for opening day, especially if he has any further setbacks with his hamstring. If you're keeping track at home, Edward Mujica is likely next in line for saves if Uehara isn't ready, but Junichi Tazawa has the more intriguing skills in the late innings. If you're scrounging for saves to start the year, both are worth owning.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara running out of time

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 10:10:34 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) is unsure when he'll throw from a mound again, so the team is preparing as if they won't have him on opening day. Manager John Farrell said there is "growing concern" that he won't be ready on April 6. There is also concern that Uehara's hamstring injury will linger on after he returns to pitching. Boston is hoping he can throw off flat ground in the coming days and then a bullpen by the end of the weekend. Uehara has only pitched in three spring games and hasn't appeared since March 14. Batters were hitting .467 against him and his ERA was 6.00.

Fantasy Tip: At age 40, it's scary to think that Uehara could be breaking down. If you choose to select him as a fantasy baseball closer, make sure you handcuff him with Junichi Tazawa. Tazawa and Edward Mujica could both be candidates for saves if Uehara opens on the disabled list, but Tazawa is the much more attractive fantasy asset.
