Red Sox | Koji Uehara out until September?

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 13:47:54 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (pectoral) received a platelet rich plasma injection Friday, July 22, but he does not have a firm return timeline currently. ESPNBoston.com's Scott Lauber speculates Uehara will be out until Thursday, September 1.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara is a potential stash candidate if you have the luxury of additional bench spots or DL slots. However, given his potential return timeline, he likely won't be in the mix for the ninth-inning gig when healthy. There probably isn't a lot of fantasy value ahead for the 41-year-old reliever.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara lands on DL

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 11:22:01 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (pectoral) was put on the disabled list with a right pectoral strain Wednesday, July 20, and RP Noe Ramirez was recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: So with Craig Kimbrel (knee) also on the DL, Brad Ziegler is now in line for save chances yet again after being traded over from Arizona earlier this month. Ziegler isn't your prototypical strikeout closer, but he's done a fine job in recent years and should be picked up immediately if his previous owner cut him. Junichi Tazawa is expected back off the DL Friday and could vulture a few save chances if Ziegler needs to be rested.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara departs with pec injury

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 21:50:43 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (pectoral) threw just seven pitches against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, July 19, before feeling something in his right pectoral muscle and being removed from the game. He's set to be evaluated on Wednesday, July 20.

Fantasy Tip: With Craig Kimbrel (knee) on the shelf, an injury to Uehara is the last thing the BoSox need. Hopefully the injury won't be too severe, but expect Brad Ziegler to be the top option to close games if Uehara is forced to miss time. That gives Ziegler some short-term appeal for anyone foraging for saves.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara the primary closer

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 19:02:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara will be the closer while RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) is sidelined, and RP Brad Ziegler will close on days when Uehara is not available, manager John Farrell said Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Both Uehara and Ziegler are still worth adding if you need saves, but Uehara is obviously the preferred option.

Red Sox | Brad Ziegler, Koji Uehara to close

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 11:04:38 -0700

Boston Red Sox RPs Brad Ziegler and Koji Uehara will both receive opportunities to close games while RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) is on the disabled list, according to manager John Farrell. However, Ziegler is not expected to join the club in time for the game against the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler went 2-3 with a 2.82 ERA and 18 saves in 36 appearances for Arizona, with 15 walks and 27 strikeouts over 38 1/3 innings, while Uehara is 2-3 with a 4.96 ERA and three saves through 35 games, with nine walks and 46 strikeouts over 32 2/3 innings. Although Ziegler's strikeout totals are low for a closer and Uehara has posted a 7.00 ERA in 10 games over the past four weeks, both relievers should be rostered in AL-only fantasy leagues and by owners in mixed formats who are desperate for saves.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara notches save

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 21:11:32 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara picked up his third save of the season, allowing one run on one hits while striking out one against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday July 8.

Fantasy Tip: With Craig Kimbrel dealing with a knee injury and likely to be sidelined at least through the All-Star break, Uehara is a must-add option. At worst, he is a short-term candidate for a few saves.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara in rough patch

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 16:02:58 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara has allowed six runs on nine hits (three home runs) in his last 6 1/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara has seen his ERA on the year shoot up to 4.57, but he still has a respectable 1.06 WHIP, and he's striking out 12.0 per nine innings. His fantasy value remains limited as the primary setup man to closer Craig Kimbrel, but he can be useful in deeper league to help stabilize your pitching ratios.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara picks up save

Sun, 29 May 2016 16:23:04 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara picked up his first save of the season Sunday, May 29, striking out two in a perfect inning against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Fantasy Tip: Craig Kimbrell threw 39 pitches and blew the save the day before, so it wasn't a surprise to see Uehara close things out. The pitch count likely dictated the decision, and Kimbrell's job isn't in jeopardy.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara feeling fine

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 11:40:38 -0800

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (wrist) said his wrist feels fine and has already been throwing off a mound. He's completely fine with being an eighth-inning setup man and is not contemplating retirement.

Fantasy Tip: The 40-year-old former closer has obvious injury concerns, but his swinging-strike rate remains excellent. However, with almost all of the save chances going to Craig Kimbrel now, Uehara's fantasy value takes a massive hit.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara moving to eighth inning

Mon, 16 Nov 2015 09:05:19 -0800

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara will move to an eighth-inning role after the Red Sox acquired RP Craig Kimbrel Friday, Nov. 13. RP Junichi Tazawa will handle the seventh inning. Uehara finished last year on the disabled list with a broken right wrist.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara will lose the majority of his fantasy appeal now without consistent save chances. Like Tazawa in a non-closing role, Uehara may still have some fleeting appeal for his peripherals in the deeper AL-only formats or as a handcuff to Kimbrel.
