Boston Red Sox SPs Jon Lester, John Lackey and Clay Buchholz will not pitch until their second turn in the spring training rotation because of the appearances they made during the playoffs. RPs Koji Uehara, Junichi Tazawa, Craig Breslow and Edward Mujica will also be used cautiously during spring training.

The Boston Red Sox plan on using RP Koji Uehara for more than just three-out saves in the playoffs, according to manager John Farrell. "We're certainly willing to go more than a three-out save," Farrell said. "Hell, there might be a six-out save at some point. Going forward, yeah, we've done it before. Hopefully we're in positions with a lead in the eighth inning where we'll turn to him again." Uehara hasn't given up a home run since June 30 and has allowed only an earned run on 12 hits, two walks and 52 strikeouts in his final 40 1/3 innings.

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara has a $4.25 million vesting option in his contract for next season that will vest if he makes one more appearance this year, according to a league source. Uehara is at 54 appearances this season. He has 12 saves and a 1.35 ERA with 74 strikeouts and just nine walks in 53 1/3 innings. He hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 18 outings.
Fantasy Tip: Uehara has been a pleasant surprise for his fantasy owners this season. If he finishes out the season strong, there's a chance that he could be in consideration to open next year as the team's closer.

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey (shoulder) will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday, July 24, to fix a torn capsule, damage to his labrum and a strain of one of the muscles of his rotator cuff. The estimated recovery time is 12 months.
Fantasy Tip: Bailey's injury woes continue to affect his fantasy value. Koji Uehara doesn't really have anyone challenging him for save chances anytime soon, unless the BoSox go out and acquire another bullpen contributor before the trade deadline. Junichi Tazawa and Matt Thornton become even more important in setup roles now.

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey believes he's ready to resume closing, at least in part because of the rediscovery of his cut fastball. He threw the pitch often while with the Oakland Athletics to offset his four-seam fastball, but over time, the pitch morphed into more of an ineffective slider. Pitching coach Juan Nieves and bullpen coach Dana LeVangie worked with him to change the grip of the pitch so that it acts more like a cutter again.
Fantasy Tip: Bailey's recent results suggest that the BoSox are onto something here. The right-hander represents a good long-term bet for saves in Boston because he seems to be the pitcher they want to use in the ninth, as long as he's right. Koji Uehara should remain a valuable fantasy reliever as a fallback plan, but his days as closer, for now, are numbered.

Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey was an option to close on Sunday, July 7, manager John Farrell said. Bailey is the first reliever Farrell mentioned when asked who would be available to fill in for RP Koji Uehara, whom Farrell wanted to avoid using in that contest if possible. Farrell elaborated, saying that he'd like to get the game to RP Junichi Tazawa and Bailey late. Bailey recorded more than three outs in a game this season for the first time on Saturday, July 6, and he's improving. When asked if he'd like to see Uehara back in a setup role, Farrell responded, "Koji in the eighth or the ninth, depending on who else is available to close out games."
Fantasy Tip: The story also points out that Farrell stated Bailey's return to dominance would allow everyone to slide back into their normal roles. It's becoming kind of clear that the skipper wants to see Bailey back in the ninth, so fantasy owners should tuck him away where available.
