Red Sox | Koji Uehara likely to start on DL

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 08:59:00 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) felt more pain in his left hamstring after throwing 30 pitches in a bullpen session Monday, March 30, and he's likely to start the season on the 15-day disabled list, according to manager John Farrell. Farrell said he's unsure if the team will keep seven or eight men in the bullpen, and he's unsure if RP Edward Mujica will assume the closing role to open up the year.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara, who turns 40 this Friday, has dealt with hamstring problems in the past, too. Age and injury concerns already made Uehara a shaky saves contributor this spring. Mujica is the favorite to see most of the save chances in Uehara's absence. Target him first in your fantasy leagues if he's still on the waiver wire. Junichi Tazawa isn't a bad consolation prize, and his skills are more intriguing.

Red Sox | Edward Mujica could close

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 07:22:31 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Edward Mujica could begin the season as the team's closer, with RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) considered unlikely for opening day. Manager John Farrell also said using matchups could also be an option for the team in the ninth inning.

Fantasy Tip: Mujica has 49 career saves, with a career-high 37 in 2013 while with the St. Louis Cardinals. If Mujica is handed the Red Sox's closer job to begin the season he'll be an excellent player to target in the late rounds of fantasy drafts. Mujica is worth a flier with a near 40-year-old Uehara facing several injury concerns, but Junichi Tazawa will figure in as well.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara unlikely for OD

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 07:18:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) was downgraded to unlikely for opening day, Sunday, March 29, by manager John Farrell.

Fantasy Tip: Already hampered by injury, the almost 40-year-old Uehara enters the 2015 fantasy season with considerable risk. Uehara's performance has remained relatively stable as an elite-level reliever, but the injury concerns are piling up. RP Edward Mujica appears likely to begin the season as the Red Sox closer, and can be had in the late rounds of drafts, or for a very-low cost on FantasyScore to begin the season.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara throws Thursday

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 13:25:54 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) made 60 throws on flat ground Thursday, March 26, which manager John Farrell called "a sizeable step forward." Uehara will throw a bullpen session Saturday, March 28, and might appear in a spring game Monday, March 30.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara is in danger of not being ready for opening day, especially if he has any further setbacks with his hamstring. If you're keeping track at home, Edward Mujica is likely next in line for saves if Uehara isn't ready, but Junichi Tazawa has the more intriguing skills in the late innings. If you're scrounging for saves to start the year, both are worth owning.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara running out of time

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 10:10:34 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) is unsure when he'll throw from a mound again, so the team is preparing as if they won't have him on opening day. Manager John Farrell said there is "growing concern" that he won't be ready on April 6. There is also concern that Uehara's hamstring injury will linger on after he returns to pitching. Boston is hoping he can throw off flat ground in the coming days and then a bullpen by the end of the weekend. Uehara has only pitched in three spring games and hasn't appeared since March 14. Batters were hitting .467 against him and his ERA was 6.00.

Fantasy Tip: At age 40, it's scary to think that Uehara could be breaking down. If you choose to select him as a fantasy baseball closer, make sure you handcuff him with Junichi Tazawa. Tazawa and Edward Mujica could both be candidates for saves if Uehara opens on the disabled list, but Tazawa is the much more attractive fantasy asset.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara does some drills

Sun, 22 Mar 2015 09:46:43 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) participated in some agility testing on his hamstring Sunday, March 22. Uehara also play long toss and appeared to be fine.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara looks to be on track for the start of the regular season and will open as the closer for the Red Sox. Uehara should be an option in the middle rounds of drafts, because he should have consistent opportunities to pick up some saves.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara hoping to long toss Friday

Thu, 19 Mar 2015 16:08:20 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) is still out with a left hamstring strain, but he hopes to start a long toss program Friday, March 20. The Red Sox are still hopeful Uehara will be ready for opening day.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara has a long road ahead of him to be ready for opening day, but he remains a mid-tier closer option, as the injury doesn't appear to be serious. In his absence, expect Edward Mujica to receive the first look at closing duty, if needed.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara tinkering with cutter

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 09:42:44 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara relies heavily on a split-fingered fastball, but he's been tinkering with a cutter this spring.

Fantasy Tip: A new pitch for Uehara could make him even more nasty in the ninth inning as Boston's closer. However, he's in danger of not being ready on opening day because of a hamstring strain. Edward Mujica might be next up for the ninth-inning job if that's the case, and Junichi Tazawa may also factor in. Stay tuned.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara questionable for OD?

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 09:42:10 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) said he might have a tough time being ready for the season opener this year after straining his left hamstring. The left hamstring strain that kept him out for two months in 2010 is similar to the one he has right now, he acknowledged. However, he's still hoping to be healthy for opening day. Uehara plans to throw on flat ground in a few days, but he won't be back on a mound until "he can tolerate the stress," according to manager John Farrell. Uehara also said he might be able to pitch during the regular season even if he doesn't get on a mound again in spring training.

Fantasy Tip: This news will definitely affect Uehara's fantasy value as a midrange closer. Keep a close eye on his progress in the next few weeks. If you decide to draft him, make sure you have some relief insurance in case he starts on the disabled list. Edward Mujica and Junichi Tazawa could both fill in in the ninth in Uehara's absence, and Tazawa is likely the more intriguing fantasy option.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara to miss a few days

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 14:27:38 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara (hamstring) will miss at least a few days after straining his left hamstring Tuesday, March 17, according to manager John Farrell. Farrell said the team still expects Uehara to be ready for Opening Day, but this injury could be a problem. Uehara missed 28 games in March 2010 and was said the have a "chronic hamstring problem." Next in line to close would be RP Edward Mujica.

Fantasy Tip: Uehara is about to be 40 years old when the 2015 season starts, and injuries have been a part of his past. When healthy, he's proven to be a more than effective fantasy closer, but the injury risk has become part of his price now as a midrange closing option. Junichi Tazawa could also be mixed in in the ninth if Uehara misses any time during the regular season. Neither Mujica nor Tazawa should be drafted in standard 12-team mixed leagues, though.
