Astros | Luis Valbuena, Jon Singleton to have big roles

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 16:31:05 -0800

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena will play every day next year either at third base or first base, according to general manager Jeff Luhnow. Luhnow also said first base was 1B Jon Singleton's position to lose.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena was all or nothing in 2015, hitting just .224 but slugging 25 home runs in 434 at-bats. He's not guaranteed 20-plus homers again in Houston, and he's best utilized for his power in deeper mixed leagues. Singleton has yet to hit above .200 in his two limited seasons in the bigs, but he still has plenty of upside, mainly with his power. He's worth a low-cost investment in deeper leagues at the tail end of drafts.

Astros | Jed Lowrie remains out

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 16:22:44 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Jed Lowrie (quadriceps) remains out of the lineup Friday, Oct. 2. 3B Luis Valbuena is starting at the hot corner and is hitting fifth against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Rubby De La Rosa.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) has 24 home runs on the year but is batting just .219. Against right-handers he has 19 of his 24 bombs, and he hit .293 (12-for-41) with two homers and six RBI last month. He's definitely not a bad dice roll by any means, especially with De La Rosa allowing 1.5 homers per nine innings this season.

Astros | Jed Lowrie not playing

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 16:11:20 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Jed Lowrie (quadriceps) is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Sept. 30. 3B Luis Valbuena is starting at the hot corner and is batting seventh against Seattle Mariners SP Tony Zych.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) could be worth the dice roll tonight on FantasyScore against a pitcher making his first career start. Valbuena doesn't make a ton of contact but has a surprising 23 home runs on the year.

Astros | Lefties sitting for Houston

Sat, 26 Sep 2015 08:33:29 -0700

Houston Astros OF Colby Rasmus and 3B Luis Valbuena are not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland Saturday, Sept. 26. 1B Marwin Gonzalez will start in left field and is batting sixth in the lineup, while 1B Chris Carter will start at first base and is batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Rasmus ($4,100, 8.2% of cap) and Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) probably will return to the lineup soon. Gonzalez ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) and Carter ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) have posted solid batting averages during September but neither has posted big home run or RBI totals.

Astros | Chris Carter at 1B Tuesday

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 14:34:05 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter is starting at first base and hitting seventh against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Hector Santiago Tuesday, Sept. 22. 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Carter ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) won't be on many FantasyScore gamer's radars with his poor average against left-handers (.195 in 149 at-bats). However, he has world-class power with 19 home runs on the year and is one swing away from doing damage as a sleeper pick.

Astros | Chris Carter in against Texas

Tue, 15 Sep 2015 14:04:24 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Chris Carter is starting at first base and is batting sixth against Texas Rangers SP Derek Holland Tuesday, Sept. 15. 3B Luis Valbuena is out of the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: It's only Carter's ($3,100, 6.2% of cap) first start since Sept. 7. It's been a very disappointing year for him despite 18 total home runs. He's hitting a meager .181 (63-for-348) and has found himself in a bench role. Carter is a lotto ticket tonight on FantasyScore, but hitting in Texas is attractive.

Astros | Evan Gattis resting Friday

Fri, 11 Sep 2015 16:41:05 -0700

Houston Astros C Evan Gattis is not in the starting lineup Friday, Sept. 11. 3B Luis Valbuena is serving as the designated hitter and is batting seventh against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Jered Weaver.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) is a true lotto ticket every time you take him on FantasyScore. He has 22 long balls on the year but is hitting only .210 (83-for-395) with 97 strikeouts. It's encouraging that 17 of his home runs have come off right-handers, though, if you're feeling bold tonight.

Astros | Marwin Gonzalez starting vs. Athletics

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 16:07:38 -0700

Houston Astros SS Marwin Gonzalez is starting at first base and batting eighth against Oakland Athletics SP Aaron Brooks Wednesday, Sept. 9. 1B Chris Carter and 3B Luis Valbuena are not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Houston to ride the hot hand at first base down the stretch, which is a negative for Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) and Carter ($3,500, 7.0% of cap). Gonzalez ($2,800, 5.6% of cap) has seen the most playing time of the three of late, and he is a nice FantasyScore target Wednesday. Over his past 21 games, Gonzalez owns a .324/.351/.459 slash line.

Astros | Luis Valbuena on the bench

Mon, 07 Sep 2015 11:46:40 -0700

Houston Astros 1B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Felix Doubront Monday, Sept. 7. 1B Chris Carter will start at first base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) struggles against left-handed pitchers, so he is receiving the day off. Carter ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) has four hits on his last nine games and is not best option for owners on FantasyScore.

Astros | Luis Valbuena out of Saturday lineup

Sat, 05 Sep 2015 15:37:12 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not starting Saturday, Sept. 5, against the Minnesota Twins. 3B Jed Lowrie is hitting fifth against Twins SP Ervin Santana.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) has really cooled off as of late, and his .083 mark in the last seven days and .102 mark against Santana are big red flags. Leave him on your bench. Lowrie ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) is hitting .444 in the last seven days, which is a robust average, but play him at your own risk if you need help because he has a .200 average against Santana.
