Cubs | Luis Valbuena available

Mon, 13 May 2013 16:15:35 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Luis Valbuena (finger) is available to pinch hit Monday, May 13, after spraining the little finger on his right hand while sliding Saturday, May 11. Valbuena will get at least one more day of rest Tuesday, May 14, with the team facing a left-handed pitcher.

Fantasy Tip: Cody Ransom has been playing in Valbuena's absence, and the two third baseman have been locked in a platoon at the hot corner. They're both useful in deep NL-only leagues.

Cubs | Luis Valbuena day-to-day

Sat, 11 May 2013 17:09:20 -0700

Updating a previous report, Chicago Cubs 3B Luis Valbuena (pinkie) is considered day-to-day after X-rays on his pinkie came back negative.

Fantasy Tip: It does not appear like Valbuena will be going on the disabled list at this point but there is a chance he could miss some games because of the injury.

Cubs | Luis Valbuena leaves game

Sat, 11 May 2013 16:51:27 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Luis Valbuena (pinkie) left the team's game Saturday, May 11, after suffering a jammed pinkie finger. He was scheduled to undergo X-rays after leaving the game.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena has been a solid hitter for the Cubs this season with five home runs and 13 RBIs. The extent of the injury is not known at this point, and owners should monitor the situation over the next few days.

Cubs | Ian Stewart activated, optioned

Fri, 03 May 2013 11:42:50 -0700

The Chicago Cubs activated 3B Ian Stewart (quadriceps) from the 15-day disabled list Friday, May 3, and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart wasn't swinging the stick well during his rehab assignment, and he'll need to prove to the club he's ready for a call-up. Plus, the platoon at third base between Luis Valbuena and Cody Ransom has been effective. When Stewart does return, take notice in deep mixed leagues if you need the power potential at corner infield.

Cubs | Hot bats at hot corner

Thu, 02 May 2013 10:43:52 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3Bs Luis Valbuena (five) and Cody Ransom (three) have combined for seven home runs in 27 games while playing the third base position this season. Last year, Cubs third basemen combined for 12 round-trippers.

Fantasy Tip: Power production isn't unprecedented for Valbuena -- he hit 17 home runs at the Triple-A level in 2011 and has posted .400-plus rates of slugging regularly -- but his pace is still surprising and unlikely to continue. Ian Stewart (quadriceps) appears to be nowhere near contributing to this effort thanks to his struggles on the farm.

Cubs | Ian Stewart rehabs

Wed, 24 Apr 2013 11:01:46 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Ian Stewart (quadriceps) went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in a rehab game with Triple-A Iowa Tuesday, April 23, and he's only 2-for-24 with a double and three RBIs in seven rehab games.

Fantasy Tip: Cody Ransom and Luis Valbuena have been seeing time at third base in the absence of Stewart. It's unclear when Stewart will return from the DL, but expect Ransom to be sent out when that happens. Although both hit from the left side, Stewart and Valbuena could form a platoon at the hot corner. Stewart has more power, but you have to wonder if his injuries will continue to take a toll on his home run swing. He's worth owning in deep mixed leagues, though.

Cubs | Ian Stewart to start on DL

Tue, 19 Mar 2013 13:19:07 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Ian Stewart's (quadriceps) MRI exam showed fluid in his left quadriceps Tuesday, March 19, and he'll open the season on the disabled list. Stewart is still experiencing pain in his muscle. 3B Luis Valbuena and INF Brent Lillibridge may form some sort of a platoon at third base to open the season. INFs Edwin Maysonet and Alberto Gonzalez are fighting for a utility spot on the roster.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart hasn't been able to avoid nagging injuries for most of his career. Valbuena should be seen as the front-runner for the majority of PT at the hot corner, especially with the way he's played this spring. Josh Vitters (quadriceps) is dealing with injuries, too, and he might be ticketed for the minors.

Cubs | Luis Valbuena an option to hit leadoff

Wed, 27 Feb 2013 15:36:21 -0800

Chicago Cubs 3B Luis Valbuena could be a candidate to hit leadoff this season if OF David DeJesus falters. "(He's a possibility) because he gives you great at-bats, he sees a lot of pitches, he can score first with a home run once in a while, he drives the ball," manager Dale Sveum said of Valbuena. "He's got all the things you want in a leadoff hitter."

Cubs | 3B Ian Stewart's job to win

Fri, 22 Feb 2013 15:36:07 -0800

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum reiterated that third base is 3B Ian Stewart's (quadriceps) job to win this year, not to lose. However, INF Luis Valbuena, who hit a two-run home run in the intrasquad game Friday, Feb. 22, could create some valid competition, depending on how much time Stewart misses due to injury. "The guy had good winter ball, and obviously put a good swing on a ball today," Sveum said about Valbuena. "I'm not too concerned about Valbuena. I need to see him everywhere. If things work out that way, then yeah, he'll be playing third base quite a bit. First half of spring you'll see him a lot more at other positions."
