Cubs | Platoon situation at 3B continues

Tue, 13 May 2014 16:14:56 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Rick Renteria said he will continue to mix and match 3Bs Luis Valbuena and Mike Olt at third base, with Olt facing more left-handers. Olt leads all National League rookies with eight home runs, but he's hitting only .187 and has 32 strikeouts in 91 at-bats. Renteria said there will be a day when Olt receives more regular playing time, though.

Fantasy Tip: Olt is a nice source of power, but his inconsistent playing time and low batting average hurts too much in mixed leagues. For now, consider Olt a nice power product in NL-only leagues.

Cubs | Luis Valbuena could be used at leadoff

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 12:32:04 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Luis Valbuena is another candidate to hit in the leadoff spot this year after he set the tone with a long at-bat in the leadoff spot Tuesday, April 22. "His on-base percentage has been extremely high, especially against right-handed pitching," manager Rick Renteria said of Valbuena, who has a .420 on-base percentage against right-handed pitchers. "Yesterday, I think he set the tone. He fouled off a lot of pitches and got on base." 2B Emilio Bonifacio and OF Junior Lake have also been used at leadoff.

Cubs | Mike Olt, Ryan Kalish make roster

Thu, 27 Mar 2014 11:23:57 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Mike Olt has made the team's opening day roster, as has OF Ryan Kalish. "Making sure he can play third base, that was really the key once it was clear his bat was ready," general manager Jed Hoyer said. "Over the past two weeks it was pretty clear if he was able to play third base we wanted the bat at Wrigley Field." Heading into the game Thursday, March 27, Olt was hitting .275 with five home runs and 12 RBIs this spring. Manager Rick Renteria isn't committing to Olt playing every day at the hot corner, though, with 3B Luis Valbuena still in the picture.

Fantasy Tip: Olt has impressive power, but his prospect allure wore off last season with Texas when he developed serious vision problems that affected his statistics. He's flying under the radar now, and even though he may split time with Valbuena, he could become valuable in mixed leagues.

Cubs | Mike Olt brings the thunder

Thu, 13 Mar 2014 06:23:49 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Mike Olt had three hits, including two homers, with three RBI Wednesday, March 12. The vision problems he was having last year have cleared up. He's hitting .333 this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Olt is a not-so-dark horse to earn frequent, if not full-time, at-bats at third base for the Cubbies. Luis Valbuena is the platoon majority option. Emilio Bonifacio may get time there versus southpaws. Super-prospect Kris Bryant may make his way there late in the season. But the formerly touted Texas Rangers tyke could deliver post-hype power for fantasy prospectors now that he can actually see pitches.

Cubs | Expecting production from Jake Arrieta, Mike Olt

Thu, 23 Jan 2014 11:03:10 -0800

The Chicago Cubs are expecting to get plenty of production from SP Jake Arrieta and 3B Mike Olt after trading for them last year. Manager Rick Renteria said the initial plan at third base is to have 3Bs Luis Valbuena and Donnie Murphy compete for playing time, but the Cubs are hoping to see Olt bounce back from a rough year with the Texas Rangers in 2013. Arrieta said he benefitted from working with pitching coach Chris Bosio for the final seven weeks of the season. The team didn't notice any vision problems from Olt when he was hitting off a tee during the team's developmental program last week.

Cubs | Luis Valbuena, Ryan Sweeney rehab updates

Wed, 28 Aug 2013 09:23:16 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Luis Valbuena (oblique) was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in his first rehab game with the rookie level AZL Cubs. OF Ryan Sweeney (rib) went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in his third rehab game with the affiliate.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena may have to cede ABs to Donnie Murphy when he returns, but he's on the good side of a platoon and figures to stay that way once Murphy cools off, as expected. Sweeney may not have any place to play unless the Cubbies deal Nate Schierholtz via waivers.
