Astros | Luis Valbuena batting fourth

Sun, 26 Jul 2015 08:56:48 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is starting at third base and batting fourth against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura Sunday, July 26.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) has been the prototypical feast-or-famine hitter this season with 19 home runs and a .201/.284/.421 slash line. He hasn't hit a home run since his two-bomb outburst Tuesday, June 23, though, and is just 14-for-63 during the span. He is a risky FantasyScore play with upside Sunday.

Astros | Marwin Gonzalez batting second

Thu, 23 Jul 2015 13:38:05 -0700

Houston Astros SS Marwin Gonzalez is starting at third base and batting second against Boston Red Sox SP Wade Miley Thursday, July 23. 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) boasts a respectable .297/.342/.446 slash line against lefties this season, so with his lineup position, he stands as a potential low-priced option for FantasyScore contests Thursday. Keep your expectations in check, though.

Astros | No Luis Valbuena Friday

Fri, 17 Jul 2015 14:56:35 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup Friday, July 17. SS Marwin Gonzalez is starting at the hot corner and hitting second against Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) typically isn't very attractive to FantasyScore users, but tonight could be an exception as a sleeper pick that'll give you valuable cap relief. Perez is making his first start of the season for the Rangers, and Gonzalez is hitting much better against southpaws (.279) this season.

Astros | Luis Valbuena could move across diamond

Wed, 15 Jul 2015 17:08:39 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena has taken ground balls at first base recently and could be moved across the diamond to first base when SS Jed Lowrie (thumb) returns from injury. 1B Chris Carter hasn't gotten going in the first half and 1B Jon Singleton hasn't replicated his success in the minors to the major leagues.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) has 19 home runs and is an excellent source of power for home run-starved fantasy teams, but he's hitting just .199 (57-for-286) on the season. A move across the diamond could help him add dual-position eligibility, though, which would make him a little more attractive to owners. Don't forget about Lowrie ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) in deep mixed and AL-only leagues as he nears a return.

Astros | Luis Valbuena out of the lineup

Sun, 12 Jul 2015 08:43:40 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup Sunday, July 12. SS Marwin Gonzalez is playing third base and batting second against Tampa Bay Rays SP Matt Moore Sunday.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) is an upside source of cap relief hitting between Houston's top two hitters. He is worth a dice roll at FantasyScore, although far from a sure thing. Make sure to avoid Valbuena in all fantasy formats Sunday.

Astros | Luis Valbuena returns to the lineup

Thu, 09 Jul 2015 13:00:42 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena (toe) is starting at third base and batting fourth against Cleveland Indians SP Cody Anderson Thursday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) missed three games with the injury. Regardless of whether he is 100% healthy, Valbuena has been a high-risk, high-reward play all season. He has 19 home runs but just a .203 batting average and a .286 on-base percentage. FantasyScore players who prefer consistency should look elsewhere.

Astros | Luis Valbuena could play Thursday

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 17:08:56 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena (toe) completed a full day of baseball activity Wednesday, July 8, and could return to the starting lineup for the series finale against the Cleveland Indians Thursday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: If you don't mind the low batting average, Valbuena ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) has been an inexpensive power source at third base for FantasyScore owners. If he is unable to start Thursday, INF Marwin Gonzalez ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) would likely get the starting nod at the hot corner.

Astros | Luis Valbuena remains sidelined

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 14:38:42 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena (toe) remains out of the lineup Wednesday, July 8. SS Marwin Gonzalez is starting at third base again and is hitting seventh against Cleveland Indians SP Trevor Bauer.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has a limited ceiling offensively and isn't very attractive near the bottom of the batting order for Houston. He remains a low-end shortstop play on FantasyScore that will give you salary cap relief, if needed.

Astros | Luis Valbuena on the mend

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 18:06:13 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena (toe) has improved, according to manager A.J. Hinch, but he had another non-activity day Tuesday, July 7. "We're hoping that a couple of days rest will do wonders for him," Hinch said. "I know it's not as sensitive to the touch as it was yesterday, which is a good sign."

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($4,000; or 8.0% of cap) has been a solid mid-level source of power for FantasyScore owners, but wait to see him officially play a full game without any lingering effects of his injury before trusting him again. Marwin Gonzalez ($2,200; or 4.4% of cap) started at the hot corner Tuesday in Cleveland for Valbuena.

Astros | Luis Valbuena out Tuesday

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 13:08:14 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena (toe) is not playing Tuesday, July 7, against the Cleveland Indians. SS Marwin Gonzalez gets the start.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is out of the lineup for the second day due to a toe injury, so you should disable him for the time being. It may take him a few games to get the rhythm back once he is ready. Gonzalez ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) has a small sample size of three hits in five at-bats against Indians starter Corey Kluber, so he may be worth the look.
