Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Rich Hill Sunday, May 1. SS Marwin Gonzalez will start at third base and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez is hitting only .222 so far this season and probably can be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 11:02:44 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena and C Jason Castro are back in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Jesse Hahn Saturday, April 30, batting eighth and ninth, respectively.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena is batting .193 with four RBI through 66 at-bats, while Castro is hitting just .128 with two RBI in 47 at-bats. Neither player should be viewed as a viable fantasy option.

Astros | Luis Valbuena, Jason Castro out

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 16:17:10 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena and C Jason Castro are not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Sean Manaea Friday, April 29. SS Marwin Gonzalez will start at third base and is batting eighth, while C Erik Kratz will start at catcher and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez has gone 4-for-15 with one home run and one RBI over the last seven days and is not a strong option in most leagues. Kratz is hitting only .069 this season and should be avoided in all leagues.

Astros | Marwin Gonzalez draws into the lineup

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 14:41:30 -0700

Houston Astros SS Marwin Gonzalez is playing third base and batting eighth against Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels Wednesday, April 20. Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez posted a .295/.347/.496 slash line against left-handed pitchers last season, and he projects to see regular at-bats against southpaws. Expect Valbuena to be the odd-man out most nights against lefties, which hurts his fantasy value. Similarly, Gonzalez's fantasy ceiling isn't high enough to warrant a roster spot in the majority of seasonal leagues.

Astros | Luis Valbuena, Colby Rasmus out

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 14:31:33 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena and OF Colby Rasmus are not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers left-handed SP Derek Holland Tuesday, April 19. 3B Marwin Gonzalez is starting at third base and hitting seventh, while OF Jake Marisnick sees the start in left field and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez had a nice spring but has only four hits in 19 at-bats to start the season. Still, he could be a successful sleeper option against a southpaw tonight. Marisnick's biggest asset is his speed, but he's unlikely to be able to use it much hitting ninth in the order.

Astros | Marwin Gonzalez draws into lineup

Thu, 14 Apr 2016 13:39:12 -0700

Houston Astros SS Marwin Gonzalez is starting at third base and batting eighth against Kansas City Royals SP Ian Kennedy Thursday, April 14. 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez is off to a 1-for-11 start to the season, and his .700 OPS against right-handed hurlers dating back to 2014 shouldn't instill enough confidence to start him confidently in daily contests Thursday. Make sure to avoid Valbuena in all fantasy formats Thursday, too.

Astros | Luis Valbuena sitting out

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 10:07:39 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena is not in the starting lineup against Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson Sunday, April 10. SS Marwin Gonzalez will start at third base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez probably will receive playing time at multiple positions this season but is probably an AL-only player at this point since he does not have strong offensive stats.

Astros | Luis Valbuena, Jon Singleton to have big roles

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 16:31:05 -0800

Houston Astros 3B Luis Valbuena will play every day next year either at third base or first base, according to general manager Jeff Luhnow. Luhnow also said first base was 1B Jon Singleton's position to lose.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena was all or nothing in 2015, hitting just .224 but slugging 25 home runs in 434 at-bats. He's not guaranteed 20-plus homers again in Houston, and he's best utilized for his power in deeper mixed leagues. Singleton has yet to hit above .200 in his two limited seasons in the bigs, but he still has plenty of upside, mainly with his power. He's worth a low-cost investment in deeper leagues at the tail end of drafts.

Astros | Jed Lowrie remains out

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 16:22:44 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Jed Lowrie (quadriceps) remains out of the lineup Friday, Oct. 2. 3B Luis Valbuena is starting at the hot corner and is hitting fifth against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Rubby De La Rosa.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) has 24 home runs on the year but is batting just .219. Against right-handers he has 19 of his 24 bombs, and he hit .293 (12-for-41) with two homers and six RBI last month. He's definitely not a bad dice roll by any means, especially with De La Rosa allowing 1.5 homers per nine innings this season.

Astros | Jed Lowrie not playing

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 16:11:20 -0700

Houston Astros 3B Jed Lowrie (quadriceps) is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, Sept. 30. 3B Luis Valbuena is starting at the hot corner and is batting seventh against Seattle Mariners SP Tony Zych.

Fantasy Tip: Valbuena ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) could be worth the dice roll tonight on FantasyScore against a pitcher making his first career start. Valbuena doesn't make a ton of contact but has a surprising 23 home runs on the year.
