Royals | Kris Medlen mauled by Nationals

Wed, 04 May 2016 15:49:14 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen did not fare well in his start Wednesday, May 4, opposite the Washington Nationals. He lasted only two innings, getting pounded for nine runs (six earned) on six hits and one walk. He also collected two strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Medlen was coming off one of his best outings as a Royal before today's disaster, although in his defense, he never really had a chance, with his upper echelon defense behind him uncharacteristically committing three errors in the first inning. The former Atlanta Brave now has an ugly 6.85 ERA, and while he's allowed two runs or less in three of his five starts overall, he hasn't been doing it in pretty fashion, as he also has a high WHIP. He's only suited for the deepest leagues right now.

Royals | Kris Medlen shelled in loss

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 19:41:54 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen allowed seven runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out two in 3 2/3 innings in a loss to the Baltimore Orioles Saturday, April 23.

Fantasy Tip: Medlen opened the year with two solid outings, but control issues finally caught up to him. He can be left on waivers.

Royals | Kris Medlen named fifth starter

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 11:18:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen has won the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation, although manager Ned Yost said he may have his turn skipped the first time around. SPs Edinson Volquez, Ian Kennedy, Yordano Ventura and Chris Young are the club's first four starters.

Fantasy Tip: SPs Chien-Ming Wang, Danny Duffy and Dillon Gee were among Medlen's chief competition for the job throughout spring training camp. Medlen went 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA in four Cactus League starts but had 15 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander can be ignored outside of AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Royals | Kris Medlen serves up 4 homers

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 17:02:13 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen was lit up for four home runs Wednesday, March 23, versus the Cleveland Indians. Overall, he lasted just 3 1/3 innings, yielding five runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking one. He now has a 6.57 ERA this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Well, the strikeouts were encouraging, but that's the only positive takeaway you can find in an outing like this one. Fortunately for Medlen, his job security in the rotation isn't really in jeopardy, unless the Royals were to decide to reinsert Danny Duffy back onto the staff, but it doesn't look like that's happening. Medlen has some potential after registering a 4.01 ERA in eight starts and seven relief appearances a year ago, but he shouldn't be a fantasy option in the beginning of the season outside of deep leagues and AL-only formats.

Royals | Two spots in KC rotation up for grabs

Sun, 31 Jan 2016 08:10:39 -0800

Kansas City Royals SPs Kris Medlen, Chris R. Young, Danny Duffy and Dillon Gee are expected to compete for the final two spots in the starting rotation during spring training, according to manager Ned Yost and pitching coach Dave Eiland.

Fantasy Tip: Yost hinted that SPs Ian Kennedy, Yordano Ventura and Edinson Volquez would likely be the first three starters in the rotation, although he is hesitant to name an Opening Day starter. Owners in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues should keep tabs on this competition throughout spring training and the winners are worthy of consideration as late-round fliers in this year's fantasy drafts.

Royals | Kris Medlen strong in September

Sat, 26 Sep 2015 01:22:23 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen is 10-2 with a 1.99 ERA in 25 career September appearances. Medlen starts Saturday, Sept. 26, against the Cleveland Indians.

Fantasy Tip: Medlen ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) could continue doing well in a Royals uniform, and all indications are there won't be any signs of slowing down. With Medlen as solid as he has been lately, he is worth a start in FantasyScore.

Royals | Kris Medlen starting Monday vs. Orioles

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 15:04:14 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen will starting against the Baltimore Orioles Monday, Aug. 24.

Fantasy Tip: It is expected to take two or three starts for Medlen to stretch out to 90-100 pitches, so his fantasy value will be limited initially. He is still worth a flier in deep seasonal leagues, though. With that said, don't expect Medlen to return numbers close to his run from 2010 through 2013 where he posted a 2.75 ERA and 362 strikeouts through 445 innings over 57 starts and 14 relief appearances. Still, it is a sign of what he is capable of.

Royals | Manager talks Kris Medlen starting

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 15:01:36 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen is likely to make a start before the end of the season, according to manager Ned Yost.

Fantasy Tip: Medlen has pitched 10 1/3 innings of relief this season, but he has shined as a starter in the past. Medlen could be worth stashing in cavernous mixed and AL-only formats, but there is no telling when he'll join the rotation, or if it'll even happen.

Royals | Kris Medlen to return Monday

Sun, 19 Jul 2015 13:10:55 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Kansas City Royals are expected to activate P Kris Medlen (elbow) from the disabled list Monday, July 20. Manager Ned Yost said he will be used as a long reliever, although he envisions him eventually moving back into a starting role.

Fantasy Tip: Medlen is worth monitoring in most fantasy baseball formats, although he won't have any FantasyScore value as long as he's pitching in long relief.
