Royals | Kris Medlen has rotator cuff injury

Fri, 13 May 2016 09:07:17 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen (shoulder) is dealing with right rotator cuff inflammation. His 15-day disabled list stint is retroactive to Wednesday, May 11. Manager Ned Yost said both Medlen and SP Chris R. Young (forearm) should be able to return when they're eligible to come off the DL. SPs Dillon Gee and Danny Duffy will serve as fill-in starters in the meantime. Gee will throw against the Atlanta Braves Saturday, May 14, and Duffy will go Sunday, May 15. Duffy will begin on a 50-pitch limit.

Fantasy Tip: Neither Medlen nor Young are guaranteed to return to a rotation spot when they're healthy after really struggling before their injuries. Gee and Duffy aren't long-term solutions and aren't attractive options for the spot starts despite juicy matchups against the Braves. Both Gee and Duffy are unlikely to pitch deep in their starts this weekend. Keep tabs on Kyle Zimmer and Miguel Almonte in the minors, as both young pitchers could become options for the rotation at some point this year.

Royals | Kris Medlen scheduled for MRI

Thu, 12 May 2016 14:02:35 -0700

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen (forearm) will undergo an MRI exam in Kansas City Friday, May 13.

Fantasy Tip: Currently sitting with a 7.77 ERA through his first six starts of the season, Medlen's struggles are likely injury related to a degree, and we'll know more details soon. He is a stash candidate in deep mixed and AL-only formats, but you'll want to see Medlen return to the hill and prove his health with improved results before starting him again.

Royals | Chris Young, Kris Medlen to DL

Thu, 12 May 2016 11:43:27 -0700

Kansas City Royals SPs Chris R. Young (forearm) and Kris Medlen (forearm) were both placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, May 12. Ps Scott Alexander and Peter Moylan are being recalled in corresponding moves.

Fantasy Tip: Both Young and Medlen had really been struggling before their injuries, so they're not worth holding onto outside of AL-only leagues. Alexander and Moylan are relievers, so they don't figure to enter the starting rotation in KC. The more realistic options to enter the rotation are either Danny Duffy or Dillon Gee. One or both could have fleeting short-term value in single-universe leagues. Stay tuned.

Royals | Kris Medlen expected to make next start

Wed, 11 May 2016 14:03:42 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen (forearm) is more than likely to make his next start because RPs Danny Duffy and Brian Flynn are not stretched out enough to replace Medlen in the rotation, manager Ned Yost said Wednesday, May 11.

Fantasy Tip: Medlen is clearly treading water in the starting rotation and currently stands with a 7.77 ERA through his first six starts of the season. Until he turns it around on the hill, Medlen cannot be started with confidence in any fantasy format. He was scheduled for an MRI exam Wednesday, so stay tuned for an update on his status.

Royals | Kris Medlen bounced around

Tue, 10 May 2016 22:42:32 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen allowed four earned runs, six hits and three walks with no strikeouts while recording just six outs in his start Tuesday, May 10, against the New York Yankees.

Fantasy Tip: Medlen took the no-decision, but his ERA ballooned to 7.77 on the season. He is tentatively set to face his former team, the Atlanta Braves, in a start Sunday, so he could turn things around. But it remains to be seen if he'll get the chance, as the Royals could pull the plug on him. Fantasy owners should do the same.

Yankees | Jacoby Ellsbury out again Tuesday

Tue, 10 May 2016 13:29:01 -0700

New York Yankees OF Jacoby Ellsbury (hip) is out for the fourth straight day Tuesday, May 10, due to a hip injury. OF Aaron Hicks will man center field and will bat sixth against Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen.

Fantasy Tip: As mentioned in a previous tip, Ellsbury owners should be used to these injuries by now. His fantasy value has decreased because Ellsbury can't stay healthy. Sideline him in your league because it is looking more and more like the disabled list may be in order. As for Hicks, he is batting .222-2-4 in the past week but is 6-for-44 for the season. That carries no fantasy value for your lineup.

Yankees | Mark Teixeira out of Tuesday lineup

Tue, 10 May 2016 13:09:51 -0700

New York Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira is not starting Tuesday, May 10, against the Kansas City Royals. 2B Dustin Ackley will bat fifth and play at first base against Royals SP Kris Medlen.

Fantasy Tip: According to the New York Post, Teixeira is in a 4-for-37 slide over his past 11 games, with one RBI and no extra-base hits. He isn't the only Yankee to slump badly early in the season, but it sounds like Teixeira is getting a night off just to rest. Needless to say, he shouldn't be in your fantasy lineup while this slump is going on. Ackley is 3-for-16 (.188) in the last week and carries no fantasy value for daily lineups.

Royals | Kris Medlen mauled by Nationals

Wed, 04 May 2016 15:49:14 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen did not fare well in his start Wednesday, May 4, opposite the Washington Nationals. He lasted only two innings, getting pounded for nine runs (six earned) on six hits and one walk. He also collected two strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Medlen was coming off one of his best outings as a Royal before today's disaster, although in his defense, he never really had a chance, with his upper echelon defense behind him uncharacteristically committing three errors in the first inning. The former Atlanta Brave now has an ugly 6.85 ERA, and while he's allowed two runs or less in three of his five starts overall, he hasn't been doing it in pretty fashion, as he also has a high WHIP. He's only suited for the deepest leagues right now.

Royals | Kris Medlen shelled in loss

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 19:41:54 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen allowed seven runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out two in 3 2/3 innings in a loss to the Baltimore Orioles Saturday, April 23.

Fantasy Tip: Medlen opened the year with two solid outings, but control issues finally caught up to him. He can be left on waivers.

Royals | Kris Medlen named fifth starter

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 11:18:52 -0700

Kansas City Royals SP Kris Medlen has won the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation, although manager Ned Yost said he may have his turn skipped the first time around. SPs Edinson Volquez, Ian Kennedy, Yordano Ventura and Chris Young are the club's first four starters.

Fantasy Tip: SPs Chien-Ming Wang, Danny Duffy and Dillon Gee were among Medlen's chief competition for the job throughout spring training camp. Medlen went 1-1 with a 6.57 ERA in four Cactus League starts but had 15 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander can be ignored outside of AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.
