He is expected to miss the entire 2012 season. "One option was shutting down half of the season and start recovering again," he said. "I didn't want to take the chance. The thing is, they told me you can do that but if you start hurting again at the end of the season you have to take the surgery anyway. The best option is take the surgery right now and get ready for the next Spring Training. It's going to be a long year for me doing the rehab." Escalona suffered the injury early in camp while swinging a bat and had only made appearances in two Grapefruit League games because of discomfort.

He is feeling the most pain when he breaks off a curveball or throws his changeup. "We're going to give him a few days until it starts calming down," manager Bradley Mills said. "I don't know exactly (how long), but probably four or five days he'll be shut down, upwards to six days. He needs to start feeling better before he starts throwing and gets his arm strength back up to face hitters."
