The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned 1B Andrew Lambo to Triple-A Indianapolis Tuesday, March 25, meaning 1B Travis Ishikawa will likely make the roster as the backup first baseman. The team also optioned OF Jaff Decker and RP Jared Hughes to Indy. Pittsburgh Pirates 1B/OF Andrew Lambo is 2-for-23 to start spring training, but the club will continue giving him at-bats. "The work he's doing around first base has been good," said manager Clint Hurdle.
Fantasy Tip: The post-hyper is also in competition for RF at-bats. Last year's Pirates Minor League Player of the Year, Lambo has had a career revival in the last few years and has the power to make fantasy noise in deep leagues. Maybe this bad news will make him an even cheaper draft play.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle continues to try and figure out the team's left field and first base positions this spring. 2B Michael Martinez, who is a switch hitter and can play second base and the outfield, is the only one who has distinguished himself in the game Monday, March 11. OFs Andrew Lambo, Jaff Decker, Chris Dickerson, Chris McGuiness and Travis Snider and 1B Travis Ishikawa are all in the mix. "We'll just keep giving them opportunities to play. We'll keep giving them at-bats and see where they take them," said Hurdle, who has begun to divide what he refers to as "separation" among the candidates. "But I'm not gonna seed them for you."

The Pittsburgh Pirates have 1Bs Andrew Lambo, Chris McGuiness and Gaby Sanchez vying for at-bats at first base, and a platoon situation might work there. However, general manager Neal Huntington is likely to continue seeking an upgrade, according to beat writer Rob Biertempfel.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle indicated Friday, Nov. 22, that OF Andrew Lambo could get a shot to start in 2014. Lambo has been working at first base with Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League. The team's biggest holes are at first base and right field, and Lambo could potentially fill needs at both spots. "We need to make sure not to overlook the in-house pop we have," Hurdle said. "Is he ready? There's only one way to find out. He's got an aggressive swing, and a pretty good eye at the plate. His Minor League numbers obviously get your attention, and we'll look for opportunities to maximize that."

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew Lambo and P Tyler Glasnow were named as the team's Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year. Lambo hit .282 with 32 home runs and 99 RBIs in 120 games with Triple-A Indianapolis and Double-A Altoona this year. Glasnow went 9-3 with a 2.18 ERA in 24 starts for Single-A West Virginia.
Fantasy Tip: Lambo is a candidate to platoon in the outfield next year with Jose Tabata, so he's more of an NL-only target in the late rounds. He has good power skills and could become a fixture in the Bucs outfield all season long. Glasnow probably won't make much of a fantasy impact until 2015, at the earliest.
