Reds | J.J. Hoover sent down

Wed, 29 Jun 2016 08:13:41 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP J.J. Hoover was optioned to Class AAA Louisville Wednesday, June 29.

Fantasy Tip: Hoover has been awful all year despite the team essentially handing him the closer role to open the year. He has a 13.50 ERA and allowed 10 runs in his last two outings. He could receive one more shot later in the season if Tony Cingrani falters, but he shouldn't be owned for now.

Cubs | Javier Baez belts first career grand slam

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 21:39:41 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B/SS/OF Javier Baez went hitless in his first six at-bats Tuesday, June 28, but made up for a lousy night at the plate with one swing, jumping on a 1-2 fastball from Cincinnati Reds RP J.J. Hoover in the 15th inning and sending it over the fence in center for his first career grand slam.

Fantasy Tip: The 15th-inning grand slam is the latest such hit by a Cub in team history. Baez hasn't seen the kind of playing time some had hoped this spring and especially after Kyle Schwarber was lost for the season, so he's been a bit of a disappointment despite the fact he can play so many positions. He's still valuable enough to keep on most fantasy rosters but should be riding the bench in most leagues.

Reds | Jose Peraza, J.J. Hoover coming up

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 12:03:11 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 2B Jose Peraza and RP J.J. Hoover were recalled from Class AAA Louisville Tuesday, June 14. In corresponding moves, P Daniel Wright was optioned to Louisville and INF/C Jordan Pacheco (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder tendinitis.

Fantasy Tip: Peraza is a notable Reds second base prospect, but he didn't show well after being called up earlier this year. He'll get another chance, but it remains to be seen how much he'll play. He's worth a pickup in deep mixed and NL-only leagues for his speed, mainly. Hoover entered the year as the favorite to close, but his ghastly numbers (14.34 ERA, 2.34 WHIP, six homers allowed) got him demoted quickly. He's unlikely to pitch in high-leverage situations.

Reds | J.J. Hoover optioned to minors

Sun, 08 May 2016 07:15:51 -0700

The Cincinnati Reds have demoted RP J.J. Hoover to Class AAA Louisville.

Fantasy Tip: Hoover began the 2016 season as the Reds' ninth-inning man but went 0-1 with a 14.34 ERA in 12 appearances. The club is using a closer-by-committee setup for the time being, with Tony Cingrani, Caleb Cotham and Ross Ohlendorf serving as the most likely candidates to receive save opportunities. These pitchers should be rostered in NL-only fantasy formats or by owners who are desperate for saves.

Reds | J.J. Hoover no longer the only closer

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 19:43:50 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP J.J. Hoover allowed four runs on five hits while recording just two outs in an 8-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs Friday, April 22, in his first appearance since he was told by manager Bryan Price that he will no longer be pitching exclusively in the ninth inning.

Fantasy Tip: Hoover's ERA sits at 19.50, and if it weren't for the state of Cincinnati bullpen, he would be out the closer conversation completely. As it stands, he could still find his way to some save chances and is worth hanging on to in deeper mixed and NL-only formats.

Reds | Cincinnati going with closer committee

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 13:02:01 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds RPs Tony Cingrani, J.J. Hoover and Caleb Cotham will be employed in a closer-by-committee approach moving forward, according to manager Bryan Price.

Fantasy Tip: Cingrani likely has the most fantasy appeal at this point because of his strikeout upside. The converted starter owns a career 11.4 K/9 through 52 appearances as a reliever. Cothmam and Hoover should also be owned in the majority of leagues, and especially if you're chasing saves.

Reds | J.J. Hoover likely unavailable

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 07:49:47 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP J.J. Hoover is likely unavailable Wednesday, April 20, and manager Bryan Price said he hasn't made a decision regarding Hoover's closer status.

Fantasy Tip: If the Reds have a save opportunity, Tony Cingrani or Caleb Cotham could figure in. If you're in a league that allows daily pickups/lineup moves and you're desperate for saves, here's a shot in the dark.

Reds | J.J. Hoover on the hot seat

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 04:07:54 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP J.J. Hoover is in danger of losing his closer job after allowing a two-run homer Tuesday, April 19, in what has been a rough start to the season. "I'm going to sleep on it," manager Bryan Price said. "I'll probably have a better answer moving ahead tomorrow."

Fantasy Tip: Hoover has been shaky, blowing one save and allowing two runs to score in his only converted save. The Reds don't have a lockdown option behind him. Lefty Tony Cingrani has been used situationally, Jumbo Diaz was sent down and Ross Ohlendorf has a 9.45 ERA. Then you have Caleb Cotham, who is a relative unknown, but he has tossed eight scoreless innings thus far. The 28-year-old has five K's in those eight innings. Our FAAB money would be on Cotham next up if a switch is made.

Reds | J.J. Hoover bends but doesn't break

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 14:31:27 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP J.J. Hoover allowed two runs on two hits and a walk but closed out a 9-8 victory Saturday, April 16.

Fantasy Tip: He was lit up for four runs in one-third of an inning in his previous outing, and he's sporting an ugly 17.18 ERA early on. Jumbo Diaz and maybe Dan Straily could stand to benefit if his struggles continue.
