Reds | J.J. Hoover blows save

Sat, 05 Apr 2014 14:36:40 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP J.J. Hoover blew the save Saturday, April 5, allowing a grand slam, which all four runs were charged to him, without recording an out.

Fantasy Tip: You could see Logan Ondrusek in the next save chance as they await Jonathan Broxton's (forearm) return. Ondrusek hasn't been unhittable, but he has yet to yield an earned run.

Reds | Closer-by-committee until Jonathan Broxton returns

Wed, 02 Apr 2014 13:50:50 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Reds RPs J.J. Hoover, Logan Ondrusek, Manny Parra and Sam LeCure are all closing possibilities until RP Jonathan Broxton (forearm) returns from the disabled list next week. Manager Bryan Price seems to indicate that Broxton is the favorite to close when he returns. "I'm not to the point where I'm going to designate a guy. We anticipate Broxton being back relatively quickly. We know all of those pitchers I mentioned have a history in this league. If we can match them up as best as possible until we're able to get a guy like Broxton, who's been a closer, back. He'll be the guy who holds down the fort until Aroldis Chapman comes back," Price said.

Fantasy Tip: It's pretty clear that Broxton is the favorite for the primary closing duties when he's healthy, leaving the other options as setup men based on matchups. Grab Broxton now if you are in need of more saves options.

Reds | J.J. Hoover, Sam LeCure working on sliders

Fri, 28 Mar 2014 08:52:35 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RPs J.J. Hoover and Sam LeCure are both working on their sliders this spring. "They're both working on a slider, throwing less conventionally, throwing more breaking pitches when they'd typically use their fastball more," manager Bryan Price said. "Some guys are stepping outside of character to try to develop a little bit more, or develop another pitch before the season starts. I think we'll see something that more resembles their style of pitching once the season starts."

Fantasy Tip: Hoover is expected to see most of the closing opportunities with Aroldis Chapman (head) sidelined. If Hoover is still available in your mixed league and you want some more save opps, jump on him.

Reds | Aroldis Chapman needs 6-8 weeks recovery time

Thu, 20 Mar 2014 09:49:40 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Aroldis Chapman (face) can recover from his facial injuries in six to eight weeks, but it doesn't mean he'll be throwing immediately after that timetable.

Fantasy Tip: Expect Chapman to need somewhere around eight to 10 weeks before he's back throwing and ready to return. This is a big blow to those that took Chapman in the first tier of big-name closers. If you're looking for his replacement, J.J. Hoover is probably the best speculation, but Jonathan Broxton and Sean Marshall could form some sort of platoon.

Reds | Jonathan Broxton was unavailable

Fri, 17 May 2013 13:44:19 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Jonathan Broxton (back) was unavailable to pitch due to a "knot" in his upper back area Thursday, May 16. He'll be ready to pitch Friday, May 17.

Fantasy Tip: This explains why J.J. Hoover came into the game late. However, Hoover has been pitching much better this year and could at least have a partial share of saving opportunities if Aroldis Chapman were to miss time due to injuries.

Reds | Aroldis Chapman roughed up in non-save situation

Fri, 03 May 2013 16:32:29 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Aroldis Chapman allowed four hits and three earned runs while walking two and striking out one in only two-thirds of an inning in a non-save situation against the Chicago Cubs Friday, May 3. He threw 32 pitches in the outing, and RP J.J. Hoover pitched one-third of an inning with a strikeout to record his first save.

Fantasy Tip: Hoover only entered the game because Jonathan Broxton had already been used in the eighth inning. Chapman was likely not allowed to finish the inning because of his high pitch count. It won't be too alarming if Chapman is rested tomorrow night as a result. The outing is disappointing for Chapman's owners, but if it's any consolation, it came in a non-save situation.

Reds | Two closing in on jobs?

Fri, 22 Mar 2013 20:55:27 -0700

Cincinnati Reds P J.J. Hoover has pitched well this spring with 14 strikeouts and just one walk in seven Cactus League appearances, while P Jose Arredondo has pitched well and is out of options. Both players have a good chance at winning bullpen jobs.

Reds | Dusty Baker could play matchups

Wed, 12 Sep 2012 17:06:13 -0700

Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker said he will likely continue to play the matchups in the ninth inning between RPs Jonathan Broxton, Sean Marshall, J.J. Hoover and Jose Arredondo with RP Aroldis Chapman resting for a few days. "(Broxton) is the No. 1 candidate. But it's matchups, too," Baker said. "If they have three lefties, it could be (Sean) Marshall. It could be Broxton, it could be (Jose) Arredondo, it could be (J.J.) Hoover. Broxton is the No. 1 choice. We try to limit Broxton to two days in a row, too."

Reds | Devin Mesoraco optioned

Thu, 23 Aug 2012 13:40:24 -0700

The Cincinnati Reds optioned C Devin Mesoraco to Triple-A Louisville Thursday, Aug. 23, and recalled RP J.J. Hoover from Louisville in a corresponding move. C Dioner Navarro will be the No. 2 catcher until Mesoraco returns. He was hitting only .210 with five home runs and 14 RBIs, but he'll receive regular at-bats in the minors.
