Nationals | Two Nationals regulars sitting

Sat, 14 May 2016 15:12:41 -0700

Washington Nationals OF Jayson Werth and SS Danny Espinosa are out of the lineup Saturday, May 14. OF Matt den Dekker is hitting sixth, and SS Stephen Drew is hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Drew hit a pinch-hit homer yesterday, but he's hitting just .162. He's a bit of a shot in the dark against Kendry Flores in his major league debut. As for den Dekker, he's hitting .188 and doesn't have much power upside. Pass on him today.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa picking it up

Fri, 13 May 2016 16:35:02 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Danny Espinosa is hitting .350 with a home run in his last five games and has three home runs and eight RBI in his last 13 games to raise his average to .210 with a .320 on-base percentage. Manager Dusty Baker said it's up to Espinosa to create job security with SS Trea Turner waiting in the wings in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: It's only a matter of time before Turner comes up and takes over the starting job at shortstop for the Nationals this year. Espinosa is only worth keeping as middle infield insurance in NL-only leagues. Turner has done nothing but impress at Class AAA Syracuse (.310-2-14) with 13 stolen bases. Turner is probably already stashed in most leagues at this point.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa resting Sunday

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 08:48:24 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Danny Espinosa is not in the starting lineup against Minnesota Twins SP Tyler Duffey Sunday, April 24. INF Stephen Drew will play shortstop and bat eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Both Espinosa and Drew have struggled at the plate this season and neither player makes a great option in daily fantasy games at this point.

Nationals | Trea Turner has to wait?

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 15:39:14 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Trea Turner hit .433 with a home run, five RBI, two stolen bases and a .525 on-base percentage last week and was named the International League's Player of the Week. He's gone hitless in his last 10 at-bats but is still hitting .368 on the season. Turner is unlikely to join the Nationals anytime soon, though, even with SS Danny Espinosa (.176 average) struggling. The issue is Turner's major league service time. Arbitration and Super 2 deadlines are pushed back an extra month and a half for Turner because he spent 35 days in the bigs last year.

Fantasy Tip: If the Nationals want to control Turner's rights for as long as possible, they may not call him up until early July. The small yet powerful Turner should hit for average and power as an everyday shortstop in the big leagues eventually, and his biggest asset is his speed. Stash him away now in deep mixed, dynasty and NL-only leagues if he's still available.

Nationals | Three Nats regulars struggling

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 15:37:50 -0700

Washington Nationals OFs Michael Taylor and Jayson Werth and SS Danny Espinosa are all hitting under .172 to start the year and have on-base percentages under .290. However, manager Dusty Baker has seen encouraging signs from them and is committed to keeping all three in the regular lineup. Taylor is 6-for-41 with one walk to open the season. Espinosa has just two hits in his last 24 at-bats but sports a .219 average on balls in play, and his line-drive rate and walk rate are up.

Fantasy Tip: Taylor has the most fantasy upside of the group for his power-speed combination, and owners in all formats should have picked him up in the short term with Ben Revere on the DL.

Nationals | Washington sitting four starters

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 10:13:32 -0700

Washington Nationals OF Michael Taylor, 1B Ryan Zimmerman, C Wilson Ramos and SS Danny Espinosa are not in the starting lineup against Philadelphia Phillies SP Charlie Morton Sunday, April 17. OF Chris Heisey will start in center field and is batting first. 1B Clint Robinson will start at first base and is batting sixth. SS Stephen Drew will start at shortstop and is batting seventh, while C Jose Lobaton will start at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: All four players in the starting lineup have not received a lot of playing time this season, but Heisey, Drew and Lobaton have posted decent batting averages so far. Owners probably should be able to find better options for their starting lineups and can avoid the players.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa still struggling

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 12:51:09 -0700

Washington Nationals SS Danny Espinosa is 0-for-17 with eight strikeouts this spring, and manager Dusty Baker told media the team is trying to help him figure it out.

Fantasy Tip: Espinosa is still the go-to guy, but you have to wonder how much more patience the Nationals have before Trea Turner takes the reins in the nation's capital.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa still the guy

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 13:10:17 -0800

Washington Nationals SS Danny Espinosa is 0-for-7 with four strikeouts in spring training so far, but manager Dusty Baker is not concerned. Espinosa is slated to be the team's starting shortstop entering the year after hitting .240 with 13 home runs and 37 RBI in 118 games in a backup role in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Espinosa has looked bad, but it's early in spring. With the Nats wanting to play it slow with prospect Trea Turner, Espinosa has appeal as a deep mixed middle infielder with notable speed and power in the late rounds. With plenty of playing time, Espinosa is capable of 20 homers and double-digit stolen bases.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa avoids arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 14:40:36 -0800

Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa re-signed a one-year, $2.875 million contract to avoid arbitration Friday, Jan. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Espinosa hit .240 with 13 home runs and 37 RBI through 118 games last year. He has decent pop for a middle infielder and his versatility should make him a useful player to have off the bench in deep mixed leagues. He isn't going to help the batting average column, though, and he isn't as much of a stolen base threat as he was, either. Epinosa checks out as an endgame flier for drafts this spring.

Nationals | Danny Espinosa likely to be regular SS

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 17:03:43 -0800

Washington Nationals INF Danny Espinosa is considered the favorite to replace free-agent SS Ian Desmond as the team's starting shortstop, according to multiple sources. However, general manager Mike Rizzo said INFs Stephen Drew and Trea Turner will also have an opportunity to win the job during spring training.

Fantasy Tip: In 118 regular-season games last season, Espinosa hit .240 with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs. He has decent pop for a middle infielder and his versatility should make him a useful player to have off the bench in NL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues, although he won't hit for a high average and isn't as much of a threat on the basepaths as he was several years ago. Turner is considered to be the Nats' shortstop of the future and will probably begin the 2016 season in the minors. His progress should be monitored in NL-only, deep mixed and dynasty leagues.
