Braves | Chris Johnson suffered bone bruise

Fri, 01 May 2015 13:46:40 -0700

Correcting a previous report, Atlanta Braves 3B Chris Johnson (hand) suffered a bone bruise on his left hand, as the fracture in his left hand was an existing injury. Johnson will be re-evaluated in two weeks, and he is expected to miss three to six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Alberto Callaspo ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) projects to receive the majority of starts in Johnson's ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) absence, and Callaspo's fantasy value gains a fleeting boost with regular at-bats. Still, Callaspo is only worth owning, and Johnson is only worth stashing, in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Braves | Chris Johnson to the DL

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 21:33:20 -0700

Atlanta Braves 3B Chris Johnson (hand) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left hand Thursday, April 30.

Fantasy Tip: With Johnson sidelined, Jace Peterson ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) will likely see more playing time, but he doesn't offer much value at FantasyScore.

Braves | Chris Johnson starting vs. Nats

Wed, 29 Apr 2015 13:33:04 -0700

Atlanta Braves 3B Chris Johnson is starting at third base and batting fifth against the Washington Nationals Wednesday, April 29. It is his first start at the hot corner since Friday, April 24.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is a low-upside FantasyScore play, and his seasonal value has taken a hit with Alberto Callaspo ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) and Kelly Johnson ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) cutting into his starts at the hot corner. Callaspo isn't in the starting lineup Wednesday. Johnson is playing left field and batting sixth.

Braves | Chris Johnson sitting out

Sun, 26 Apr 2015 08:39:28 -0700

Atlanta Braves 3B Chris Johnson is not in the starting lineup Sunday, April 26.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is likely receiving some time off and should return to the lineup in the near future. Kelly Johnson ($1,800, 3.9% of cap) will start at third base but is not a great option on FantasyScore.

Braves | Alberto Callaspo starting at 3B

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 13:25:40 -0700

Atlanta Braves 2B Alberto Callaspo is starting at third base and hitting second in the batting order against New York Mets SP Dillon Gee Wednesday, April 22. 3B Chris Johnson is sitting out.

Fantasy Tip: Callaspo ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) has only 10 hits in 36 at-bats (.278) with just two RBI for the Braves so far in 2015. The switch hitter only hit .238 (61-for-256) with three of his four home runs in 2014 off of righties, too, making him a low-end second base option at FantasyScore.

Braves | Chris Johnson shocked to be out of lineup

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 15:07:13 -0700

Atlanta Braves 3B Chris Johnson was surprised and not pleased to see 2B Alberto Callaspo's name at third base instead of his own on opening day Monday, April 6. "If the manager thinks that there's somebody better than me to play today, that's his opinion and that's what the lineup will show."

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) is a low-end third base option in all fantasy formats, and likely should be left to cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues. While his upside is limited, he should still receive semi-everyday at-bats going forward. Until he shows some offense at the plate, take a wait-and-see approach with Johnson in FantasyScore contests.

Braves | Chris Johnson potentially platooning?

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 16:28:59 -0700

Atlanta Braves 3B Chris Johnson is unlikely to be used in a strict platoon but could be used in a soft platoon, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. Johnson batted .395 in 114 at-bats against left-handed pitchers and .231 in 468 at-bats against right-handed pitchers last season. In 2013, he hit .381 in 134 at-bats against lefties and .300 in 384 at-bats against right-handed pitchers. Johnson has gained comfort with his adjusted batting stance, which focused on lowering his hands. He's totaled five hits, including a two-run homer against Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed SP Vance Worley Thursday, March 26, in his past six spring training at-bats.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) needs to avoid being platooned if he hopes to retain his already modest value. He's unlikely to provide value in standard mixed leagues and is a middle-tier option in NL-only and large mixed leagues.

Braves | Chris Johnson dealing with wrist injury

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 15:18:27 -0700

Atlanta Braves 3B Chris Johnson (wrist) has been sidelined the past three days with a sore left wrist. Johnson is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday, March 10.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson has been putting in extra time with hitting coach Kevin Seitzer, and Johnson has altered his hitting stance. Johnson disappointed with a .263 average, 10 home runs and 58 RBI in 2014, and unless he shows significant improvements this spring, he is nothing more than a late-round flier in mixed leagues. Even in NL-only leagues, he is a mid-tier option, at best.

Braves | Freddie Freeman unlikely for full season

Thu, 05 Mar 2015 11:42:57 -0800

Atlanta Braves 1B Freddie Freeman is unlikely to play a full 162-game season again in 2015. However, he won't be out of the lineup enough for the team to worry about carrying a backup who doesn't play multiple positions. Manager Fredi Gonzalez doesn't plan to carry a third catcher on the roster, meaning 3B Chris Johnson will be the primary backup at first base as he was the last two years. Gonzalez would like to give Freeman a day off occasionally when the team faces a tough left-hander. Freeman played in every game last year and all but six innings the entire season.

Fantasy Tip: Many are high on Freeman in 2015 as a solid fantasy first baseman in the early rounds once the elite names come off the board. Freeman's fantasy floor is rather safe, but his home run output may never take the next step if he continues to hit as many liners as he does. Also, you have to take into account that the lineup around him won't help him out much at all.

Braves | Chris Johnson lowers hands

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 11:15:54 -0800

Atlanta Braves 3B Chris Johnson lowered his hands this year at the suggestion of new hitting coach Kevin Seitzer.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson doesn't crack our list of top-20 fantasy third baseman in 2015. After a career year in 2013, Johnson disappointed with a .263 average, 10 home runs and 58 RBI in 2014. An off-the-charts average on balls in play in 2013 led many to overvalue him last year, and they paid the price. Low contact rates won't endear Johnson to anyone again this year, and he could lose playing time at the hot corner if he struggles, making him solely an NL-only option.
