Vic Ketchman, of Jaguars.com, reports former Jacksonville Jaguars PK Mike Hollis is looking to make a comeback now with the start of the season on the horizon. "I've been kicking, maybe, once a week," Hollis said. 'I got a call from the Titans (Thursday), to see where I was. I'll remain in shape. I'll stay ready." Hollis, who had his career cut short by three back surgeries, was released by the New York Giants last March.

Updating a previous report, New York Giants head coach Jim Fassel still has not decided who will win the place kicking duties for the team in 2003. The two candidates are PK Mike Hollis and PK Matt Bryant. "It's going to be a good competition," Fassel said. "You wish you could put them under the fire more, and that's why I've done the field goals after practice (which determine whether or not the team is going to run sprints), so you get asense who would be best under pressure."

Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reports New York Giants PK Matt Bryant and PK Mike Hollis are competing for the placekicking job in training camp. Bryant hit 4-of-6 field goals missing from 38 and 43 yards out while Hollis made 6-of-7 field goal attempts with a miss from 38 yards out. Head coach Jim Fassel knows it will be a tough decision to make by the end of camp. "I have a feeling when it comes down to it, it will be kind of a flip of a coin, anyway," Fassel said.

Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reports New York Giants PKs Mike Hollis and Matt Bryant have started their training camp battle. Bryant hit four-of-six field goals during workouts on Saturday, July 26, while Hollis hit six-of-seven. The two kickers will get an equal amount of chances in practice and head coach Jim Fassel plans to let the situation play out over the course of training camp. "I have a feeling when it comes down to it," he said, "it will be kind of a flip of a coin, anyway."

Updating previous reports, the New York Post reports New York Giants head coach Jim Fassel said he wants to keep only one place kicker on roster when the season begins, which means there should be a heated battle in training camp. Fassel said he will not keep a kicker on roster to handle just kickoffs. The competition should be among PKs Mike Hollis, Matt Bryant, and possibly even Owen Pochman.

Mark Gaughan reports for the Buffalo News when the Buffalo Bills released QB Rob Johnson earlier this off-season they saved $5.07 million in salary cap space for 2002. They turned around and signed seven free agents with a cap value of $5.04 million for 2002, LB London Fletcher, OT Trey Teague, TE Dave Moore, S Billy Jenkins, PK Mike Hollis, OT Marcus Price and TE Brady McDonnell.

Updating an earlier story, John Clayton reports for ESPN free agent PK Mike Hollis' deal with the Buffalo Bills is a one-year, $650,000 contract. Hollis was hoping to get a longer contract for more money, but the Bills put him in a take-it-or-leave-it situation Tuesday. Reportedly if Hollis had walked away, the Bills would have made an offer to free agent PK Doug Brien (Bucs).

The Tribune-Review reports the Pittsburgh Steelers are only $300,000 under the salary cap and they will have to make a roster move to be able to match the offer sheet signed by PK Kris Brown with the Texans. The most talked about move has been releasing OL Rich Tylski. As a precautionary measure in case they lose Brown, the Steelers spoke to the agent for free agent PK Mike Hollis (Jaguars). "They were just being prepared," agent James Gaetano said. As noted earlier, Hollis has also visited with Buffalo.

He said he's not worried about the weather conditions in Buffalo. Buffalo was his only visit so far, but he said the Steelers have expressed some interest in him.

Vito Stellino reports for the Times-Union the Jacksonville Jaguars spent some of Wednesday checking out University of Florida PK Jeff Chandler at his Pro Day. Chandler kicked field goals with the Jaguars new special teams coach, John Bonamego, doing the holding. The Jaguars are attempting to replace free agent PK Mike Hollis, so they gave Chandler a long look. "John's here to work the kicker out," coach Tom Coughlin said. "We're definitely interested in [Chandler]. We're interested in all the athletes." Chandler said he was pleased with his effort yesterday.

According to the Tribune Review, the Pittsburgh Steelers are counting on restricted free agent PK Kris Brown's return to the team, despite his taking one or more free agent visits. In fact, they have not begun to look for a potential replacement. Agent Jack Mills, who represents New Orleans Saints PK John Carney, said he called the Steelers to gauge their interest in his client, but he was rebuffed. The Steelers have not spoken to the agents for free agent PKs Mike Hollis (Jaguars) and Doug Brien (Buccaneers).

The Times Union reports Jacksonville Jaguars PK Mike Hollis is appealing a $5,000 fine given him by coach Tom Coughlin for comments critical of the coach. Coughlin deemed Hollis' comments "conduct detrimental to the team" in a letter to Hollis and handed down the fine, which agent Jim Gaetano already has appealed to the NFL Players Association.

PK Jaret Holmes kicked the PAT after the team's second TD of the day. Coach Tom Coughlin didn't address the situation after the game. Hollis said he was glad for Holmes and he did not take it as an insult.

The Times-Union reports Jacksonville Jaguars PK Mike Hollis apologized to coach Tom Coughlin for remarks he made about the coach Monday. "I said things I regret now. First I want to apologize to Tom for calling him out. I didn't mean to," Hollis said. "My intent was to explain how things have been here for seven years. You asked me my opinion about Tom. I was at fault for getting in detail like I said. That's my responsibility." Hollis may be playing his last game as a member of the team this week. He is a free agent at the end of the season. Coughlin called Hollis into his office yesterday, but said, "That's between Mike and me."

The Florida Times-Union reports Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Tom Coughlin said PK Jaret Holmes needs to improve after struggling in his debut with the team. Coughlin said, "Jaret Holmes' one problem was the out-of-bounds ball, which, call it close, call it what you want, it was out of bounds, and that brings it back to the 40." Holmes has a shot at the starting job next season because Mike Hollis is expected to leave as a free agent.

He began the season with the third-best field goal accuracy in NFL history, but Hollis is just 2 for 5 this year. Hollis wasn't available for comment after the game. Perhaps factoring into his problems: The Jaguars have a new snapper (Joe Zelenka) and new holder (Chris Hanson) this season.

The Associated Press reports the New York Giants defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-5 earlier tonight. Three Giants QBs, Kerry Collins, Jason Garrett and Jesse Palmer threw TD passes. PK Jaret Holmes kicked two field goals. The defense did not allow a TD for the second straight game. Collins threw a 6-yard TD pass to FB Greg Comella, Garrett tossed a 4-yard TD pass to WR Joe Jurevicius and Palmer threw a 44-yard TD pass to rookie WR Jonathan Carter. Holmes' FGs were from 45 and 30 yards. PK Mike Hollis had a 41-yard FG for the Jaguars. RB Ron Dayne rushed for 43 yards on 12 carries and Jurevicius, filling in for the injured Ike Hilliard, had seven catches for 68 yards.

The Associated Press reports Jacksonville Jaguars PK Mike Hollis' six field goals led the team to a 18-16 win over the Carolina Panthers. The game winner was a 18-yarder with 18 seconds left in the game. Panthers PK John Kasay was short on a 60-yard FG attempt as the final gun sounded. Panthers rookie QB Chris Weinke had an up and down night. He completed 10 of 16 passes for 108 yards, including a 4-yard TD strike to Darryl Daniel. He also fumbled a snap and threw an interception.
