Washington Nationals SP Stephen Strasburg, who said he wants his new slider to help disguise his fastball this year, threw the pitch three times in his outing Tuesday, March 4, and it clocked in at 86 mph twice and once at 88 mph. "I wanted it to look as much like a fastball as possible, so if I get a little bit of movement, that's all I'm really looking for," Strasburg said of the slider. "I'm not going to dump my other offspeed pitches for it. It's just going to be something to keep them from cheating to the fastball as much."
Fantasy Tip: The new pitch could help Strasburg be more efficient this year and complement his K numbers, but the pitch, which puts much more stress on the elbow, can't be good for his long-term health prospects.

"Anytime you can add another pitch that people have to worry about, it makes it harder to face that person."

The Washington Nationals will not rush SP Stephen Strasburg into his first spring start this year, even though he says he's ready to go. He will not pitch in either of the team's first two spring games. "It's just kind of the way it stacks up," manager Matt Williams said. "There's no meaning behind it one way or the other. It's how he feels and how we stack that rotation." Strasburg will throw a bullpen Saturday, March 1, and he'll likely make his spring debut next week.

"It's just a work in progress," Strasburg said. "It's something that I've been messing with. I'm just trying to get a feel for it. I'm not going to dump any of my other pitches. But I'll just have something in the back pocket." Pitching coach Steve McCatty said it's not a pitch Strasburg will likely use very much, but he can run it in on left-handed hitters.
