Cleveland Indians C Carlos Santana will play some third base in the Dominican Republic Winter League this offseason, but manage Terry Francona described it as more of an experiment than anything. "He's going to go over there and play a little third, just to see. He came up as a third baseman, but I think he's about eight years removed. It can't hurt anything. He wanted to get some at-bats anyway. If he wants to go over there and do that, all that can really happen is positive," Francona said.
Santana was used more as a designated hitter and first baseman with C Yan Gomes emerging as a better defensive catcher last season. Santana expressed late last year that serving as the DH wasn't ideal for him. "We don't want him to be a full-time DH," Francona said. "It's actually kind of a unique situation. His ability to move around impacts everybody else. His bat, we want it right in the middle of our batting order. And his ability to play first and catch, that's kind of a unique skillset. The more positions he can play, it just allows us to get more bats into the lineup. He's open to it, so we're willing to be open also."

The Cleveland Indians believe C Carlos Santana has improved his defensive skills considerably behind the plate. "He's had a hot start offensively," said bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. "I think he's still working behind the plate. I mean, he's still further ahead offensively than defensively, but he's doing the job, and he's taking more pride in his defense." Santana threw out only 25.4 percent of attempted base stealers last year, which ranked in the middle of the pack in the American League, and he led the AL in passed balls with 10. However, Santana has done a better job communicating with the club's pitchers so far this year.
Fantasy Tip: Fortunately for Santana's fantasy owners, his defense won't play a part in your decisions. However, the more he improves behind the dish, the more reason the Tribe will have to continue running him out behind the plate instead of at first base or designated hitter.

Cleveland Indians C Carlos Santana (thumb) did not start Sunday, April 14, against the Chicago White Sox, but he did make a pinch-hitting appearance. He drew a walk in the ninth inning.
Fantasy Tip: It appears Santana is nearing a return to the starting lineup. He'll have the team's off day Monday, April 15, to rest further. While it's a bit risky to plug a guy back into the lineup when he hasn't played a full game, Santana is worth the risk.
