Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said Wednesday, Feb. 19, that there are "three or four guys" he is considering for the leadoff spot. OF Dustin Ackley, OF Abraham Almonte, OF Endy Chavez and OF Michael Saunders all led off at various times last season, and each will be competing for outfield jobs this spring.

Seattle Mariners acting manager Robby Thompson said Tuesday, Aug. 13, that 2B Dustin Ackley will continue to receive an extended look in the outfield in the coming weeks. "We have to see what we have out there with Ackley in center field," Thompson said. "We kind of know what we have with (OF Michael Saunders) in center and the corners. There's a chance we'll have (OF Franklin Gutierrez) coming back - and where he's going to fit in. So we're just trying to get Ack in there."

The Seattle Mariners will rotate OFs Michael Saunders, Dustin Ackley, Raul Ibanez and Mike Morse in the final two months of the season, and Ackley may be sent back to the minors if he isn't playing enough.
Fantasy Tip: Ackley will probably see the least playing time out of this rotation, so it'll be hard to find a spot for him on your deep mixed roster, unless an injury opens up playing time.

Seattle Mariners SS Brad Miller is batting leadoff Friday, July 5, although he's hitting only .200 (4-for-20) with a .300 on-base percentage. The Mariners have yet to settle for a single leadoff guy, trying OFs Jason Bay, Endy Chavez, Michael Saunders and Franklin Gutierrez there. Bay and Chavez aren't in the lineup Friday. Miller has experience with hitting leadoff in the minors and feels comfortable at the top spot.

Seattle Mariners OF Michael Saunders (finger) will return to the starting lineup Friday, July 5. Saunders missed his sixth straight game Thursday, July 4.

Seattle Mariners OF Dustin Ackley (thumb) is back starting in center field Tuesday, July 2, after suffering a sprained thumb over the weekend. Ackley injured his thumb while diving for a ball in the outfield, and he said his experience moving to the outfield will help him learn quickly. OF Michael Saunders (finger) is wearing a protective sleeve over his injured finger. He said the swelling must go down before he can return to the lineup.

Seattle Mariners OF Michael Saunders (finger) likely will not be in the starting lineup for a few days because he was spiked in the middle finger Friday, June 28. He is expected to be available to pinch hit.

Seattle Mariners OF/2B Dustin Ackley should get his chances to play after his call-up on Tuesday, June 25. OF Michael Saunders is struggling, OF Jason Bay (hamstring) just recovered from a mild hamstring issue, and OFs Raul Ibanez and Endy Chavez are 41 and 35 years old, respectively. "He's going to play," manager Eric Wedge said. "We're going to get him in there. We'll keep working him in the outfield, but you might see him in the infield if we need him there." The manager also said that Ackley has earned his return to the majors based on his performance with the bat at Triple-A Tacoma since his demotion.
Fantasy Tip: It sounds like the M's are still going to have a hard time fitting him in there, so Ackley may have to make the most of his opportunities. Of course, if something clicked while he was on the farm, he may just do so. Seattle is looking for a reason to commit to him, so Ackley is worth stashing in 15-team mixed leagues and those deeper, just in case.
