Cleveland Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera hit a towering solo home run in an exhibition game in Zebulon, N.C. against the team's new Class A affiliate, the Carolina Mudcats. The homer came off SP Scott Barnes, who drew the start for the Mudcats. Barnes is slated to start for Triple-A Columbus.

Cleveland Indians P Scott Barnes has been turning heads during Cactus League play with his deceptive delivery, turning his back to the hitter before releasing the ball. Indians bullpen coach Dave Miller suffered the turn to Barnes during Arizona Fall League in 2010. Barnes throws a fastball, slider and changeup, with velocity ranges from 90 to 94 mph.

Cleveland Indians P Scott Barnes impressed manager Manny Acta Saturday, March 10, in a Cactus League appearance against the San Diego Padres. He threw two scoreless innings, allowing two hits with one strikeout. Acta liked the deception of Barnes, and his impressive slider.

The Cleveland Indians signed 2B Jason Kipnis, C Lou Marson, OF Shelley Duncan, Ps Vinnie Pestano, Frank Herrmann, Zach McAllister, Nick Hagadone and Scott Barnes, OF Ezequiel Carrera and INFs Lonnie Chisenhall, Russ Canzler and Juan Diaz to one-year deals for the 2012 season Friday, March 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Cleveland Indians SP David Huff will start in the Cactus League opener against the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, March 3, and he will pitch two innings. Huff is competing with SPs Kevin Slowey, Jeanmar Gomez, Zach McAllister and perhaps Scott Barnes for the fifth starter job. "I'm not making my mind up on anybody right now," manager Manny Acta said. "Everybody is looking great throwing bullpens with nobody standing at the plate. Everyone is tied for first place."

Because of Cleveland Indians SP Fausto Carmona's arrest for using a false identity, the team may have an opening for a fifth spot in the rotation this season. SPs David Huff and Jeanmar Gomez are the top candidates for the spot, but SPs Zach McAllister and Scott Barnes could also factor into the mix.
