Texas Rangers RP Neftali Feliz made his fourth relief appearance in 10 days Friday, Nov. 29, in the Dominican Republic Winter League. He's in the final stages of his rehab from Tommy John surgery and will be competing with RPs Tanner Scheppers and Joakim Soria for the closer role next year. Feliz pitched 15 1/3 innings from rookie ball to the big leagues last season. He struck out three of the 10 hitters he faced in his first three winter ball outings and allowed only one hit while topping out at 95-97 mph. "Health-wise, he's probably 95 percent with his delivery and all of that," pitching coach Gary Ruby said. "He's thrown very hard, and the changeup has been way above average. The breaking ball needs some work, but he's really close." Feliz is receiving two days of rest after each appearance.
Fantasy Tip: Feliz has plenty of time to get to 100 percent health. If he doesn't suffer any setbacks between now and spring training, he should be considered the favorite to take the ninth-inning duties over Soria or Scheppers.

Texas Rangers RPs Joakim Soria, Neftali Feliz and Tanner Scheppers are expected to be candidates for the closer job next season. SP Alexi Ogando could also be an option if the team adds another starting pitcher.

Texas Rangers RP Joe Nathan voided his contract option for the 2014 season Friday, Nov. 1, making him a free agent. The Rangers picked up their side of the option.
Fantasy Tip: The Rangers could re-sign Nathan, but that's unlikely since he's looking for a multi-year deal and the club has plenty of other holes to fill. Look for either Joakim Soria or Tanner Scheppers to enter the season as the closer in Texas.

Texas Rangers RP Joe Nathan would prefer to negotiate a multi-year deal. The team has three days to decide whether to exercise his $9 million option for the 2014 season or give him a buyout of $750,000. Nathan can void the option after finishing at least 55 games this season. "I want at least two years," Nathan said. "The last couple of years, I think I've proven that I'm healthy. I think I've proven to lots of skeptics and critics that I can handle a two-year deal or maybe two and an option." Nathan had 43 saves, a 1.39 ERA and 73 strikeouts this year.
Fantasy Tip: Texas has both Joakim Soria and Tanner Scheppers who would be more than capable of filling the closer role if the Rangers decide to let Nathan walk. Soria will be pitching in his first full season back after Tommy John surgery, too.

Updating a previous report, Texas Rangers RP Joe Nathan is expected to decline his $9.5 million option for the 2014 season and become a free agent. However, a formal decision is unlikely to be made until after the World Series is over. If Nathan leaves Texas, RPs Joakim Soria, Neftali Feliz and Tanner Scheppers appear to be the top candidates for the closer's role.

Texas Rangers RP Tanner Scheppers (face) sustained facial cuts and bruises Thursday, July 25, after being assaulted while walking on a street in Cleveland. He said that he is available to pitch, although he has not appeared in any games since the incident.

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara, Detroit Tigers RP Joaquin Benoit, New York Yankees RP David Robertson, Texas Rangers RP Tanner Scheppers and Toronto Blue Jays RP Steve Delabar are vying for the final spot on the American League All-Star roster. Fans have until Thursday, July 11 to cast their votes at MLB.com.

Texas Rangers RP Joakim Soria (pectoral, elbow) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, June 5, and will throw another 35 pitches Friday, June 7, and he could then move to throwing live batting practice next week.
Fantasy Tip: Soria will be a nice addition to the Rangers bullpen for the second half of the season, but how effective he'll be is a different story. He isn't likely to challenge Joe Nathan for the closer's role, and if Nathan were to get hurt, Tanner Scheppers has proved worthy of being in consideration to step in. Soria is unlikely to have any fantasy value this year.

Texas Rangers RP Tanner Scheppers is 3-0 with a 0.45 ERA in 17 outings over 20 innings this year, and he's struck out 12 and walked just four. Scheppers is throwing his fastball in the mid-90s and has touched 98 mph on the gun, but manager Ron Washington said the team will keep him in a setup role. "That's what we're trying to use him as. Future down the road, he has stuff to be a closer. But right now we want his mentality being coming in and giving the ball to Joe (Nathan). And whatever else happens after that down the road, let it happen. But I want his mindset to be he's coming in and getting the ball to the closer," manager Ron Washington said. Scheppers started in college at Fresno State, and he'd like the opportunity to return to a starting role in the long term.
Fantasy Tip: Scheppers, and the rest of the Rangers bullpen for that matter, has been lights out this year. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? That's Washington's approach right now, at least. If Nathan falters or is injured this year, Scheppers could get first crack at ninth-inning duties. The way he's pitching, he deserves to be owned in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Texas Rangers RPs Tanner Scheppers and Joe Ortiz have made the opening day roster. OF Julio Borbon or RPs Josh Lindblom or Cory Burns are the final candidates for the final roster spot.
