Fri, 07 Jun 2013 16:21:02 -0700 Baltimore Orioles 2B Brian Roberts (hamstring) said it's realistic to expect him to return before the All-Star break. He's been performing baseball activities and building up strength in his hamstring after surgery. Roberts has been running, playing catch and recently went from hitting off a tee to taking batting practice. Fantasy Tip: Roberts hasn't played a full season since 2009. He's an injury risk, and that's an extreme understatement. It wouldn't be a surprise for him to miss his timetable of returning before the All-Star break, and the O's have no incentive to rush him. Ryan Flaherty and Alexi Casilla have been splitting time at the keystone. They'll lose their value when B-Rob returns, but that likely won't come anytime soon.
Wed, 29 May 2013 12:09:20 -0700 The Baltimore Orioles recalled 2B Ryan Flaherty from Triple-A Norfolk Wednesday, May 29, and optioned INF Yamaico Navarro to Norfolk in a corresponding move. Fantasy Tip: Flaherty will likely mix in at second base with Alexi Casilla, but he probably won't see enough playing time to warrant attention outside of AL-only universes.
Sun, 19 May 2013 12:18:51 -0700 Updating a previous report, Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter said INF Ryan Flaherty was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to get more at-bats. He said the demotion had nothing to do with his defense, although Flaherty is expected to play several positions in the minors.
Sat, 18 May 2013 19:08:32 -0700 The Baltimore Orioles optioned INF Ryan Flaherty to Triple-A Norfolk Saturday, May 18, and they are expected to recall 3B Danny Valencia from Norfolk in the corresponding move.
Fri, 10 May 2013 15:18:22 -0700 Baltimore Orioles 2B Alexi Casilla has been working on and considering abandoning swinging from the left side of the plate. Casilla will move over to the right side of the plate Friday, May 10, with the team facing a right-handed pitcher. He's a natural righty with the stick, and he's 1-for-9 against righties this year and 6-for-26 against lefties. "In the past years, they say I hit too many fly balls from my left side, fly outs. They see I stay on top of the ball better from my right side, so they came up with the idea, 'What if you hit only from your right side?' I said, 'I can try.'" 2B Ryan Flaherty was seeing the majority of starts at second base against righties, but he's hitting only .122 in 26 games. Fantasy Tip: Casilla has never lit the world on fire offensively, but maybe this will trigger some improvements in his profile. There could be a period of adjustment, too, so don't expect an overnight rejuvenation. Flaherty will continue to get starts, too, so Casilla is best used as middle infield depth in AL-only universes.
Wed, 08 May 2013 14:54:23 -0700 Baltimore Orioles 2B Brian Roberts (hamstring) will undergo surgery on his right hamstring Thursday, May 9, and he's expected to be out for another six weeks. Fantasy Tip: Roberts has had the absolute worst luck with injuries in the past several seasons, and this year has been no different. He still has plenty of time to make a comeback and play in the second half of this season, but don't bank on it. This only gives Ryan Flaherty and Alexi Casilla more rope at the keystone.
Sat, 27 Apr 2013 11:42:35 -0700 Baltimore Orioles C Taylor Teagarden will start behind the plate against the Oakland Athletics Saturday, April 27, with Matt Wieters serving as the designated hitter. INF Ryan Flaherty will play second base, with OF Nate McLouth leading off.
Fri, 05 Apr 2013 11:44:37 -0700 Baltimore Orioles 2B Ryan Flaherty and SS Alexi Casilla are expected to fill in at second base while 2B Brian Roberts (knee) is out of the lineup.
Fri, 29 Mar 2013 12:43:22 -0700 Baltimore Orioles INF Ryan Flaherty has made the opening day roster.
Mon, 25 Mar 2013 13:58:18 -0700 Baltimore Orioles 2B Ryan Flaherty could have a better chance to make the 25-man roster after the injury to 3B Wilson Betemit (knee).
