Wed, 15 May 2013 13:26:08 -0700 Baltimore Orioles SP Miguel Gonzalez (thumb) will pitch in a simulated game Friday, May 17. He'll throw 25 pitches in the bullpen and another 25 to 30 in the game. Fantasy Tip: Gonzalez could return from the disabled list to start early next week if he gets through his simulated game without any setbacks. Steven Johnson is an option for a spot start if Gonzalez has to be pushed back any further.
Tue, 14 May 2013 13:00:37 -0700 Baltimore Orioles SP Miguel Gonzalez (thumb) is hoping to pitch in a minor league rehab game later this week, but he has yet to throw a bullpen session. Fantasy Tip: It doesn't sound good for Gonzalez returning to pitch for the Orioles this weekend, meaning it seems likely that both Steven Johnson and Jair Jurrjens will be asked to enter the team's starting rotation in the short term. Both Johnson and Jurrjens could be options for your AL-only pitching staff.
Tue, 14 May 2013 11:27:32 -0700 The Baltimore Orioles placed SP Wei-Yin Chen (oblique) on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, May 14, and recalled RP Alex Burnett from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. Chen's DL stint is retroactive to May 13. Fantasy Tip: It's unclear who the O's will choose to replace Chen in the rotation with between Jair Jurrjens and Steven Johnson. Both pitchers could be in the rotation if Miguel Gonzalez (thumb) needs more time to recover from a thumb blister, too. Stay tuned.
Mon, 13 May 2013 12:40:41 -0700 Baltimore Orioles SP Wei-Yin Chen (oblique) is expected to land on the disabled list with a strained oblique. The team thinks Chen could take longer than two weeks to heal from his injury. Fantasy Tip: Jair Jurrjens and Steven Johnson could both be added to the rotation depending on the health situation with Miguel Gonzalez (thumb). Stay tuned here. If both Jurrjens and Johnson come up, Jurrjens should be your first target if you're scrounging for pitching in deep AL leagues.
Mon, 13 May 2013 12:18:10 -0700 Baltimore Orioles SP Jair Jurrjens could be called up from Triple-A Norfolk to join the rotation with SPs Miguel Gonzalez (thumb) and Wei-Yin Chen (oblique) injured. Jurrjens allowed five runs and seven hits while walking none and striking out six in seven innings for Norfolk Monday, May 13. Manager Buck Showalter is deciding between SPs Freddy Garcia and Jason Hammel for Wednesday, May 15, against the San Diego Padres. Chen could start Saturday, May 18, but SP Steven Johnson could be recalled if Chen needs to go on the disabled list. Jurrjens could opt out of his contract June 15. Fantasy Tip: 2012 was an atrocious season for Jurrjens, and his injuries didn't help him at all. Baltimore may decide to opt for Jurrjens over Johnson if they need an extra starter because of Jurrjen's opt out date approaching. Jurrjens hasn't impressed in the minors, though, so don't expect much from him if he's recalled. He'll strictly be AL-only rotation fodder if you're desperate.
Sun, 12 May 2013 09:24:17 -0700 The Baltimore Orioles have optioned SP Steven Johnson to Triple-A Norfolk. He allowed six runs on seven hits over four innings in a loss to the Minnesota Twins Saturday, May 11, with four walks and three strikeouts. In a corresponding move, RP Mike Belfiore has been called up from Norfolk.
Sat, 11 May 2013 16:43:22 -0700 The Baltimore Orioles have recalled SP Steven Johnson from Triple-A Norfolk. In a corresponding move, the team optioned RP Alex Burnett to Triple-A Norfolk.
Fri, 10 May 2013 10:33:02 -0700 Baltimore Orioles SP Steven Johnson will be recalled to start Saturday, May 11, according to manager Buck Showalter. Fantasy Tip: You may have an inflated expectation for Johnson after the numbers he put up in a small sample size last season. He's not that dominant of a pitcher, as his minor league track record suggests, so temper your expectations this time around. He makes a nice addition in AL-only leagues, though.
Thu, 09 May 2013 12:07:59 -0700 The Baltimore Orioles placed SP Miguel Gonzalez (thumb) on the 15-day disabled list with blister on his thumb Thursday, May 9, and recalled RP Alex Burnett from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. Fantasy Tip: The team was hoping that Gonzalez could be pushed back to this weekend, but that won't be the case. Steven Johnson is now healthy and was due to make his start with Norfolk Saturday, so he's the logical candidate to replace Gonzalez in the rotation. Johnson isn't likely as good as his numbers last year suggest in a small sample size. If he gets the rotation spot, he's worth watching for a few starts before using a roster spot on him in a mixed league.
Tue, 30 Apr 2013 17:03:00 -0700 The Baltimore Orioles activated SP Steven Johnson (lat) from the disabled list Tuesday, April 30, and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk.
