Red Sox | Craig Kimbrel closing in on return

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 13:42:11 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, July 27, and is lined up to make a rehab appearance Saturday, July 30. He could be activated from the disabled list after the rehab outing.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel hasn't been quite as dominant as in past seasons (3.55 ERA and just 17 saves), but he's still a must-own reliever with the upside to provide a top-tier return down the stretch. Continue to stash him in all fantasy settings and be ready to plug him back into your starting lineups once activated.

Red Sox | Craig Kimbrel progressing well

Thu, 21 Jul 2016 13:23:10 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) stretched with the pitchers to prepare to play catch Thursday, July 21.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel also played catch Wednesday, July 20, so he's clearly progressing well and could return at the short end of his three- to six-week timeline. For now, Brad Ziegler will handle the ninth inning for Boston, and he should be owned in all fantasy formats. Similarly, Kimbrel should be stashed everywhere.

Red Sox | Craig Kimbrel plays catch

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 13:37:26 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) played catch on flat ground Wednesday, July 20, after he had a positive checkup during a doctors appointment Tuesday, July 19.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel's initial return timeline was three to six weeks, so he should return someone in mid-August. He should be stashed in all seasonal leagues. Koji Uehara (pectoral) was placed on the disabled list Wednesday, too, so Brad Ziegler should take care of the ninth inning for Boston and should be owned in started in all fantasy formats.

Red Sox | Craig Kimbrel undergoes surgery

Mon, 11 Jul 2016 16:18:01 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) underwent knee surgery Monday, July 11, and will miss three to six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Koji Uehara is expected to receive most of the save opportunities while Kimbrel is out, but Brad Ziegler will be used when Uehara is not available. Owners should consider adding either pitcher if they are available because they will have value even when Kimbrel returns to the bullpen.

Blue Jays | Aaron Sanchez gets ASG nod

Sun, 10 Jul 2016 12:47:39 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SP Aaron Sanchez was named as an All-Star Game injury replacement for Boston Red Sox SP Craig Kimbrel (knee) on Sunday, July 10.

Fantasy Tip: Most fantasy owners already know Kimbrel is expected to miss three to six weeks. Sanchez's inclusion in the Midsummer Classic is a well-deserved one, as he has posted a 3.04 ERA, 1.20 WHIP to go along with 103 strikeouts across 118 1/3 innings.

Red Sox | Koji Uehara the primary closer

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 19:02:52 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Koji Uehara will be the closer while RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) is sidelined, and RP Brad Ziegler will close on days when Uehara is not available, manager John Farrell said Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Both Uehara and Ziegler are still worth adding if you need saves, but Uehara is obviously the preferred option.

Red Sox | Brad Ziegler, Koji Uehara to close

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 11:04:38 -0700

Boston Red Sox RPs Brad Ziegler and Koji Uehara will both receive opportunities to close games while RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) is on the disabled list, according to manager John Farrell. However, Ziegler is not expected to join the club in time for the game against the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday, July 9.

Fantasy Tip: Ziegler went 2-3 with a 2.82 ERA and 18 saves in 36 appearances for Arizona, with 15 walks and 27 strikeouts over 38 1/3 innings, while Uehara is 2-3 with a 4.96 ERA and three saves through 35 games, with nine walks and 46 strikeouts over 32 2/3 innings. Although Ziegler's strikeout totals are low for a closer and Uehara has posted a 7.00 ERA in 10 games over the past four weeks, both relievers should be rostered in AL-only fantasy leagues and by owners in mixed formats who are desperate for saves.

Red Sox | Craig Kimbrel placed on disabled list

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 10:45:41 -0700

The Boston Red Sox have placed RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) on the 15-day disabled list due to a medial meniscus tear in his left knee. He will undergo surgery Monday, July 11, and is expected to be sidelined for three to six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel sustained the injury while running during pregame warmups Friday, July 8. The 28-year-old right-hander is 1-3 with a 3.55 ERA and 17 saves through 34 appearances this year, with 15 walks and 50 strikeouts in 33 innings, and should be stashed in all fantasy formats. According to manager John Farrell, RPs Brad Ziegler and Koji Uehara will both receive save opportunities during Kimbrel's absence, although Ziegler is not expected to be available for the game against the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday, July 9. Both Ziegler and Uehara should be rostered in AL-only and mixed fantasy leagues.

Boston Red Sox RP Craig Kimbrel (knee) injured his knee while running Friday, July 8, and is awaiting the results of an MRI. Manager John Farrell said Kimbrel won't pitch in the All-Star game.

Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen how much time Kimbrel will miss, but Koji Uehara becomes a must-add in all formats if you need saves.

Red Sox | Non-save outings hurting Craig Kimbrel

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 12:19:43 -0700

Boston Red Sox RP Craig Kimbrel has allowed 12 hits and 10 walks with a 6.75 ERA through 13 1/3 innings in non-save situations this season, whereas he owns a 1.45 ERA with 27 strikeouts over 18 2/3 innings in save bids.

Fantasy Tip: Kimbrel sits with 17 saves, a 3.66 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP with 48 strikeouts through 32 innings this season, which are hardly numbers to shake a stick at. However, if Kimbrel begins to see cuts to his workload in non-save situations it does limit his fantasy upside. Working high-leverage situations late in games is a path to wins and they're spots to help stabilize ratios and beef up the strikeout column. It certainly isn't a time to panic, but fantasy owners will want to monitor this situation.
