Tue, 21 May 2013 12:45:04 -0700 Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa worked to improve his swing with hitting coach Rick Eckstein Monday, May 20, and also had a film session. Espinosa was benched again in favor of 2B Steve Lombardozzi. Espinosa has one hit in his last 28 at-bats and a triple slash line of .163/.191/.260. The team insists he's physically fine despite playing through a torn rotator cuff all of last year. His shoulder could still be playing a part, though, as his power numbers are down again. Espinosa also has a .200 batting average on balls in play, but he's hitting liners only 10.3 percent of the time, the lowest mark in the majors. His home run percentage has dropped from 13 percent in his career to 7.7 percent this year. Espinosa is swinging at more pitches and making contact with pitches outside the zone, but most of all, it looks as though he's lost the strength in his swing. The Nationals still think Espinosa gives them the best option at second base, mainly because of his defense. Fantasy Tip: Lombardozzi should be owned in most NL-only leagues as he takes playing time away from Espinosa. It's also worth noting that Anthony Rendon played second base in the minors yesterday. He could be an option to see time at the keystone later this year if Espinosa is still struggling. They aren't giving up on Espinosa, but he isn't worth a roster spot in mixed leagues at the moment.
Sun, 12 May 2013 09:04:22 -0700 Washington Nationals OF Bryce Harper (toenail) is back in the starting lineup against the Chicago Cubs Sunday, May 12. INF/OF Steve Lombardozzi is making his first start in the outfield this season, playing left field and batting second.
Fri, 03 May 2013 15:07:05 -0700 Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa is back in the lineup Friday, May 3, after sitting out for two games at the expense of 2B Steve Lombardozzi. Espinosa has a triple slash line of only .173/.212/.333 this year. Manager Davey Johnson was non-committal on whether Espinosa will remain as the primary second baseman, but he will give him every chance to prove he deserves the spot. Fantasy Tip: Espinosa is best used as a middle infielder in deep mixed leagues, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to bench him until he gets going, if you have that luxury. Lombardozzi isn't a bad gamble in deep leagues, either, just in case he winds up winning more playing time over the struggling Espinosa.
Wed, 01 May 2013 12:25:31 -0700 Washington Nationals OF Jayson Werth (ankle) is out of the lineup again Wednesday, May 1, and 2B Danny Espinosa is sitting in favor of 2B Steve Lombardozzi.
Fri, 26 Apr 2013 14:51:32 -0700 Washington Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) is eligible to come off the disabled list Friday, May 3, and he thinks he's on track to start a short rehab assignment next week even though he has yet to take swings in the batting cages. Fantasy Tip: It's great that Zimmerman thinks he'll return to the lineup next Friday, but how realistic is that for a player that's often injured early in the season and is a slow healer? Probably not very. Anyway, it won't be a surprise if he doesn't make it back when eligible. Anthony Rendon isn't playing well and needs more minor league seasoning, so until Zimm returns, Steve Lombardozzi is gaining value in NL-only formats.
Mon, 15 Apr 2013 12:12:28 -0700 Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa (wrist) is out of the lineup Monday, April 15, with 2B Steve Lombardozzi replacing him.
Mon, 05 Nov 2012 14:44:15 -0800 The Washington Nationals are considering what to do at second base heading into the 2013 season, with both 2B Danny Espinosa and INF Steve Lombardozzi as options. Espinosa was the starter at the keystone all of last season, but he struggled from the left side of the plate (.233 average with 141 strikeouts). There is no talk of making Espinosa only a right-handed hitter.
Thu, 18 Oct 2012 06:21:44 -0700 Washington Nationals 2B Steve Lombardozzi could push 2B Danny Espinosa for the starting job next year.
Mon, 17 Sep 2012 09:18:18 -0700 Washington Nationals 2B Danny Espinosa (shoulder) is expected to miss the team's series against the Los Angeles Dodgers this week because of a sore left shoulder. Espinosa will have an MRI exam Monday, Sept. 17. He has gone 1-for-21 in his last six games while battling through the shoulder injury. Espinosa has missed a team-low two games this year. INF Steve Lombardozzi is expected to take over at second base.
Sat, 15 Sep 2012 10:23:36 -0700 Washington Nationals OF Steve Lombardozzi is starting in left field against the Atlanta Braves Saturday, Sept. 15.
