Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon seems to be a logical candidate for the St. Louis Cardinals' vacant managerial position. Maddon was a Cardinals fan growing up. However, the Cardinals must first ask the Rays for permission to interview him and they must give the permission. Maddon still has a year left on his contract with Tampa Bay. The Cardinals are also believed to be interested in former managers Terry Francona and Jim Riggleman. In-house candidates include third base coach Jose Oquendo and bench coach Joe Pettini. Free-agent 1B Albert Pujols (Cardinals) may be more inclined to re-sign if Oquendo is named manager.
