Both players spent time in right field but neither Sanchez nor Mercer had a ball hit to them. The Pirates were shorthanded on outfielders during the game due to injuries to OFs Starling Marte (back) and Andrew McCutchen (foot).

Pittsburgh Pirates manager feels it takes at least 1,500 career at-bats in the majors before a player "gets it" and can be reliably evaluated. Three projected starters who yet to reach that level of at-bats is OF Jose Tabata (1,380 at-bats), OF Starling Marte (677 at-bats) and SS Jordy Mercer (395 at-bats).

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer took over as the starting shortstop down the stretch last season due to his bat, but the team re-signed SS Clint Barmes because of his defense. The team has Mercer listed as the everyday shortstop for now, with Barnes operating as a mentor and potential safety net incase Mercer fails to smooth rough edges in the field.

Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Neil Walker (oblique) will likely return from the disabled list and play Tuesday, July 23. He's scheduled to be examined by doctors Monday, July 22, after a three-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis. "I feel good," Walker said. "I had no problems, no setbacks. I took a lot of normal swings. The more I swung, the better it felt. That was very encouraging." 3B Brandon Inge could be released or 3B Josh Harrison could be sent down to make room for Walker.
Fantasy Tip: The return of Walker will spell the end of consistent playing time for Jordy Mercer. Get Walker back in your deep mixed lineups.

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jordy Mercer is going to get most of the starts at shortstop for the foreseeable future, according to manager Clint Hurdle. "Mercer is going to get some reps here because of the quality of his (defensive) play and the way he is swinging the bat," Hurdle said. "It's playing the guy that is obviously taking care of both sides of the ball very professionally. … I've spoken to Clint as well so he doesn't wonder when he's coming in. It won't just be for a game; we'll try to bundle (Barmes) for a few games, maybe some good matchups."
Fantasy Tip: Keep an eye on the Pirates lineup, but it appears you can safely start Mercer moving forward, as long as he keeps up the strong play that earned him starting time.

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed SS John McDonald (back) on the 15-day disabled list with lower back pain Wednesday, May 15, and recalled INF Jordy Mercer in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: McDonald was serving as a backup infielder and Mercer will serve that same role for the Buccos. Not a whole lot of fantasy value to be had here, folks.
