Red Sox | Christian Vazquez's arm still strong

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 16:25:19 -0800

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) made throws to the bases on the field Friday, Feb. 12, and he continues to make good progress from Tommy John surgery. Vazquez has an excellent arm from behind the dish, and his injury doesn't appear to have changed that. "He's probably at about 90%," manager John Farrell said. "But it's there. You can see that. He'll only get better."

Vazquez even played some winter ball to stay active. Vazquez feels like he can be ready for Opening Day, and that's his goal. He also worked on improving his conditioning and changed his diet, which led to him dropping 25 pounds.

Fantasy Tip: Boston will take it slow with Vazquez, and they've already said they play to open the year with Blake Swihart and Ryan Hanigan as their catchers. Vazquez is excellent defensively, but can he hit? He lacks power and should only be looked at in the deepest of AL-only leagues.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez brought along slowly

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 11:43:26 -0800

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) is in the final stages of his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and he says he's 100%. However, the Red Sox are being conservative with Vazquez because of the presence of Cs Blake Swihart and Ryan Hanigan. Vazquez has been pain-free, but Boston wants to see how he responds to workouts in spring training.

Swihart is expected to start on opening day after hitting .310 with four home runs, 17 RBI and an .822 OPS in his final 129 at-bats last year. There has been speculation that the Red Sox move Swihart to first base when Vazquez is completely ready, but Boston isn't entertaining those thoughts yet.

Fantasy Tip: The switch-hitting Swihart held up pretty well last year considering he was rushed to the majors. His solid second half gives hope to fantasy owners willing to take a chance on him as a prospect with plenty of upside. You'll have to be patient with the defense-first Vazquez, but the fact remains that Swihart is and will always be the more attractive fantasy asset.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez may not be ready

Tue, 10 Nov 2015 15:28:40 -0800

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) may need to be eased back on the field following Tommy John surgery this year, and he might not be ready to be counted on for the start of next season, according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. Doctors maintain that Vazquez will be ready for spring training, however. As a result, Boston isn't comfortable trading C Blake Swihart. Vazquez is currently playing winter ball in Puerto Rico as a designated hitter. The Red Sox also aren't inclined to move Swihart to another position.

Fantasy Tip: Vazquez isn't worth a gamble in shallow mixed formats because of the uncertainty around his timetable, but he's Boston's catcher of the future and should see the majority of at-bats whenever he's ready to return. That makes him attractive as a stash candidate in keeper formats. Swihart is a switch-hitting backstop with plenty of offensive upside.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez to play in instructional games

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 10:50:57 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) will report to the instructional league Sept. 14 and receive live at-bats as a designated hitter. His elbow has been feeling good.

Fantasy Tip: Vazquez should be ready to go in time for spring training next year, and he could battle Blake Swihart for regular playing time. He'll certainly come at a bargain in fantasy drafts in 2016, and he could be a nice target for those playing in two-catcher or AL-only setups.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez done for the year

Thu, 02 Apr 2015 16:37:40 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) is expected to require a full year to recover from Tommy John surgery he underwent Thursday, April 2.

Fantasy Tip: Vazquez was slated to start for the Red Sox prior to succumbing to injury. His value was limited to AL-only leagues, but he can now safely be dropped. His injury creates a clearer path for a mid-season promotion for prospect Blake Swihart. Swihart is projected to be a better hitter than Vazquez, and he's a stash candidate in AL-only formats.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez to have surgery

Wed, 01 Apr 2015 16:22:45 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery Thursday, April 2, and there is no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: Vazquez will likely miss most, if not all, of the 2015 season. He can be dropped in all single-year formats. Blake Swihart, the club's top prospect, will still start in the minors, but his timetable for a major league call-up could be sped up now. Look to stash Swihart in AL-only leagues. In the meantime, Ryan Hanigan and Sandy Leon are expected to share the catching duties. Neither is attractive to owners outside of cavernous AL-only, two-catcher leagues.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez has sprained elbow

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 08:58:36 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) is on the 60-day disabled list due to a right elbow sprain. He will visit with Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on his right elbow after undergoing an MRI exam last Friday. C Ryan Hanigan will become the starting catcher to start the season, and C Sandy Leon will serve as the backup. The trade for Leon likely means Boston would rather have C Blake Swihart have more seasoning in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: A combination of Hanigan and Leon hold very little fantasy value in all formats, and the Red Sox catching situation should be avoided wherever possible. Swihart, the team's top prospect, is worth stashing in AL-only and keeper leagues, though, should he come up at some point in 2015.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez to 60-day DL

Mon, 30 Mar 2015 07:07:42 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) was placed on the 60-day disabled list Monday, March 30.

Fantasy Tip: The team acquired Sandy Leon from the Washington Nationals, but he and Ryan Hanigan hold little value on FantasyScore. It's best to avoid this situation altogether unless Blake Swihart receives his shot.

Red Sox | BOS has no interest in Dioner Navarro

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 13:38:38 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Dioner Navarro is attracting no interest from the Boston Red Sox despite the injury to Red Sox C Christian Vazquez.

Fantasy Tip: Navarro appears to be stuck in Toronto with little fantasy value, so unless his situation changes he is best left undrafted in any league.

Red Sox | Christian Vazquez's MRI finds abnormality

Sat, 28 Mar 2015 14:48:40 -0700

Boston Red Sox C Christian Vazquez (elbow) had a recent MRI reveal "something" in his right elbow. He'll seek a second opinion.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan Hanigan would project as the starter if Vazquez were to miss a short window of time. Top prospect Blake Swihart could be in the mix if Vazquez were to need Tommy John surgery or miss a significant amount of time.
