Mets | John Ricco to be interim GM

New York Mets assistant general manager John Ricco will head all of the team's baseball operations until the team hires a new general manager for the 2011 season, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. It is believed that hitting coach Howard Johnson, pitching coach Dan Warthen, third base coach Chip Hale and bullpen coach Randy Niemann will remain with the team.

The Associated Press reports the New York Mets announced that first base coach Luis Alicea will not be back next year and bench coach Sandy Alomar Sr. will be offered another job within the organization. Third base coach Razor Shines and catching coach Sandy Alomar Jr. will remain with the staff but will have different roles. Hitting coach Howard Johnson, pitching coach Dan Warthen and bullpen coach Randy Niemann will be back in the same positions in 2010.

The New York Post's Mike Puma reports New York Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen said that SP Oliver Perez returned from the World Baseball Classic last week with extra flab, and Perez could use more energy on the mound. "He came into camp in good shape. I thought he was throwing the ball very well when he left camp. I was a little reticent when he left here (for the WBC), and my worries have come to fruition," Warthen said.

Marty Noble, of MLB.com, reports New York Mets SP John Maine has made some adjustments in his pitching with the help of pitching coach Dan Warthen. Maine has adjusted the grip on his slider to create a later break and tilt, and he has also extended his stride by about eight inches. Warthen believes Maine's velocity will increase and he will have a better command of his pitches as a result. His next start will come Thursday, March 26, against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Santana could make his first spring start in around two weeks.

Marty Noble, of MLB.com, reports New York Mets SP Johan Santana (elbow) has been scratched from his start Friday, Feb. 27, because of pain in his elbow. Manager Jerry Manuel said that Santana is experiencing discomfort in his elbow and that the situation is not abnormal. Santana will instead throw a bullpen session Friday, according to pitching coach Dan Warthen.
