Indians | Cleveland interested in Will Smith

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 18:15:15 -0700

The Cleveland Indians have expressed interest in trading for Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith.

Fantasy Tip: Cleveland has been searching for left-handed bullpen help for a while and Smith would likely be used in a setup role if he lands there. He is 1-3 with a 3.72 ERA in 24 appearances this season, with eight walks and 18 strikeouts over 19 1/3 innings.

Giants | Two Brewers on Giants' radar

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 06:40:05 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Jeremy Jeffress and RP Will Smith have been scouted by the San Francisco Giants.

Fantasy Tip: The Giants have been wavering on Santiago Casilla as their closer as he has blown five saves in 26 chances. Jeffress could come over and have a chance to slot in the ninth. However, odds are that he'll set up if he's dealt. Smith would only gain value if Jeffress is dealt and Smith is not. Both are worth owning universally.

Mets | NYM interested in Milwaukee relievers

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 09:55:14 -0700

The New York Mets have expressed interest in Milwaukee Brewers RPs Jeremy Jeffress and Will Smith, according to an industry source.

Fantasy Tip: Jeffress is 2-2 with a 2.35 ERA and 23 saves in 40 appearances this season, with nine walks and 28 strikeouts, while Smith is 1-2 with a 2.12 ERA in 19 games, with five walks and 15 strikeouts in 17 innings. A potential trade to New York would be more damaging to Jeffress' fantasy value, since he would no longer be closing games due to the presence of Jeurys Familia. Both relievers would be ticketed for setup roles if the Mets acquire them.

Brewers | Will Smith trade winds swirling

Mon, 11 Jul 2016 22:40:43 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith is expected to have circulation of trade winds around him after the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: Smith has a 2.12 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP. His K-rate was down a few days ago, but he picked it up with five K's in 2 2/3 innings to bring him to 15 K's in 17 innings on the year. He's likely to remain in a setup role if dealt, but he could close if Jeremy Jeffress is dealt and he remains. He's a decent ratios reliever in most formats.

Brewers | Will Smith on a roll

Thu, 07 Jul 2016 10:44:20 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith has a 1.84 ERA, a 0.86 WHIP and a .163 opponent's batting average since returning from his knee injury. His strikeout rate is down from 12.9 per nine innings to 6.8 per nine, though. According to FanGraphs, his average fastball has been 91.4 mph, which is down from 93.2 mph last season. Smith feels the velocity will return once he receives more work.

Fantasy Tip: Smith is a good ratio's guy in fantasy, but the cut in strikeouts really hurts. He's a must-have in NL-only leagues, but his mixed league value is minimal unless he enters the closing mix.

Brewers | Will Smith a closing option?

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 09:31:37 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell said he'd be as comfortable using RP Will Smith once he gets his feet on the ground -- in the ninth inning to close out games as he is with RP Jeremy Jeffress.

Fantasy Tip: Does anyone smell closer-by-committee? Jeffress has been solid in the ninth-inning role for Milwaukee, saving 12 of his 13 chances. But Smith was great last year for the Brew Crew with a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a whopping 12.9 strikeouts per nine innings, and he certainly has the stuff to succeed in the role. However, Smith only has one career save. Regardless, he needs to be owned everywhere, as it looks like he'll get a shot to lock down games alongside Jeffress.

Brewers | Will Smith to be activated Wednesday

Tue, 31 May 2016 21:48:11 -0700

Updating a previous report, Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) will now be activated on Wednesday, June 1. In a related move, RP David Goforth (0-0, 9.39 ERA) was optioned to Class AAA Colorado Springs.

Fantasy Tip: Milwaukee's bullpen got touched up Tuesday night, particularly Goforth (four ER in 1/3 IP), so the team decided to accelerate their plan to bring back Smith by a day. Jeremy Jeffress has been good, but keep in mind he only recorded six of the team's 10 saves in May, so Smith could see some chances. If you're prospecting for saves, Smith is a good stash candidate.

Brewers | Will Smith to return Thursday

Tue, 31 May 2016 14:23:37 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers RP Will Smith (knee) will be activated from the disabled list Thursday, June 2, and he said his knee is doing great.

Fantasy Tip: Smith isn't guaranteed his closer job back with Jeremy Jeffress being serviceable in the role this year. But if you're in need of saves or own Jeffress, Smith should be scooped up now before he's activated later this week. There remains a chance that Smith could be used in the ninth inning if Jeffress falters or is in need of a break.
