Detroit Tigers OF Andy Dirks (back) underwent a microdiscectomy Monday, March 10, in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the procedure was seemed successful. He's not allowed to do any physical activity besides walk for three weeks and is expected to be sidelined for a total of 12 weeks.
Fantasy Tip: The positive for hopeful AL-only owners of Dirks is that no complications were discovered or arose, if that had been possible. Rajai Davis is expected to benefit most from Dirks' absence primarily because the speedy outfielder is the only fantasy-relevant player who could.

Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus had the same injury as OF Andy Dirks (back) a few years ago when he was still playing. "My understanding is a piece of the disc tore away from the whole of the disc," Ausmus said. "They're just going to go in and remove that piece and clean up the area on the disc where it had come off." Dirks has apparently dealt with back issues for some time. OF Rajai Davis may now turn into more of an everyday player, according to Ausmus.
Fantasy Tip: Davis should be bumped up draft boards. His legs make him a real stolen-base asset, and with more playing time, the returns could be significant. Dirks will likely play again this year, but the extent of his injury could make him a non-factor.

Updating a previous item, Detroit Tigers OF Andy Dirks (back) will undergo a microdiscectomy on his injured back Monday, March 10, and he'll go six weeks before resuming baseball activities.

Detroit Tigers OF Andy Dirks (back) will undergo surgery on his back and miss 12 weeks.
Fantasy Tip: Dirks was in line for platoon duty with Rajai Davis in left field this year. That could now fall to Don Kelly, at least in the interim. Davis looks more intriguing now since it's unclear if Kelly would be a straight up platoon partner. Depending on the nature of Dirks' surgery, this could put a damper on his entire season.

The Detroit Tigers avoided arbitration with OF Andy Dirks Friday, Jan. 17, by agreeing to a one-year, $1.625 million deal.

The Detroit Tigers placed OF Matt Tuiasosopo (intercostal) on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left intercostal Friday, June 21. The move is retroactive to June 20. In corresponding moves, the team recalled OF Avisail Garcia and RP Al Alburquerque from Triple-A Toledo.
Fantasy Tip: Garcia could split time in left field with the struggling Andy Dirks. Look to add Garcia only in AL leagues. Alburquerque could see valuable late-inning work now that Jose Valverde is no longer on the roster, but it remains to be seen if Leyland will trust Alburquerque for the occasional save opp if Joaquin Benoit is unavailable. That'll likely fall to Phil Coke or Drew Smyly, though.

Detroit Tigers OF Matt Tuiasosopo (intercostal) was scratched from the lineup Thursday, June 20, with a mildly strained intercostal muscle.
Fantasy Tip: If Tuiasosopo's injury is serious, it'll mean more playing time for Andy Dirks, who has cooled of late. Avisail Garcia could also return and steal time away from Dirks.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said OF Matt Tuiasosopo could receive more time in left field against right-handed pitchers if OF Andy Dirks continues to struggle at the plate.

Detroit Tigers OF Andy Dirks has some experience in center field and OF Avisail Garcia can also play center, having started 44 games there last summer with Double-A Eerie. OF Torii Hunter has plenty of experience in the position, too, so the Tigers have plenty of options to play center field with OF Austin Jackson (hamstring) on the disabled list. OF Don Kelly started the last two games in center field over the weekend. Garcia's natural role is as a corner outfielder, though, and he hit .432 (16-for-37) with a double, a home run and four RBIs in eight games with Triple-A Toledo.
Fantasy Tip: Kelly was likely a temporary solution to the problem over the weekend. Now that Jackson is out for two weeks, expect either Dirks or Hunter to man center field regularly, allowing Garcia to play a corner outfield spot. Garcia may not play every day, however, but for those speculating on increased playing time in cavernous mixed leagues, Garcia is your best bet over Kelly or Matt Tuiasosopo.
