Tigers | Alex Avila healthy

Wed, 30 Jan 2013 07:18:29 -0800

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) said he is healthy this offseason after tendonitis in his knee put a damper on his 2012 season. "I'm already able to do stuff this offseason I wasn't able to do last offseason," Avila said. At the beginning of the season I was fine. But by (May) when I had to miss those two or three games in Seattle, I could hardly walk. It was pretty sudden."

Tigers | Alex Avila optimistic about knee

Tue, 29 Jan 2013 13:57:29 -0800

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) is optimistic that his cranky left knee won't affect his performance this year, and he continues to think that he should be a regular catcher. "I am an everyday catcher. I expect to play every single day," said Avila, who ended last season in a platoon situation with C Gerald Laird. "I mean, what's going to dictate that is my play, and that's my job. That's how I look at it. I plan on catching a lot of games this year." Part of the reason he entered into a timeshare down the stretch last year was because of his .176 average and 30 strikeouts in 85 at-bats against left-handed pitching. Avila received platelet-rich plasma injections shortly after the World Series ended, and he said it has had great results.

Tigers | Victor Martinez running

Tue, 15 Jan 2013 09:57:35 -0800

Detroit Tigers C Victor Martinez (knee) has picked up his running program, and he's on a schedule of three weekly baseball-running sessions. "Victor is not running at full speed, but he is running very well," team trainer Kevin Rand said. "We are doing low-volume (work) right now with a warm-up, turns at the bases, simulated running out of the batter's box and going from first to third." Martinez won't be pushed in spring training, but he'll be ready to serve as the designated hitter on opening day. He's been hitting live pitching and he hasn't had any issues swinging the bat. Martinez is expected to be the emergency third catcher this year with Cs Brayan Pena and Alex Avila doing the work behind the dish.

Tigers | Jim Leyland wants to see Alex Avila more aggressive

Wed, 19 Dec 2012 15:36:08 -0800

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said a number of things accounted for C Alex Avila's drop in production, most notably nagging injuries, but the skipper also thinks a less aggressive approach at the plate set him back. "I'm not saying anything I haven't told his dad (assistant GM Al Avila); I'd like to see him more aggressive. I felt like there were too many times this year he was hitting with two strikes on him, and he was only getting one swing. That's just my personal opinion. I'm not a hitting coach, but he's a very selective hitter - I felt a little bit too selective."
