Tigers | Alex Avila starting against Royals

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 13:53:14 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is starting behind the plate and batting ninth against Kansas City Royals SP Yordano Ventura Wednesday, Sept. 2. C James McCann is not in the starting lineup Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($3,300,6.6% of cap) is having a disappointing season with a .178 batting average, and he is nothing more than a desperation option in AL-only, cavernous mixed and two-catcher formats. FantasyScore players can fade him without worry. McCann ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is currently struggling, too, as he has .194/.237/.292 slash line over his past 19 games.

Tigers | Alex Avila starting behind the plate

Mon, 24 Aug 2015 12:25:23 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is starting behind the plate and batting seventh against Cincinnati Reds SP Keyvius Sampson Monday, Aug. 24. C James McCann is not in the starting lineup Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) owns a .160/.299/.222 slash line over 97 plate appearances since he returned from the disabled list Friday, July 3. There is no reason to target him at FantasyScore, but if the salary fits in the endgame of lineup assembly, he has some upside hitting in a strong lineup. McCann ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has proven to be the better catcher for Detroit this season, and he is worth a look in two-catcher, AL-only and cavernous mixed formats.

Tigers | Alex Avila starting vs. Texas

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 14:25:25 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is starting behind the plate and batting seventh against Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis Friday, Aug. 21. C James McCann is not in the starting lineup Friday.

Fantasy Tip: It has been a disastrous season for Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap), as he is even struggling against righties with a .184/.331/.281 slash line. This will be just his seventh start in August, as McCann ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) has been playing more regularly. McCann is having a solid season with a .270 batting average and respectable counting stats given he has only received 308 plate appearances. It is likely best to avoid Avila at FantasyScore Friday.

Tigers | James McCann on the bench

Sun, 16 Aug 2015 10:17:15 -0700

Detroit Tigers C James McCann is not in the starting lineup against Houston Astros SP Mike Fiers Sunday, Aug. 16. C Alex Avila will start at catcher and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: McCann ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) started the last four games, so he is receiving a day off. Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is hitting only .133 this month and is not a great option for owners on FantasyScore.

Tigers | Alex Avila to resume catching

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 17:47:45 -0700

Detroit Tigers C/1B Alex Avila will see most of his playing time behind the plate, as a result of 1B Miguel Cabrera returning from the disabled list. However, manager Brad Ausmus said C James McCann will continue to serve as the team's primary backstop.

Fantasy Tip: Entering play Friday, Aug. 14, McCann ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) was batting .281 with five home runs and 26 RBIs through 79 contests. Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is only batting .178 through 49 games this season and is not a great option in FantasyScore.

Tigers | Alex Avila playing first base

Sat, 01 Aug 2015 12:31:21 -0700

Detroit Tigers C/1B Alex Avila will start at first base and bat eighth against Baltimore Orioles SP Kevin Gausman Saturday, Aug. 1. C James McCann will start behind the plate and bat sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) is just 1-for-14 over the past week and is hitting .143 on the road in 70 at-bats this season. Avoid him at all costs in FantasyScore. On the other hand, McCann ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is hitting .261 over the past week and is hitting .288 away from Comerica Park, making him worthy of consideration for your lineup tonight.

Tigers | Alex Avila out Thursday

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 13:09:10 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup Thursday, July 30. C James McCann is behind the plate and is hitting seventh against Baltimore Orioles SP Miguel Gonzalez.

Fantasy Tip: McCann ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is rather expensive for a backup catcher, but he is batting .280 (63-for-225) with four home runs and 24 RBI on the season. He remains more of a low-end catching commodity for daily gamers, though.

Tigers | Detroit making impending FAs available

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 13:25:41 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila, SP Alfredo Simon and OF Rajai Davis could be moved before the trade deadline since they will become free agents after the season.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap), Simon ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) and Davis ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) has been regulars for the Tigers this season but could be moved for the right offer. Their fantasy value will be determined by which team they play for and the role on the team.

Tigers | Alex Avila starting at 1B

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 15:06:32 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is starting at first base and hitting seventh against Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi Tuesday, July 28. That allows C James McCann to start behind the plate. McCann is hitting sixth in the batting order.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) and McCann ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) don't really move the FantasyScore needle very much. Avila is hitting only .188 (21-for-112) with three home runs on the year. McCann has swung the bat a bit better (.289-4-24) and is probably the more intriguing value play at catcher at a slightly more expensive price.

Tigers | Alex Avila playing first base

Sat, 25 Jul 2015 11:23:01 -0700

Detroit Tigers C/1B Alex Avila will start at first base and bat seventh against Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright Saturday, July 25, with C James McCann starting behind the plate and batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: This will be Avila's ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) seventh appearance and fifth start at first base this season. He is only batting .196 in 46 at-bats this month and is only hitting .161 away from Comerica Park, so he should be avoided in FantasyScore. McCann ($3,900, 7.8% of cap) is batting .417 with a home run and seven RBIs through 36 at-bats this month and is worth consideration for FantasyScore lineups.
