Tigers | Alex Avila started rehab work

Mon, 18 May 2015 17:18:58 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) started his rehab work Monday, May 18, as he tries to strengthen his left knee. Avila doesn't have a timetable for his return, but he hopes to know more later this week.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) warrants occasional FantasyScore consideration as a regular member of the Tigers powerful lineup. In just 74 plate appearances, Avila had 10 runs scored and eight RBI. James McCann ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) will continue to be the Tigers regular catcher until Avila is able to return.

Tigers | Alex Avila will not have surgery

Wed, 13 May 2015 15:40:56 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) will not have surgery, but there is still no timetable for his return.

Fantasy Tip: Avila's All-Star campaign in 2011, when he hit 19 home runs, drove in 82 and posted a .295/.389/.506 slash line appears to be the a mirage at this point, as over his past 780 at-bats he has hit just .221. He is not worth holding in the majority of formats. James McCann ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) projects to receive the majority of starts while Avila is out, and McCann should be viewed as a low-priced flier for FantasyScore players going forward.

Tigers | No decision on surgery for Alex Avila

Wed, 13 May 2015 12:46:29 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (knee) recently met with another doctor, but there is still no decision as to whether he will undergo surgery on his knee. Avila is currently on the 15-day disabled list and hopes to be 100% by the second half of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) would miss several weeks if he undergoes surgery on the knee. James McCann ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) will continue to see most of the starts while Avila is out and could be a cheaper option for owners on FantasyScore to consider.

Tigers | Alex Avila placed on DL

Sat, 09 May 2015 06:32:38 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (forearm, knee) was placed on the diasabled list Saturday, May 9, with loose body in his left knee, according to the team. Avila was also scratched from the game Friday, May 8, with a forearm contusion, the team said.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) has struggled at the dish this season, and dating back to 2013 he is hitting just .221 over 780 at-bats. The All-Star campaign in 2011, when he hit 19 home runs, drove in 82 and posted a .2985/.389/.506 slash line appears to be a mirage now. Expect James McCann ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) and recently recalled Bryan Holaday to handle the catching duties in Avila's absence. McCann has fared well at the dish this season when given an opportunity going 13-for-44.

Tigers | Alex Avila injury update

Fri, 08 May 2015 16:25:46 -0700

Updating a previous report, Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila (forearm) was scratched from the starting lineup Friday, May 8, because of a right forearm contusion.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,700, 5.4% of cap) could miss a few days because of the injury, so owners should watch for any timetable for him. James McCann ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) likely will start while Avilia is out and could be a cheaper option for owners on FantasyScore to consider.

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, May 6, against a left-handed pitcher. C James McCann is starting and hitting eighth in the batting order against Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale.

Tigers | Alex Avila out again Thursday

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 14:22:07 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup again Thursday, April 30. C James McCann is starting and hitting eighth in the batting order against Kansas City Royals SP Danny Duffy.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) is hitting just .171 (7-for-41) with one home run and four RBI in April, and McCann ($1,800, 3.6% of cap) hit his first home run of his career (an inside-the-parker!) yesterday. Avila could likely use more rest over the course of the season, so it wouldn't be surprising to see McCann continue to take more starts away from Avila, at least against left-handers like today. McCann should be on the radar of owners in two-catcher or deep AL-only leagues.

Tigers | Alex Avila out of the lineup

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 12:56:56 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup Monday, April 20. C James McCann will be the starting catcher for the Tigers.

Fantasy Tip: Avila ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) is not playing since the team is facing a left-handed starter. McCann ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) only has one hit in his last 16 at-bats, so owners probably should look for better options to use.

Tigers | Alex Avila sitting out again

Sun, 19 Apr 2015 07:17:09 -0700

Detroit Tigers C Alex Avila is not in the starting lineup Sunday, April 19. C James McCann will be the starting catcher against the Chicago White Sox.

Fantasy Tip: The Tigers are facing a left-handed pitcher, so Avila ($2,200, 4.4% of cap) receives his second straight day off. McCann ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) should not be a starting option in FantasyScore since he has not recorded a hit in his last 12 at bats.
