Mets | Collin Cowgill was overswinging

Fri, 03 May 2013 14:45:59 -0700

New York Mets OF Collin Cowgill was sent to the minors because he was overswinging after hitting a grand slam on opening day. OF Andrew Brown was brought up to breathe life into the outfield. Collins mentioned how Brown was hitting lefties well at Triple-A Las Vegas. Brown was hitting .286 (8-for-28) against lefties and .400 (28-for-70) against righties.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Collins plans to use Brown mainly against left-handed pitchers, and he could spell Ike Davis at first base on days the team faces a tough lefty. Juan Lagares will mainly be used as a defensive replacement late in games, so at the moment, Brown looks to have more value in NL leagues than Lagares.

Mets | Collin Cowgill demoted

Fri, 03 May 2013 12:11:14 -0700

The New York Mets optioned OF Collin Cowgill to Triple-A Las Vegas Friday, May 3, to make room on the roster for OF Andrew Brown. Cowgill was hitting only .157 (8-for-510 with two home runs and eight RBIs this year, and he was hitless in his last 13 at-bats and made a costly error earlier this week. Brown was hitting .367 (36-for-98) with two home runs and 27 RBIs in 25 games at Las Vegas, and he had an active 11-game hitting streak and led the Pacific Coast League with 13 doubles.

Fantasy Tip: Brown is mainly for outfield depth, but he could split playing time in center field with Juan Lagares. Temper some of the offensive expectations for Brown, since the PCL is probably the most hitter-friendly league in the minors. For now, he's only an option in NL leagues unless he receives consistent playing time.

Mets | Collin Cowgill to see less PT

Tue, 23 Apr 2013 12:54:33 -0700

New York Mets OF Collin Cowgill will see his playing time diminish with OF Juan Lagares on roster.

Fantasy Tip: Lagares is expected to start Wednesday, and he'll most likely be used most often in center field, which is his most comfortable position. Take a look at Lagares only in cavernous NL-only formats.

Mets | Collin Cowgill will be everyday player

Sat, 30 Mar 2013 12:39:22 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said OF Collin Cowgill will be the team's regular centerfielder and will not use a platoon at that position.

Fantasy Tip: Cowgill probably will not be an option in mixed leagues at this point despite being named a starter. He could be an option in some National League-only leagues because he will receive regular playing time.

Mets | Not bringing in other outfielders

Fri, 22 Mar 2013 15:38:26 -0700

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said the team will stick with their current stable of outfielders - OFs Lucas Duda, Collin Cowgill, Marlon Byrd, Mike Baxter and Jordany Valdespin. Byrd figures to have the best chance for an everyday role at the moment.

Fantasy Tip: The most common outfield alignment will probably involve Duda, Cowgill and Byrd. None are ringing endorsements for mixed leagues unless you're in a cavernous format. NL-only leagues are a different story.

Mets | Terry Collins discusses OF picture

Fri, 01 Mar 2013 15:17:21 -0800

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said SS Jordany Valdespin will start playing some outfield in spring training, and he's hitting .429 in the Grapefruit League currently. OFs Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who is hitless in his last 15 at-bats, and Collin Cowgill are the favorites to platoon in center, but OF Matt Den Dekker is entering the picture. However, Den Dekker is unlikely to earn a roster spot, and he's not currently on the 40-man roster.

Mets | Kirk Nieuwenhuis a leadoff candidate

Wed, 20 Feb 2013 13:40:21 -0800

New York Mets OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis will hit leadoff in the team's spring opener Saturday, Feb. 23, and there is a good chance that manager Terry Collins will pick him as the leadoff hitter for the season opener in April. "I think it sends a huge message to him," Collins said. "It's the first game. And when we were playing really, really well (last year), that guy was in center field. He deserves the right to get the first shot." Nieuwenhuis figures to be involved in a platoon with OF Collin Cowgill in center field, and the team isn't sold with SS Ruben Tejada in the leadoff spot. OF Mike Baxter and 2B Daniel Murphy could also wind up hitting leadoff. Hitting leadoff for Collins, though, doesn't mean the player will have the green light to run whenever they want.

Tue, 12 Feb 2013 11:49:14 -0800
