Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Kole Calhoun was in the starting lineup Monday, July 7, against the Toronto Blue Jays despite a left-handed pitcher on the mound. It was his first start against a lefty since May 31. Calhoun is a left-handed hitter who has been in a platoon situation with Collin Cowgill, but Calhoun's recent hot streak pushed him into the starting lineup. Entering Monday, Calhoun was hitting .481 over his past eight games. "I don't know if there's a player hotter in our league than Kole Calhoun right now," manager Mike Scioscia said.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Kole Calhoun will need to get going offensively against lefties in order to be penciled into the lineup every day. He's just 1-for-15 against left-handers since returning from the disabled list, and he said his timing is "getting there." Manager Mike Scioscia will continue to platoon with OFs Grant Green and Collin Cowgill until Calhoun returns to full health.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Collin Cowgill will go back to a bench role now that OF Kole Calhoun (ankle) is back from the disabled list and OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) is set to return next week. Cowgill hit .287 (25-for-87) with a .395 on-base percentage, three doubles, 16 runs and 13 walks in 25 games.
Fantasy Tip: Cowgill will strictly be an AL-only commodity once Hamilton returns next week.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim don't have a true backup in right field to OF Collin Cowgill, but manager Mike Scioscia said OF Raul Ibanez could fill in if Cowgill were injured. 3B Ian Stewart also has a little experience in the outfield.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Kole Calhoun (ankle) is dealing with a serious ligament sprain and will be out four to six weeks, according to manager Mike Scioscia.
Fantasy Tip: It couldn't be a worse time for the Angels, who just lost Josh Hamilton (thumb) for a similar timetable. Collin Cowgill is the main beneficiary in right field, and he should now be owned in all AL leagues. Brennan Boesch could wind up in a platoon with Cowgill, too.

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Josh Hamilton (thumb) will have surgery on his left thumb after suffering a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligament along with a torn capsule. He'll be out six to eight weeks. The Angels have recalled OF J.B. Shuck to replace Hamilton on the roster.
Fantasy Tip: This is a huge blow to Hamilton owners, but this came with the territory when buying the oft-injured outfielder. This is the type of injury that can wipe out an entire season, since thumb and wrist injuries to hitters can erase much of their power. Dropping Hamilton in shallow mixed leagues wouldn't be crazy if you don't have any more room on roster.
Shuck and Collin Cowgill will likely split time in the outfield with Hamilton out. Shuck, who doesn't have much pop but is an asset because of his speed, should be your first choice in AL-only leagues.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SS John McDonald has been added to the active roster for the regular season, meaning two bench spots are left for OFs J.B. Shuck and Collin Cowgill and 3B Ian Stewart and SS Grant Green.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B Carlos Pena will compete for a spot to be the backup first baseman to 1B Albert Pujols. OF Brennan Boesch will compete with OFs J.B. Shuck and Collin Cowgill for a reserve outfield spot. Both Pena and Boesch received invites to spring training.
