The San Diego Padres have reinstated SPs Cory Luebke (elbow) and Joe Wieland (elbow) from the 60-day disabled list. Both are recovering from Tommy John surgery and hope to pitch during the 2014 season. However, they have experienced setbacks during their rehab that have put them on the longer side of the typical 12-18 month recovery window.

San Diego Padres P Joe Wieland (elbow) is still hopeful he can pitch in winter ball, getting a jump-start on the 2014 season. He is making his way back from a pair of reconstructive elbow surgeries. "I want to get some innings, even if it's 10 or 15 innings," Wieland said Wednesday, Sept. 4. "I want to make sure that it's healthy. I don't want to go to spring training in the dark wondering if it's going to happen again."

San Diego Padres SPs Cory Luebke (elbow) and Joe Wieland (elbow) are both unlikely to return to pitch this season. Both pitchers could pitch in the Arizona Fall League or winter ball, however. Luebke just started throwing off a mound. Wieland recently suffered a triceps strain that has slowed his throwing program.

The San Diego Padres are open to trading SP Edinson Volquez at the trade deadline, even though they plan to limit the workloads of SPs Andrew Cashner and Robbie Erlin this year. Ps Tyson Ross and Burch Smith are options to enter the rotation in the second half of the year. SP Joe Wieland (elbow) is expected to return after the All-Star break.
Fantasy Tip: Keep Ross, Smith and Wieland on your radar in NL-only leagues if the Padres trade one of their current starters.

San Diego Padres SP Joe Wieland (elbow) will play catch off a mound Monday, March 25, after undergoing Tommy John surgery last July. He's been throwing from 150 feet and will have two more sessions of that length before next Monday. Wieland is optimistic that he'll pitch in a game this season.
Fantasy Tip: Wieland has the skills to be a mainstay in San Diego's rotation down the line. Keeper leaguers need to tuck his name away for the 2014 season and beyond.

The San Diego Padres have several open starting rotation spots after SPs Clayton Richard, Edinson Volquez and Jason Marquis. Ps Anthony Bass, Casey Kelly, Tyson Ross, Eric Stults, Freddy Garcia and Robbie Erlin are all in the picture. SP Tim Stauffer (elbow) is about two weeks behind the other pitchers. SPs Andrew Cashner (thumb), Joe Wieland (elbow) and Cory Luebke (elbow) aren't options because they are rehabbing from injuries. Cashner is expected to be back on a mound by March 1 and Wieland and Luebke won't return until midseason or later after having Tommy John surgery.
